Low Maintenance Garden

For a low maintenance garden I Cover my garden with straw. It keeps the weeds away keeps the soil moist all the time. I grow my potatoes in a pile made from straw. It produced the best ever crop for me last year 2004.

Today's Tips

Cleaning Your Blender

Clean your blender quickly after each use by adding a small squirt of dishwashing liquid to the blender. Then fill your blender 3/4 full with hot water and run it on high for 15 seconds. Rinse with warm water.

Preventing Pantry Pests

Clean up spills in your cabinet quickly. Store food in air tight plastic, glass or metal containers. Clean food storage areas at least once a year and inspect packaging for leaks. Get rid of any packages that appear to be contaminated by insects.

Plan Your Menus

Don't "crisis cook." Shopping after work for the day's dinner gets expensive. Plan a weekly menu before shopping and watch your grocery bill shrink.

Order Your Wedding Cake Early

All parents with daughters know just how expensive planning a wedding can be. There seems to be an endless list of expenses. One of the best tips I can share is to order your cake as early as possible. My daughter is getting married in June and we ordered her cake in January. This allowed us to pay the small deposit and then make small payments until the cake was paid for! Much easier than paying the lump sum all at once!

Uses For Plastic Air Mattresses

Reusing plastic air mattresses for something other than a mattress. Post your ideas.

Save your old (or buy new--on sale, of course, or at the end of summer) plastic mattress you use to float in the pool in the summer.

Use it, deflated/flat, to cover the windshield of your car that sits outside in the winter, to keep your windshield clean and frost-free. Be sure to get one long enough to reach across the windshield and tuck inside the passenger and driver's side front doors to keep it in place.

You can usually place it just underneath the wipers to help hold it down, too! When done, just fold it up and store it in the back seat on the floor or in the trunk! Saves you some scraping to get that frost or snow off!

Carpet Spot Remover

Mix a little laundry detergent with water in a spray bottle so the next time your little one spills something on the carpet you have a ready solution and a better chance of getting the whole stain out.

Using Leftover Scalloped Potatoes

Leftover scalloped potatoes that won't be used up quickly? Load them in your blender, add milk and blend to smoothness, adding milk as necessary. Makes a great base for potato creamed soup with your choice of seasonings or other casserole base.

Real Estate Tip - A Thorough Walk Through

When thinking of purchasing a previously owned home, when doing a "walk through", you might want to move certain items that are strategically placed (ex. a big flower pot, a picture on the wall, prepacked boxes, etc.) to make sure the house is in as good of shape as it looks.

I know a couple who went for their "walk through" of their soon to be new home, who didn't do a very thorough looking around, that sure wished they had before signing on the dotted line. When the old owners moved out completely, there were holes in the walls, in several rooms, holes in the carpet, you can imagine.

They were sick to their stomachs, as not only did they have a "new" home, but they soon had to replace all the carpeting and have someone in to fix the walls, more out of pocket expenses than they'd thought they'd have. Just beware!

Cassettes or VHS Tapes of Elderly Relatives

Make cassettes or VHS (or whatever) of your elderly relatives. Ask them questions about their childhood, their dating years, anything they can and would like to talk about of years gone by. One day, when they've passed on these will be cherished keepsakes. No better way to pass on to your younger family members than words of older loved ones. Copies would make great gifts.

Eczema Help

Does anyone have suggestions for treating eczema? My son has bad cases on both ear lobes, so bad that the skin is broken and oozing. I have tried olive oil, tea tree oil, hydrocortizone creams (both over-the-counter and prescription), aloe vera, and sulfur ointments, but haven't had much luck with any of them.

I've also tried prescription Protopic and Elidel, but am stoping those because of the current investigations into possible links between these medicaitons and childhood lymphoma (the medications suppress immune functions to control the eczema, but the effects may be affecting more systemic body processes too; yikes!) Until the docs know for sure if there's a link or not, I'm going to play safe and avoid these meds.

But that leads me with few options. Can anyone help?

Lynne

Everyone was so helpful to me regarding my last request for cleaning my wood cabinets, I have a new request. My microwave is situated over my stove so when I cook or fry it splashes to the microwave. I clean the front of the microwave. with glass cleaner it shines the glass front but it does nothing to remove the grease spots left from frying...no matter what I use those little grease spots are always left behind and makes my microwave. look dirty even though I clean it down after each time I cook. HELP. What can I do use or do to get rid of those nasty little grease spots. - Adele

Helpful Hints for First-Time Home Buyers

Buying a house can be a daunting task, even for someone who has owned several homes. We had to learn a lot on our own, but at least now we feel comfortable and knowledgeable about the whole process. Here are some helpful hints we picked up along the way:
