Daily Thrifty Tips - March 12, 2007

Volume Six, Number 49, March 12, 2007 (Read It Online)

Hello,

Thanks to all of you for your lovely birthday wishes and comments on the site and by email. I had a lovely day with 2 meals out, one with friends and the other with my sons and a movie. I heard from my 3 daughters, Stella in Vietnam, Jess in Portland and Mara in Seattle and also my sister Sally who shares the birthday with me (she's my twin 3 years younger.) The birthday song video from my grandsons was a real treat! All in all it was a wonderful birthday.

We have another wonderful article by Debra Frick, this one is called Soup's On, and it is a great guide to making soup. You can find it in the More Reading section.

Here's today's featured request...

Low Fat Baked Goods

Does anyone have any baking recipes using healthy oil instead of hard margarine, lard, butter, etc.? I am on a low fat medical diet but still like cakes, pastry, and other baked goods. Please help.

Crocheted Bags Out Of VHS Tapes

I want to suggest the craft tip of recycling those old VHS tapes and plastic bags. I have a website that I have crafted evening bags and purses out of these recycled materials by crocheting. I have free patterns and instructions available.

My website is http://www.myrecycledbags.com/ which is dedicated to recycling and crafting. Pictures of my crocheted VHS tape evening bags are at my website.

Thanks for letting me share this.

Re-Covered Stroller

I bought a sturdy stroller at a yard sale for only $2.00! I brought it home to hear my husband say it is the ugliest stroller ever! So I soon made plans to re-cover it! It was a lot easier than I thought. It was basically seam ripping, tracing onto the new fabric and re-assembling!The only drawback was the color range was limited by the teal plastic accessories. I hope it inspires you!

Spoon For Tongue Cleaning

For a healthy feeling in our mouths, it is important to clean our tongues. I found the cheapest and best tool is a smooth teaspoon scraped down the tongue. You will be surprised at the results.

Creating Quality Home Movies

When making home movies of your family be sure to keep the camera steady. Camera work that moves violently is very difficult to watch. When moving the camera, pan as slowly as possible and avoid zooming quickly or too often.

Do you have any home movie tips to share? Post them below.

Hairspray For Pest Control

If you have gnats in your home, you can use holding hair spray to get them out your way. Just spray in the air when you see them and they will drop. The hair spray sticks to their wings.

Watching HDTV For "Free"

In order to save money, we canceled our Dish Network satellite service about a year ago. We like to watch movies and many are in widescreen format, which looked tiny on our old 27" TV. We finally broke down and replaced our television with a new HD flat screen TV. We got a 37" Visio at Costco for about $900. A lot of money but is really is a different viewing experience. My computer is across the hall on the side of the TV and I can still make out the picture pretty well, especially if I lean back a bit.

As soon as we got it home, my husband started bugging me to get the dish reactivated or sign up for cable. Now, that is an additional $40 - $60 for the cheapest service. He likes to watch basketball and there are a couple of shows we like to watch as a family. Plus it is nice to have PBS for my preschooler. None of these really require cable, just broadcast TV.

My brother pointed out that our new TV had the digital HD receiver built in and we should be able to get channels that way. We tried it directly and were able to get a few religious and shopping channels that way, but not the regular broadcast channels like NBC and CBS. So we tried attaching the coax cable from the dish that they never uninstalled and pointed it toward Portland, where the TV antennas are. All of the sudden, we had most of the regular channels in crystal clear high definition! Some of them came in poorly still so we did a little research and bought a $35.00 antenna from Radio Shack to boost the signal. A one time investment for gorgeous HDTV.

That first night, we watched the local PBS station's HD channel. It was a performance of "The Magic Flute" at the Met in New York. It was stunningly beautiful and something I could never take my kids to see, even if I could afford it (which I couldn't). They loved it, 4 and 6 and watching opera!

Occasionally, we will get scrambled signals if it is stormy or as someone passes by the antenna but they are usually temporary. Worst case scenario, I get up and move the antenna around a little bit. I had more problems with signals with both regular cable and the dish. The only downside is that I can't get Comedy Central but I can live with that! I also only have TV reception on one television in the house but that promotes family togetherness and we can always watch a DVD on the old television if there is a conflict.

