Frugal Wedding Decorations

This is my wedding on April 29, 2006. I made everything myself and had a lot of fun, because I saved a lot of money. Take a look! All the figures were jewelry boxes and I added the bride and groom on top of jewelry box. In the inside, I added pillow candy. I then used tulle material to make little Hershey kisses souvenirs.

I made the big chocolate labels with our name and date of marriage printed out the computer and added to the Hershey bars. I also bought little wedding paper tote bags and added name, date and added fortune cookies in them.

Last, I bought angel figures and clear bags with a wedding bells print. I put the angel inside and added embellishments inside. My whole cost for the table was $50.00 dollars and I was happy ever after.

Comet (Dachshund)

Comet is a 1 year old Dachshund. My dog had her a year ago. She likes to chase her tail and chase my kitty.

I had another female Dachshund and she had Comet a year ago. When Comet was about 6 weeks old, her mother got kidnapped and I had to bottle feed Comet. Comet's mother's name was Haley so we named her puppy Comet, as in Haley's Comet. I thought that pretty clever, actually my husband had the idea. In this picture, she's giving her movie star look. lol

Decoupaged Tissue Boxes

I bought plain, plastic tissue holder covers at the Euro shop decoupaged them using paper and also fabric. I think they turned out quite nicely. I painted up to 5 coats of varnish on these as they get a lot of use. I also glued on elastic bands to the bottoms to hold the tissue box in the holder.

Poke Holes in Loaf Before Glazing

When making a dessert loaf (lemon bread, banana bread, etc.) with a glaze finish, poke holes with a toothpick, in the top of the warm loaf, and then pour the glaze over it. I've been doing this for years!

Cook Two Things In The Same Water

Whether you camp or not, here is a great way to cook two items in the same water. I tried this and it was perfect!

In your electric coffee maker, stand your corn on the cob on it's end and let it cook! I used a simple one from Rival but brand isn't important.

Next, after I cooked my cleaned corn, I added eggs and replaced the lid.

When I tried this, I imagined that I would have to reheat my eggs the next morning because before they were boiled, it began to rain and it was bedtime. Anyway so I unplugged the "poly hot pot" and let the eggs stay in the water used to cook the corn. The next morning I checked and to my surprise, the eggs were done and still warm!

I remember sitting the hot pot under the blanket I had my Coleman cooler sitting under to shade it so that may be the reason the water stayed warm overnight.

Recycle Powdered Makeup

Since the face powder in compacts can fall apart or else you use the middle and have the sides left, here's a way to "recycle" it! Take the pressed powder from compacts and crush or break up the remaining pieces. Add a small amount of rubbing alcohol and mix it to form a paste. Form into a round flat shape. As the alcohol dries, a solid cake forms again. The drying time is several hours but it will only take a few minutes to mix. This works for blush and eye shadow too.

Easy Ways To Stiffen Fabric

When crafting with fabric, there may be times when you need to stiffen your project after you create it; such as when you make a witch hat, or perhaps a fabric basket. There are many craft fabric stiffeners on the market, but some can be expensive or hard to find. One great cheap, easy alternative is to use a mixture of Elmer's glue (or other white glue) and water, and simply paint it onto your project. It will dry clear and stiff; and you can apply more than one coat depending on how stiff you'd like your fabric.

For a different and even easier option, try Krylon clear acrylic spray paint. Start with a small amount and test it on a scrap piece of fabric first. The Krylon will not discolor your fabric.

If you want to stiffen your fabric before making your item, use regular fabric starch that you find in the clothes washing isle. The powder or liquid works great!

Attract Hummingbirds with Red Shirt

I have lots of flowers outdoors, and we usually we get about 1-2 hummingbirds. This week we've counted 4 at one time. I went outdoors with a red shirt on, holding the hummingbird feeder with my arm outstretched. 2 hummers came up, and 1 ate from the feeder as I held it. My husband came out with the camera, and of course, they flew away. We will try it again to get a picture. They are so much fun to have around. They were eating the hosta flowers, too.

Keeping Ants Out My Dog's Food Bowl

I use to have problems with ants in the dog bowl until I tried this. Wash the area where the bowl was with soapy water. This destroys the ant trail scent. Ants will come back to where the food was. Move food bowl away from this area as much as possible. Fill food bowl with dog food then place bowl into a shallow cake pan filled with water. This will act as a moat and deter ants. Works GREAT! No more ants.

Mexican Souvenirs For Coworkers

My husband and I are going on a well deserved vacation to Mexico (Playa del Carmen, south of Cancun) to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary. We had a three day driving honeymoon due to finances and always planned to make up for it when we were able. We are staying at an all-inclusive resort and all that part is paid for. We know that we will need money for tipping, for day trips and for souvenir shopping. This brings me to my request.

My husband works with a large group of people and is in the process of transferring from one department to another. He knows all the people in both departments pretty well and has received a number of little gifts when co-workers have come back from vacations from Mexico, Hawaii, etc. Nothing big, just a token. Because he has only been working there for less than a year, he is still trying to make a good impression. Well, we counted it up and there are about 35 people who we need to get a token gift for. That isn't even including gifts for our friends and family.

Does anyone have any advice for small, thoughtful but cheap travel souvenirs? If anyone has been to this area or has any tips to help us, I would appreciate it. We are just trying to figure out how much money to bring. I know that if we bring too much, we will probably spend it all, and if we bring too little, cash advances can be very expensive.

Thanks so much, I wish I could take all of you with us!

Jess

Update: Well, it appears that Hurricane Dean might make this trip a little more interesting. We are planning to arrive about a week after he passes directly through, assuming our beach side hotel is still standing. Think good thought for us, and all the people in the Caribbean, for whom this is more than a change in plans.

Advice For Pruning Forsythia Hedge

I am pruning a rather large forsythia hedge that has gotten out of control. Can I use Round Up to kill the new shoots coming up out of the ground that are spreading too much or is there something else I can use. I do not want to kill the main hedge, just keep it in check. Also, when is the latest I can trim the hedge so it will still flower next spring.

Freezing Baby Food In Ice Cube Trays

My son is just now starting to eat baby food. I am making my own but unsure how I should freeze it. I have been placing it in freezer bags but have noticed that other mothers have mentioned they put them in ice cube trays. Do you keep them in the ice cube trays or once it is frozen do you place it in bags. If any other advice can be given I would love to hear it.

Is 2007 a Bad Year For Roaches?

Is anyone else having a problem with bugs in the house this summer? We have a pest control service that sprays, but we are having an over abundance of wood roaches and for the first time I've been seeing (horrors of horrors!) cock roaches! I've had the pest control company come back out to spray, but the bugs keep on coming. Does anyone know what I can do about it? We are freaked out, to say the least!

Looking For Brown Leather Footstool From Bed Bath & Beyond

I am looking for an item that Bed, Bath and Beyond carried. If anyone finds one at their local BBB please let me know.

It is a "brown leather" footstool with storage in it. It sells for $19.99. It was in with the "back to school" stuff. Of course, I didn't purchase it when I saw it, now I need one! The BB&B here, claims they cannot get them again. I KNOW some of you can help, with the 20% coupon I have it should only be $15.00. Thanks for your help.
