Hello,
We are still working on getting our newest server in place. We hope to add it next week. At that time we will have three servers hosting ThriftyFun. We have decided to name our servers. If you have any names for each of our three servers, please send them in. They cost thousands of dollars and ThriftyFun wouldn't be able to operate without them, it seems only fair that they get their due and have names.
Also, does anyone have any ideas for what to call ThriftyFun readers? We have seen people refer to themselves as Thrifties, ThriftyFuners and a few other things. If anyone has any ideas for server names and/or names for ThriftyFun users, we would love to hear them.

This is another idea to save money when installing new cabinets. If your cabinets do not end in a corner, you need some kind of "cap" to finish them off. I cut a piece of masonite to fit, and then glued can labels that I saved ahead of time....just whatever I used in the kitchen such as beans, tuna, peaches, etc. Thin down some white glue and spread it on the masonite board to cover. A damp sponge works well for this project.
Then take you sponge and spread glue on the back of each label, positioning each one as you finish. Just lay them across each other in an eye appealing manner. Smooth our any wrinkles with the sponge dampened with a little water. Let dry slightly so they don't slide, and then coat with another layer of white glue. The glue will dry clear. You can follow with anothe layer of glue if you like. I also made another board to fit above the sink where there was a gap in the cupboards to place my light. The board is across the front and the light shines out under it.

Hello- this is 'Shelly Girl'. She was my friend's dog who sadly passed away very recently.
This is what Bea, my friend from Texas- wrote about Shelly: 'She was the very first thing that I had that was mine alone, when I was sick, 3 1/2 years ago, she was right there by my side, literally. Ray, my husband, couldn't get her outside to go potty, he had to pick her up and make her go and she went right back to my door and waited for him to open it. I rescued her from the Humane Society for Animals and you should have seen her.
She was a Cairn Terrier about 6 month's old and she was shaking like a leaf. I saw her and our eyes locked and I just knew I wasn't leaving there without her. The minute they put her in my arm's she stopped shaking and started licked me.
Anyway, there are so many things I could tell you about her, but the most remarkable thing that comes to mind is one night Ray was laying on the couch and his blood sugar dropped too low and he couldn't get to me, he was too weak. Shelly came to my bedroom door and barked and barked until I got up to check and she ran to the living room and over to the couch and that's when I found Ray, almost unconscious. She saved his life.
She never got to have puppies of her own, but Ray had a female cat that had kittens and she would herd them like sheep in the backyard to make sure they didn't get too far away. Poppy (the mother cat) just layed in the sunshine and let Shelly take care of them.
She was a wonderful pet and I miss her so very much. Thank you for listening."

Duncan (Scotty) Chillin' in the Pool
Duncan our 3 year old Scottish Terrier also likes to chill in the pool but he does not like to get wet! He does however enjoy floating around on someone else's mat!
We ordered Duncan from a breeder in Nebraska and he was air shipped to us here in Massachusetts when he was 12 weeks old. He also enjoys playing fetch with his tennis ball.

Today's Tips
Tips for cooking when camping. Post your tips.
Apply cooking oil to your camp grill to help prevent food from sticking to it.
If you are cooking it in a pot, make sure to put the lid on it.
The food will cook faster and it will help keep dirt and insects out of your meal.
Use aluminum foil to cook items like potatoes and other vegetables on the grill. Just wrap them up with a little butter and cook until done.

Away with Pesky Roaches! If anyone should have roaches in the kitchen/house, it should be me! Life is difficult for the organizationally impaired! A friend shared this tip with me in 1974, and I have been roach free since, in rental properties, and in my own home for the past 25 years. This is the "Solution".
Get powdered boric acid (available over the counter in the pharmacy). Add approximately 1/4 cup boric acid to 3 cups of water. Boil in a saucepan until the boric acid is dissolved. When the solution has cooled, put in a spray bottle. Spray the boric acid solution on all surfaces inside empty cabinets (sides and top as well). Allow to completely dry and put in shelf paper before replacing items in cabinets. The boric acid that coats the surfaces under the shelf paper will dehydrate any roaches and most other insects and will keep them away!

Bringing a separate cooler just for beverages will help keep your other food cool. That way people can open and close to the cooler for beverages without letting cold air out of your cooler with meat and other perishables. Also, save space by freezing some water bottles. You will have some fresh water and not have to pack as much ice.

Bringing Electronic Devices When Camping
If you are bringing electronic devices or flashlights, remove the batteries before packing and store them in a ziplock bag. That way if something accidentally gets flipped on, you won't run down your batteries.

I just got a six month old kitten who's meaner than spit. She growls if anyone comes near her and bites if you try to touch her. She was scared when I brought her home and I was allowed to hold and pet her. As soon as she got used to the household, she started attacking anything that came by. Does anyone know what to do with a cat like this? Help!

Burning Wood Pellets in a Non-pellet Stove?
Has anyone tried burning wood pellets in a regular wood burning stove or fireplace? My parents have a wood stove and it is getting hard for them to have to haul firewood in from the yard everyday (heavy, messy, etc...). They can't afford to get a new pellet stove but I don't see why pellets would not work in the stove they have. It would be much easier to just scoop them out of a bag.
If anyone has experience with this (good or bad) let me know. I may just buy some and give it a try, but I would like some advice.
Thanks,
Joyann C

Thank you,

Disposing of Household Hazardous Waste
By Ellen Brown
According to the EPA, the average American household produces around 160 pounds of hazardous waste per year. Much of that waste comes from common household products. Many of those products contain dangerous chemicals that when discarded, contribute to environmental contamination-especially of local water supplies. To "clean up" the confusion on how to get rid of those toxic chemicals, here is a handy guide to proper disposal of some common household hazardous wastes.
