Thrifty Chocolate Cake

Ingredients

  • 3 oz. unsweetened chocolate
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup sweet milk
  • 1/4 cup cold water
  • 3 1/3 cups flour
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2 stiffly beaten egg whites
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 2 Tbsp. boiling water

Directions

Combine in top part of a double boiler: chocolate, 1 cup sugar, and 1 cup milk to white the egg yolks have been added and beaten up. Cook, stirring constantly, until smooth and thick. Add flavoring and put aside to cool. Cream together the shortening and 1 cup sugar. Then add the 1/2 cup milk and cold water. Sift and then measure the flour; add salt. Combine with the creamed mixture and then to that, add the cooled chocolate mixture. Fold in egg whites. Lastly, add the soda which has been dissolved in boiling water. Turn into 3 layer cake pans, well greased and floured. Bake in a 350 degree F oven for 30 minutes, or until done. (This cake is cheaper to make than some others and it has a very good flavor).
