Monterey, California

This is a beautiful spot at Monterey, California. My late sister, Norma loved to feed the squirrels and birds there. We would take bread and peanuts for them. This picture was taken in 1993. Great granny Vi

Boss Hogg

This is our new family member Boss (Hogg). He is 6 weeks old, fuzz ball breed. LOL. We found him on freecycle . He came into our family after losing our Harley cat to FLUTD. His favorite thing to do is attack your (my) ankles in the morning while making coffee or sleeping on Dad's shoulders.

Today's Tips

Saving Money on Shipping and Packing Material

Tips and ideas for saving money on shipping and packing material. Post your ideas.

Packing Peanuts

Always try to have one smaller garbage sack of packing peanuts stored somewhere out of your way but still assessable when you need it. Purchasing packing peanuts for any reason is expensive, but if you save them from packages you have already received, you won't have to buy them. I limit myself to no more than I would normally use in a year and donate the remainder to others (people who sell on e-Bay always need more!).

Baked Potato Tips

Tips for making good, baked potatoes. Post your ideas.

When baking potatoes in the oven, instead of just wrapping them in foil and placing in the oven. Have your sheets of tin foil ready. Wash your potatoes as normally. Dry them. Then rub a small amount of cooking oil over them, wrap in tin foil and place in the oven for 1 hr. The potatoes will have a much better taste, this way.

Using Leftovers of Powdered Foundation Makeup

When my powdered foundation compacts are almost all empty in the center but still have a little around the edges that are hard to get to, I've been sticking them in a drawer, not knowing what to do with them.

Until recently, I found a little tin, that I've taken a sharp knife and gotten out all the excess powder that's still in the compacts and combined it all in a bowl to crush and then put in the tin with a lid.

So now, I can use a make-up brush and use the excess powdered foundation as I normally would, tossing out all the old compacts afterwards, thus cleaning out my drawer and none of my powdered foundation goes to waste, either.

Uses for Old Christmas or Greeting Cards

I have been using old greeting cards, valentines, excess scrapbook paper, etc. to make postcards. I just use the scraps and a glue stick on 4X6 index cards. This is great for all the sweeps entries I mail out. Other people have used other creative materials to make post cards - cereal boxes, etc.

Cleaning a Lampshade

Tips for cleaning lampshades. Post your ideas.

Dusting Lampshades

To clean dusty lampshades, I use a tape-roller lint brush (the kind with sticky tape). Just roll it up and down around the lampshade. Works Great!

Frugal Planter Ideas

Ideas for inexpensive planters. Post your ideas.

Using Plastic Lids from Pies, etc.

I use the clear plastic lids that come with pies, salads, etc. to put underneath planters outside to catch the water so the plants do not become bone dry. These come in a variety of sizes and will usually fit under various sized pots. Also, I recycle those plastic containers that take-out food comes in (usually black on the bottom with clear lids) to start my seeds indoors -- just add your sterilized potting mix and add your clear plastic top -- voila! A free seed starting kit. I also use the plastic shopping bags from the grocery store to line all my small baskets in the house.

Saving School Papers

Tips for saving and storing school papers. Post your ideas.

I use the backpacks from my children at the end of the year to store all of the papers and projects for that school year. better then storing in a box because you can see what they made that year and and what backpack they had. It's fun too see the Ninja Turtle backpack from 10 years ago.

Use For Leftover Meat Loaf

If you have too much meat loaf left after a meal but not enough for another meal, try this suggestion. Refrigerate overnight, then cut into medium cubes the next morning (won't crumble as easily). Place cubes on cookie sheet and freeze.

Bag in ziploc bag and use in spaghetti sauce the next time you want the taste of meatballs but not the fuss of making them. Tastes the same ~ kids love the "new" meatball shape.

Only husband knows the secret, and he sure doesn't care! By freezing the cubes on the cookie sheet first, they won't stick together in the bag when freezing and you can pour out only what you need.

Organizing Coupons

Need a place to put store coupons until you get them separated and filed? Take the bottom cardboard portion from a loaf of Velveeta Cheese, and glue expired coupons until all surfaces are covered on all sides, overlapping them at angles to cover. Use household glue. When thoroughly dried, keep this easy to locate box somewhere in your kitchen. You'll never again have to hunt for where those loose coupons are, it lasts for years and will accommodate even those extra long coupons. Even someone who doesn't read well will recognize this box for what its intended purpose is!

