Barkley (Lab/Beagle)

Barkley is almost 4 1/2 years old and is a lab/beagle mix. He was left in the dumpster in a box, outside my work in Hinesville, GA. It was October 2003. At the time, we were stationed at Fort Stewart, GA

He likes to run and play fetch with his toys, but his most favorite thing to do is lay in the warm sun right next to you.

He has made a great addition to our family and I would not trade him in for anything in the world. An as you can tell by his picture if you told him he was a dog he would not believe you one bit.

Insulating Hideaway Stairs

To help with heating and cooling our house, we insulated over our hideaway attic stairs by making a box type frame out of Styrofoam insulation to fit over the stairs opening. To make it sturdy, we doubled the thickness of the one-half inch insulation by sandwiching the pieces together. After getting the pieces cut out, we used duct tape to put it all together. When I want to go up into the attic, I just turn it over on the side out of the way. We did this during the winter months and immediately could tell a difference in our heating and I do believe it is going to make a big difference in cooling our house this summer as well.

Craft: Baby Food Jar Tea Lites

Wondering what to do with baby food jars? Make tea lites!

Supplies

  • Baby Food Jar (washed and cleaned with alcohol)
  • 8 inch decorative beads (the ones sewn onto cloth tape)
  • Glass Etching Cream
  • Antiquing Gel
  • Acrylic Paint - brown and tan
  • Clear Satin Spray Paint (I like Kilz because it doesn't yellow)
  • Small piece of felt
  • Small piece of contact paper
  • Craft Glue
  • Tea Lite (the battery powered ones are great)

Instructions

Brush etching cream on jar. No need to do the rim or the bottom. Let sit overnight. Be sure to place the jar on a thick rag or towel to protect your work surface. Doing more than one at a time makes it more worthwhile. Wash dried cream off with soap and warm water. If not totally etched, reapply cream and let sit overnight again.

Cut a piece of contact paper to about the size of a half-dollar. Stick on side of jar. Make sure all edges are flat. This is going to be your little window for the light to shine through. Brush on brown paint. Let dry. Brush on crackle medium and let sit 5 minutes. Brush on Tan paint. Let dry. Brush on Antiquing gel and gently rub off excess. Let dry.

Remove the contact paper circle. Spray with clear spray paint. Let dry. Spray another coat and let dry. Cut a piece of felt to fit the bottom of the jar. Glue on. Glue beads around rim of jar overlapping at the end. Be sure to put glue on the end of the tape to keep it from raveling.

Put in your tea lite and watch it glow! You can see a battery powered lite in the jar on the left.

These can be done in other colors as well. Just be sure to put on several coats so the light doesn't shine through. I just like to make my glass look like ceramic. Make sure you spray the clear paint on at least two coats to protect the finish.

Craft Project: Easy Crocheted Butterflies
By Debra Frick

These easy crocheted butterflies are easy enough for a beginner crocheter and can be used for many things. These would be wonderful for Mother's Day or a birthday. You could easily whip up a bunch of these to be used to decorate Mother's Day presents or to hang in a window or make them into napkin rings. Made in thread and attaching a pin back and they also could be used for a pin or the center of a corsage. They also could be glued to a branch for a centerpiece or glued to a wreath with spring flowers for a beautiful one of a kind spring wreath. They also can be used as refrigerator magnets. The best part is they only use up that scrap yarn that you have leftover from other projects. You only have to know two basic stitches to make them, chain stitch and double crochet cluster stitch.

Time to make: about a half hour

Materials

  • Scrap yarn
  • G crochet hook
  • Iridescent pipe cleaners

Instructions

Chain 8 join to form circle.

Chain 3 double crochet twice chain one 3 double crochet chain one until you have eight cluster stitches. Join.

Chain 3 double crochet twice more chain 2 and in same space double crochet three more times. ( like the corner of a granny square) continue around until you are back where you started 3 double crochet chain 2 to complete.

Fold in half and wrap the center with the iridescent pipe cleaner. Starting on the outside edge of your butterfly slip stitch to attach and chain 3 slip stitch chain 3 slip stitch evenly around the outside edge.

Use Baby Wipes For Cleaning Eyes

When I woke up with one eye sealed shut, I knew I needed to clean the area. I didn't want to use face cloths because if it was "pink eye" or conjunctivitis, it could spread. I had some baby wipes with Aloe, Vitamin E and NO alcohol and tried them. They worked GREAT! The condition improved quickly and healed in a few days. I was impressed. Now, I also use them on my dogs' eyes when they are weepy. I'm a believer.

