Today's Tips

Save Money Use Bulk Powdered Milk

Save money on both milk and gas by adjusting to using powdered milk. We were out of milk, and I happened to have some dry milk that had recently been given to me. I mixed up a couple quarts, and to my surprise, my husband and son actually prefer it to the milk I've been buying.

So we won't be making any special trips to a store to buy milk for a while. I have 40 pounds of the milk powder :-)

Bread Machine Tip

Here's an easy way to remove the paddle from your bread machine without a lot of mess. Next time you go out for Chinese food ask for chopsticks. They are free so take them home and when your bread is ready to be removed from the bread maker, turn the loaf upside down & place one of the chopsticks in the middle of the hole of the paddle. Gently remove.

Buy Hamburger in Bulk

Buy hamburger in bulk package divide into desired amount then put in freezer bags and mash flat. This is great for saving room in your freezer. It also helps when thawing out the meat, it's a lot faster.

Salvaging Pantyhose

To save money on pantyhose, when you get a run in one leg, just cut off that leg and save the other one. Then when you get a run in one leg of another pair, cut off that leg. You can then wear both pairs of panty hose with one leg, to make a matching pair! This will save you lots of money in the long run, especially if you buy the same brand and color all the time.

It's Garage Sale Season!

A garage sale is a great way to get organized. The less stuff you have the less you have to organize. Clean out the garage and determine everything you are ready to get rid of. Check your local weather report and plan a garage sale. You can make a little money and get out from under your clutter. Arrange with a local charity to pick up your unsold items at the sales end so that you never have to see them again. Spring is a good time to let go of items that are just in your way!

Featured Feedback: Give Your Children the Gift of Thrift

It's never too early to teach thriftiness. This best done by example. I always watch the register tape at the store to be sure things are rung correctly. Many stores give the item free or at least a price adjustment and a few dollars off if an item rings wrong. I can't begin to tell you how often this happens. I always check markdown bins at the market and department stores, however, if you can't use it, it's no bargain. I know where clearance centers are for many stores and shop them FIRST. I reinvent reinvented leftovers. Roast chicken became cold chicken and becomes chicken and noodles tonight.

Featured Feedback: Bleach Stains from my Washer are Driving Me Nuts!

Yeah, I learned the hard way to always add the soap to the water before putting clothes in. You have to dilute a lot of these laundry detergents before they make contact with your clothes. Especially if you are a bargain hunter and change detergents from time to time when you find a deal.

I had problems with liquid detergent staining clothing and powdered detergent sticking to clothing and not getting rinsed off. Sometimes when you dry clothing without seeing the stuck-on powdered detergent it will set a stain or discoloration on clothing. At best those clothes need to be re-washed. So, I always let the water run for a while, add the soap, then add the clothes and I haven't had a problem since.

The fabric softener may also be the problem.

Today's Recipe: Macaroni and Tomato Juice

A quick and tasty recipe.

- 1 Cup Macaroni or other shaped pasta
- 2 1/2 cups Tomato Juice
- 1 Tablespoon Butter
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Mozzarella cheese according to your taste

Cook macaroni as package directs. Drain. Return to saucepan and add other ingredients.

Cook until thick but still juicy. Put mozzarella cheese in bowl and pour hot macaroni over to melt. Serve with garlic bread

Clean Wood Table

I just purcased an old (I am guessing at least 40 years) butcher block wood table. It is worn and very dirty around the edges. I would like to clean it. I am afraid to sand it as I do not want to ruin the finish. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanx, Ralphed

Cherry Season
By Jennifer A. Wickes

Cherries have been known to date back as early as 300 BC. They were given their name after a town, Cerasus, in Turkey. During the Middle Ages, it was decided that cherries should be eaten at the beginning of the meal. Cherries were thought to be a "cold" fruit that lowered the body temperature and would make people susceptible to fevers.