Uses for Velveeta Boxes

Ideas for reusing Velveeta boxes. Post your ideas.

Instead of automatically purchasing plastic drawer dividers, try using the Velveeta cheese cardboard box bottom. It's heavy duty and lasts a long time. I use four of these in one drawer (along with a previously purchased plastic tray divider) and it fills the entire drawer nicely. I keep all sizes of batteries needed separated in these and I can tell at a glance when I need to get more batteries.

Car Parts Joke

A woman called an import parts warehouse and asked for a 28 ounce water pump.

"A what?" said the confused parts guy.

"My husband says he needs a 28 ounce water pump."

"A 28 ounce water pump? What kind of car does it fit?"

"A Datsun."

As the parts guy wrote down "Datsun, 28 ounce water pump" the light in his head went on. "Oh yes ma'am. We've got 28 ounce water pumps. We have 24 ounce and 26 ounce water pumps, too."

"Finally, " she said. "You're the first place I've called that knew what I was talking about."

"Yes ma'am. That's because we're a full-service parts warehouse; it's our job to have the parts you need, like a 28 ounce water pump," he said.

He smiled as he jotted down the customer pick-up information: "Datsun 280Z water pump, part number..."

Dog Itching

I'm not sure on her breed. She is actually my mom and stepdad's dog. Shortly after moving from Texas to Louisiana the dog started scratching and wouldn't stop. She is scratching herself to the point of breaking the skin and losing her hair. The vet has claimed for a few years now that it is allergies but nothing he has tried has worked. They recently found out she has a tumor but the vet won't operate until the scratching clears up. They are going to bring her to me in Texas and hope she will clear up so we can have the operation instead of put down. There has already been two dogs lost this year. She's always had flaky skin... So I'm thinking that maybe it is dry skin. Is there anything that someone might know of that might help and show rapid results so I can get her in to a vet and have the operation done?

How to make a lovely presentation of plated food.

I am trying to figure out ways to present chicken salad for a formal or at the very least an upscale luncheon. I plan to use my Azalea dishes and want the plate to look very exciting visually or professionally done. I have searched the Net to find "decoration" or "pretty presentation" without much success. Sure would appreciate any help.

Thanks, Mitzi

Dried On Cooking Oil On Clothing

Can anyone help me ... I did not realize a piece of clothing had cooking oil on it before washing - washed in cold water, dried as per usual ... discovered grease stain after washed and dried. Any way of getting out a grease stain once a piece of clothing has been dried in the dryer? Thanks.

Eco-Friendly Baby Shower Gift?

I would like to get my friend's little one off to a healthy, non-toxic, earth-friendly start, and I need to spend less than $30. I could just get a small gift basket from one of the on-line shops I've seen, but with those, you end up paying $7.50 each for smallish bottles of lotion, shampoo, etc. Is this a good deal?

Training your dog with 2 simple words.
By Jane Simpson

HEEL

With the puppy leashed and on the left side, walk at the regular pace, from time to time repeating the word HEEL slowly. Accompany the command by a little slap on your left leg and occasionally by stooping down as you pet and say to him, "That's fine, that's good," etc. Pay no attention if he pulls but walk straight ahead. He'll have to follow if you do not stop. Should his resistance prove too strong, or if he attempts to break away, or run in front of you or too far to the left, it may be advisable to practise the lesson near a wall. He will then be between you and the wall, and will be compelled to follow at your left side. If he grows excited, quiet him down with a softspoken, HEEL! After a little while he will find it best to obey.

Exercise Walking For Seniors: Preventing Foot Problems
By Christine Dobrowolski

Exercise has a very important role in the general health and the quality of life of everyone, but especially in seniors. Seniors who walk tend to look younger, sleep more soundly and have fewer visits to the doctor. Walking for 30 to 60 minutes four to six days a week will help improve osteoarthritis and decrease the risk of osteoporosis, heart disease, hypertension, diabetes and obesity. Walking is the top recreational sport for seniors.