Use And Store Each Year's Photo Memory Card

Many of us now have digital cameras and if you are like me, the pictures rarely go any farther than the computer. We tend to buy the biggest memory cards that hold sometimes 600 pictures. I decided to buy the card that holds the least amount of pictures.

I purchase a new memory card each January and use it throughout the year. At the end of the year I will mark the card with 2008 and put it in our fire proof safe.

The memory card acts as your negatives, if your computer crashes, you will have a backup be able to replace your treasured photos

Check Boating Or Sporting Goods Stores For Shoe Deals

Boating stores have great sales on boat shoes and other sporting shoes! My husband is addicted to Topsider sailing moccasins gotten on sale. They are sporty and sturdy, he gets them at 1/2 off and they last and last. He also just got a nice pair of leather sneakers for me for $9! So check out boating stores (and sporting goods stores like Big 5) for their sales and great deals on well-made casual shoes.

Frugal Trips To The Movies

I bought this large purse at a garage sale that works perfect for storing your snacks and drinks in. We never go to the new release shows, because they soon will be out at Dollar Theaters. My kids and I go to the Dollar Tree and I let them pick out 1 snack.

I pack them each a Gatorade also. And me water. This works great also when you are dieting and can't eat the stuff the movies provide. I packed myself 4 Slim Jims with 2 cheese sticks. I also packed us some Veggie Chips, you can buy at Sam's Club and separate them into small snack size servings. My kids understand when we have to live on a budget. We save a lot of money and trim our waistlines too. We just make sure we take home our trash in my purse, so we don't leave it on the floor.

I hope this helps others, as it helps my family.

Use Glow Bracelets for Nighttime Power Outages

Next time you are at the dollar store, pick up some of those Glo-Bracelets that light up when you crack them. Keep them tucked away to use the next time there is a night time thunderstorm. Just crack a bracelet open, (causing it to light up) and hang it on your little one's door knob. This way, if the electricity goes out during the night, your child will still be able to find their way to their door and then will be able to use the Glo-Bracelet as a little flashlight. My 9 year old daughter thought of this idea on a stormy night!

Store Parenting Essentials in a Separate Backpack

I'm a mom of four young kids and I'm constantly packing a TON OF STUFF with me. When I started feeling like a pack mule in the grocery store, I decided I needed to do something different. I put the bare minimums into a smaller, nicer purse that I'm not embarrassed to carry around in public, and then I got a small backpack for everything else. The backpack holds a small medical kit for emergencies, wipes,a small pack of shampoo and other "emergency overnight" stuff, hairbrush, teething tablets and gel, flashlight, etc. Ya know, the stuff mama is expected to have in order to save the world.

The result? I can dash into the store without incurring a hernia, and yet still have everything I need on the front seat of the car in case I need it. Like the garage sale I was at when a couple slid their motorcycle around the corner and into the ground. I had my gear to patch up a little road rash. And my handsome leather bag doesn't bulge at the seams or leak crackers and paci's everywhere I go!

Adapting Crochet Patterns For Dollhouses

I joined ThriftyFun today. I was looking at the craft projects and was impressed with the ideas for dollhouse decor. I am an accomplished dollhouse creator and have been making dollhouses for about 50 years.

Patterns for crocheted items are extremely difficult to find. My solution: I choose "ANY" pattern that is made from crochet thread or yarn. I crochet with sewing thread and a size 14 crochet hook, instead of crochet thread. For yarn, I use three strands of embroidery floss and a size 5 crochet hook. Separate the floss, tie the ends together (all three together to the other three) and wind balls of floss. Crochet right from the spool of thread.

I hope you will try this for your dollhouse projects.

Source: This came from necessity and the difficulty in finding patterns.

Using the Slow Cooker in Hot Weather

It is 96 degrees and humid today, so I took out my trusty slow cooker this morning. Cooking in the slow cooker keeps my kitchen cooler, plus the whole meal can be cooked in one container. My slow cooker is great for less tender cuts of meat, which are less expensive to purchase.

My husband likes my "smothered swiss steak". I put a little olive oil in a skillet and brown the meat and onions to seal in the flavor. Next, I layer the round steak, cut into serving size pieces, into the slow cooker with the onion/ Next, I add any vegetables I have on hand, usually mini carrots and several potatoes which have been washed and quartered, Add salt and pepper to taste, a can of tomato soup mixed with a 14 oz can stewed tomatoes. Then cover and cook on high for an hour, then I turn the slow cooker down to low setting and let it continue to cook 8 hours. Serve with a salad and you have a great meal.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

A man was wheeling himself frantically down the hall of the hospital in his wheelchair, just before his operation. A nurse stopped him and asked, "What's the matter?"

