Squeek the Cat

Squeek is 3 years old. We fell in love with this little guy at the humane society. He was 4 months old when we got him.

Other than eating, he loves playing with his favorite toy, the ring that seals a gallon of milk and he also loves curling up in any available lap. I've given up buying expensive toys, kind of like a child prefering the box a toy came in!

Squeek used to be terribly afraid of watermelons, he would growl and hiss at it from a distance, hairs on end, etc.

Squeek likes bananas and sauerkraut! (these are very rare things we allow!)

Threading a Sewing Machine Needle

Threading a Needle on a Sewing Machine If you misplace your needle threader, (as I did today) place a white index card behind the needle, and you will be able to see the eye of the needle more clearly, thus making it easier to thread.

It will also help greatly if you clip the end of the thread with the scissors.

Mimi (Chihuahua - Terrier)

Mimi is an 11 year old chihuahua - terrier mix. We got her from a lady selling puppies, Mimi was 8 weeks old when we got her. Her favorite thing is to go to the park and run around then go walking through the neighborhood.

Mimi is very smart, sings if you ask her and knows around 100 or more words and commands. She's very attentive and loves little children. She has recently become a diabetic, but with her rx shots and special diet she is doing really well. If your dog is diabetic, please know with just some extra care they can have a long life.

Coffee Can Snowman Craft Project

I spray painted an old coffee can with white spray paint then sponged white acrylic white paint for a textured look. I painted on black eyes, glued on a button nose and drew on a smile. Using a sponge, I dabbed on a touch of red paint for rosy cheeks.

The hat and scarf were made from scrap fleece material. Sew or glue a seam on the hat and tie the top with a rubber band and cut in strips to the rubber band. If you want you can glue holly berries to the hat. I stuffed the inside with a present or cookies and gave as a gift.

It can be used each year a decoration or passed on and refilled with whatever will fit.

Almost Free Boredom Busters
By Kelly Ann Butterbaugh

In June the kids aren't bored yet; the thrill of summer vacation is still upon them. However, August is another story. Entertaining children isn't cheap, either. With movie prices at $6 or higher and gas soaring in its price per gallon, how can you keep the kids busy and your budget happy? Try these almost free activities.

Summer Programs

Most libraries and many churches offer summer programs for kids. Besides the typical summer reading programs and Vacation Bible School, they may offer exciting activities such as pj story times, sing-alongs, and craft sessions.

Campfire Night

Head to the great outdoors in your own backyard. Fire up the chiminea or the fire pit, or if you live in the country it might be the burn barrel. If these aren't already in your yard, create a fake fire with construction paper and place an electric lantern in the middle. (Be creative but safe in your "fire" creation.) Then, unroll the sleeping bags around your "fire" and feast upon s'mores, hot dogs, and popcorn. Have each person tell a story or check out a book of campfire stories from the library.

Theme Week

Invest some time and creativity into "theme week." Have family members identify places of interest and focus each night's dinner and after dinner activities on that area. Monday could be Hawaii night with shish-ka-bobs and pineapple upside-down cake followed by a campy beach or exploding volcano movie. Make Tuesday a trip to Australia and roast shrimp on the barby before having a sack race like kangaroos.

Resident Artist

Get out the sidewalk chalk and create a masterpiece in the driveway. Either create a family mural or have the kids invent a new game that involves a large game board. No driveway? Try a roll of butcher paper on the wall for a graffiti wall instead.

Nature ABC

Practice alphabet skills by having children find items of nature that begin with each letter of the alphabet. Use your own backyard or travel to a park to host your game. Encourage the children to draw or write down the items rather than collect them in order to preserve the flora. (Besides, bringing back a squirrel for S might be challenging!)

Guest Chefs

Put the kids in charge of preparing the week's meals (or just one meal if you're not too brave.) Draw a food pyramid for them to plan the elements of the meal, and then have them make the grocery list. With your supervision give them the responsibility of helping with the shopping and the preparation of the meal(s). No more complaining about dinner, and lots of educational value!

Satisfaction Guaranteed

Most foods and over-the-counter medicines have "satisfaction guaranteed" printed on them. If you don't care for something, take it back to the store or call the toll-free number that is located on the package. Most of the time they will either refund your money or give you coupons for something else.

Working in a Small Kitchen

Since I have a small kitchen, I sometimes run out of room. Earlier today, while I was bagging up warm popcorn into individual servings, I needed some room to put the bags as I finished each of them. I searched and found a tote bag and I put one of it's handles on the kitchen drawer knob, next to where I was standing, making the bag, gaping open. This worked out perfectly, as I was able to drop each sealed bag into the tote bag as I finished with it. It didn't take up what little space I had available on the counter and it was out of the way so it didn't get knocked off.

Plastic Lids for Freezing Hamburgers

I save plastic lids from margarine or cottage cheese or the same size lids, and when making up hamburger patties (using a tupperware pattie form) I put a pattie on each lid, then top with another lid then another pattie. Freeze in a large plastic bag, when needing just a few patties at one time, it is very easy to separate and take what is needed.

A Magnet for Keeping Small Metal Items Together In My Purse

A few months ago, I accidently dropped a small magnet in my purse which sank to the bottom. When I fished around and found the magnet, it was attached to my nail clippers and all of the other small metal objects laying in the bottom of my purse like pins, paperclips, etc. I decided to leave it there so now I can find these small objects a lot easier. It also makes it easier to clean out my purse because all small objects come out in one piece.

By Sharon Y from Bonita Springs,FL

Editors Note: Be careful with having strong magnets near credit and debit cards as they can erase the information on the strip. Cell phones and other electronic devices can also be affected by magnets.

Dish Soap for Toilet Clogs

If your toilet is clogged and you can't find a plunger or a plumber; just squirt in some liquid dish detergent, wait 15 minutes, flush and it's on it's way!

By Marnita from Cumming, GA

Editor's Note: I would be careful with this one. If for some reason the dish detergent doesn't help break down the clog you could end up with an overflowing toilet. Might work for minor clogs.