As you probably know, the regular analog broadcast channels are going to be entirely converted over to digital by 2009. Anyone who wishes to avoid cable or satellite charges for television will have to have a new HD ready TV or a tuner (which, I hear, are very expensive). If you have one of these TV's already, why not try saving the money instead of paying. It was much easier than I ever expected. There are more expensive antennas that you can get to assure a good signal but I would start small and see how it works.

Anyone who is within 30 or so miles of a big city should have no trouble, rural areas can be more problematic. Here is a website which will tell you where to point your antenna, what kind to get and other useful information.

Felt As A Dusting Cloth

I had a piece of felt left over from a craft project with felt squares. I was about to put it away when I decided to see how it worked as a dust cloth. Wow, great. It picks up everything. It also fits on the swifter duster. Felt is inexpensive, can be washed easily and reused, instead of filling the landfills with the disposable dusters.

Teen With Stretch Marks

I'm a teenager and have stretch marks where they are easily seen. It's affecting my self esteem a lot seeing that I am a model and bathing suit season is coming soon. I am in shape, I just wanna be able to throw on a bathing suit or wear a (v) cut shirt or wear a belly shirt without seeing stretch marks everywhere.

If someone could help, this would be greatly appreciated. Something cheap and fast please.

Thank you.

Growing a Tree from a Willow Cutting

On Valentine's Day 2007, I received some roses with beautiful greenery! On of the pieces of greenery was a Curly Willow branch which is growing it's leaves. I live in Houston, Texas and would like to know exactly what to do to grow this Curly Willow Tree. The florist said a lot of the greenery they put in their vases comes from out of the country. So I'm not sure if this one will live here. I have it still in the vase with clean water along with other greenery that came in the vase. Also my yard is clay so I need to know what to do! I'd love to have this as a tree in my back yard. Should I put root hormone on the bottom of the stem and put it in a pot with Miracle Grow Soil?

Thanks a million!

Male Cat Getting Friendly With Another Male Cat

I got 2 new 9 month old male kittens. I brought them into a home with neutered male and female cats (all are neutered by the way). The oldest reigning male cat of the household is started to try and be overly friendly with the biggest male kitten! This is so gross. How do we fix this? I've done the water bottle squirting in the face. Still happened again. In the meantime, my next action until I get a better suggestion is to continue to squirt with water and put him in the timeout box (the pet taxi carrier). Leave him there for a bit. Might even make him sleep there in the nighttime to avoid a problem while asleep. I don't know what else to do. Anyone else had this problem and solved it, and if so, how so? Thanks to everyone in advance for the help!

Fabric Covered Photo Album

I just love this site. So many great people out there that are willing to help us dummies that don't know or forget how to do things. Anyway, I was wondering if their is anyone that can tell me how to cover a photo album. The kind that is padded with quilting and fabric and can be trimmed with lace. You then can put a picture of someone on the front. It's like something you would do for a special wedding album but this one is for everyday use. Hopefully someone will know what I'm talking about. For one thing, what kind of glue do you use? God Bless each and everyone of you.

Help My Tea Rose

I have a tea rose/potted miniature rose that I think I may have killed. When I transferred it to a bigger pot it was really dry. I had been watering it but apparently not enough. All of the leaves fell off. I have been keeping it moist because the branches themselves are still green. I have it sitting in a cool room where it receives sunlight most of the day. Is it dead or gone dormant?
Please help this poor plant survive being owned by me. I look at it and feel so sad for this poor plant.

Soup's On
By Debra Frick

With all the cold weather we have been having, a bowl of steaming soup brings us back to our mother's and grandmother's kitchens. Soup is a labor of love. Even if you don't like to cook, most of us can heat a can of soup and magically be brought back to that time and place. Even better, when you make your own soup, you can make a pot and freeze the leftovers. Now when you need a quick and fast dinner, all you have to do is reheat the soup, make a salad or a sandwich and dinner's on!