He said, "I heard the nurse say, 'It's a very simple operation, don't worry, I'm sure it will be all right.'"

"She was just trying to comfort you, what's so frightening about that?"

"She wasn't talking to me. She was talking to the doctor!"

Protect Baby Outdoors from Ants with Baby Powder

When at the beach, the lake or anywhere outdoors, and your child is playing in a small area, you can put a line of baby powder around the area. This will keep ants away. They will not cross over the line of baby powder. This will not kill them, just keep them out of the play area for a while.

Flying Ants

Does anyone have a remedy for tiny flying ants that are swarming one of my windows in the bedroom I rent in a shared house? My landlord refuses to do anything about it (that's another story). I get about 60-80 little flying ants about 5 or 6 PM each evening that fly around any lights when they're turned on, and are gone the next morning.

They're not termites - they have a pinched body. I don't think they're carpenter ants as they're tiny and have wings. Would Borax work, and if I sprinkle it in my room is it safe to sleep there as well? And it's very humid here - would Borax ruin the wood windowsills if I sprinkled it around the window that they congregate around?

Thanks for any help, I am really being driven crazy for now and am looking for a new place to live, but won't be able to move out for another month.

Hitachi HB-B201 Bread Not Rising

I have a Hitachi HB-B201. Off and on for the past 14 years, I have had almost zero positive luck in making bread that will rise. I have tried many differing approaches; altering the ingredients slightly this way then that, and then a lot this way and then that, and then all directions, and almost invariably, I will turn out a jolly-green-giant sized crouton.

The breads have been tasty (except for those where I eventually tripled or quadrupled the yeast). I don't ever have to worry about crushing the bread when cutting it with a dull knife; either side of the blade. Storage is no problem. It doesn't seem to carry any charm for a passing rodent. The instruction booklet says nothing about the weaponization of bread flour; so I'm guessing that I'm doing something wrong.

If anyone has any "helpful" suggestions, I would love to hear it.

Libraries Offer So Much More Than Books
By Kelly Ann Butterbaugh

Do you have a library card? If not, you're missing out. While libraries are known to offer free reading to the community, they offer a host of services to their patrons. Many libraries have lost state funding in the past years which may have caused them to stop some of these services, but there are still many benefits found through those doors. If you don't already have one, get a library card, use it, and save.

The Obvious

Don't overlook the obvious. Public libraries offer books which can meet every interest. Available are the latest magazines (which can cost anywhere from $5-$10 per issue), the bestsellers, the self-help books everyone's talking about, and anything printed on paper and put between a cover. What many don't realize is that if your library is small and doesn't carry the book you're interested in, it can get the book for you. Inter-library loan services allow libraries to borrow books from other libraries. The book arrives in a few days for you to check-out and then return to your library it is then shipped back to its original home. Some charge a fee for this service, especially if the book is coming from somewhere odd. Another option is to visit the neighboring library. In some states, library cards are transferrable to different libraries. See your librarian for specifics.

Person to Person Help

The goal of the library is to share knowledge. Reference librarians are skilled at finding information. Need help locating a book about your topic? Remember the plot but not the title? Ask the librarians for help; they're there to help you. While libraries today rely heavily on the computer to catalog their inventories, you may not feel so comfortable with it. The librarian is there to help you.

Another source of information is the reference desk itself. Look for flyers for workshops being held at your library. There are computing workshops offered, writing workshops, and tax preparation seminars. I've seen a beginners pottery class set up in our library's conference room. Most are there to promote one book or another, but free knowledge is free knowledge.

Activities

Looking for something to do as a family? Always wanted to network with other moms? Are you the only reader in your family? There are discussion groups and activities planned at many libraries. Singles groups meet to discuss books, parenting groups meet while their children have story time, and artist groups sketch together. There are family movie nights or summer book clubs that can be loads of free fun. By attending these activities you are supporting your library with your attendance.

Services

Don't overlook the other services libraries provide beside book loans. Libraries rent videos and CDs to their members for free. They also provide free internet use and cheap copying fees.

One of the greatest resources a library provides is access to thousands of dollars worth of databases. Articles and primary resources are housed in databases such as ERIC or Proquest which cost upwards of $5,000 a year in subscriptions. With a library card you have free access to these materials, and some libraries provide home access through their websites as well.

The value of the community library is often overlooked. It offers a place to sit quietly for a few moments. It offers incomprehensible amounts of knowledge. It offers community togetherness and an opportunity to become involved. And it offers it all for free.

Libraries Offer So Much More Than Books
