Use a Recycled Box to Store Notepaper

A Muellers' Spaghetti box works great for holding the supply of note paper I have cut from paper received in the mail. It is attached to the side of the refrigerator by flat magnets glued to the back of the box making the paper so accessible for making my grocery list, etc.. Eventually I may cover this container with contact paper but right now I like the box as is.

To remember items I need when I go to town, I keep a running list clipped to the front of the refrigerator.

Tony (Tabby)

Tony is 4 years old and a Tabby. Tony was a gift for my youngest son's birthday. His mother had abandoned him and his siblings.

Tony is quite possibly the laziest cat known to man (from what I've seen at least!) Anyone else ever heard of a cat that begs for bread and crackers? He also likes to stare intently at you and play dead, see pictures for proof.

I live in a house with 2 boys, my husband, and Tony and he is the only male that I couldn't live without! Just kidding guys!

Craft Project: Heart-Faced Christmas Ornament

This adorable doll-faced, heart, Christmas tree ornament is easy to make and a great gift for kids. It only requires some paint, ribbon, glue and a cheap wooden heart. Well maybe a pencil and some doll hair too, but that's it!

Approximate Time: 20 minutes

Supplies:

  • Wooden Heart - 3 inch tall, 1/4 inch thick
  • Peach Acrylic Paint
  • Red Acrylic Paint
  • White Acrylic Paint
  • Black Acrylic Paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Curly Doll Hair - 8 inches long, two small sections
  • Green Ribbon - 1/4 inch thick, 1 foot long
  • Red Ribbon - 1/4 inch thick, 1 and 1/2 feet long
  • Hot Glue and Glue Gun
  • Pencil

Instructions:

HeartDoll1_200x200.jpg Paint the heart peach and let dry. Use a pencil to lightly sketch the face from "Picture 1" onto the heart. Paint the nose and cheeks pinks, the lips red and the eyes white. Let dry.

Go over the face and outline the shapes with black paint. If you have a hard time doing detail, you can cheat and outline the shapes with a black, sharpie pen. Let dry.

HeartDoll2_150x60.jpgMake two small sections of hair. Take one section and pinch the hair together, about one inch from the end. Use a green ribbon or chenille stem to make a "ponytail", as shown in "Pic 2".

Tie or buy a tiny red bow. I included extra red ribbon in the instructions in case you want to tie your own, since it wastes length when you have to cut the ends even. Glue or hot glue the red bow to the green ponytail holder. Repeat process with second section of hair. Let dry.

Make a small line of hot glue on the thin upper edge of the heart, on the upper curve of the heart top. Press a ponytail of hair into the hot glue and hold for a second. You want to glue not only the inch of hair to the heart, but the stable ponytail holder too. Repeat with second ponytail. Let dry.

Use about 1/2 foot of red ribbon to tie into a large loop. Use hot glue to glue the ribbon to the top of the heart. Let dry. You now have a cute, doll-face Christmas tree ornament!

Notes:

I made the back of the heart look the same as the front, so regardless of which side you look at, you see the face. However, you can also paint the back of the heart the same color as the hair and make it look like the back of the head. If you do want to make the back of the heart look like the back of a head, remember that it now gives you a perfect place to write a little message and sign your work.

Craft: Knifty Knitter Purse for a Little Girl

I was practicing some stitches while learning to crochet. I had a little crocheted piece about 5 inches wide and 12 inches long in a pale yellow. I just had thrown it aside. I got to looking at it today and decided to fold it in half longwise and stitch up long sides in matching yarn. I then used Knifty Knitter spool loom small side to make a handle around 14 inches long.

I used the Knifty Knitter flower loom to make pink and blue flowers and used yellow yarn to put handles on and the flowers at the base of the handles. I am filling it with small toys or candy and sending to my 4 year old niece for Christmas. I already had the yarn and the Knifty Knitter loom so the craft cost me nothing.

Craft Project: Christmas Kissing Ball

This is a holiday decoration that not only adds delight to your Christmas spirit but also incorporates some Christmas tradition. While it takes time to complete, it is fairly simple and fun to make. It looks nice and festive hanging from your archway or door jamb. We made them for our church bazaar and they sold quickly.

Approximate Time: About an hour.

Supplies:

  • 4 inch Styrofoam ball
  • 1/2 yard small print cotton or cotton blend Christmas fabric (can use scraps)
  • one 8 to 10 inch piece of 1/4 wide ribbon
  • approx. 1 1/2 yards of velvet or other ribbon
  • two 5 inch pieces of 18G or lighter floral tie wire
  • sprig of faux mistletoe
  • scissors
  • pinking shears
  • low temp. glue gun
  • approx 5 glue sticks
  • blunt awl or other blunt tool for poking
  • faux red berries or small jingle bells

Instructions:

Cut the 1/2 yard of Christmas fabric in 4x4 inch squares with the pinking shears. Cotton or cotton blends work best. Limp or heavy fabric won't cut well. I used about 50 to 60 squares. You can mix and match Christmas fabrics or use all one pattern. Fold the 1/4 inch ribbon in half and holding raw ends together poke into the top of the styro ball. Secure with a dab of hot glue and let dry. This will be your hanger for the kissing ball. Find the exact opposite of the ribbon hanger and insert the sprig mistletoe. It usually comes already on a pick. You can secure that with a little hot glue too.

Now, continue poking holes one at a time in the styro ball and fill each hole with a little hot glue then center one of the squares over the pre-made hole and poke it in about 1/4 of an inch. The fabric square will pucker up and look perky. Do this all over the styro ball (I started at the top and worked down the ball then alternated the next rows).

When all squares are inserted to your satisfaction you can decorate the ball with the red berries. Mine were already on wires so they were easy to insert. If you use the small jingle bells they can be hot glued directly among the fabric squares. When your ball is complete make a nice full bow using the tie wire to hold it. Attach the bow at the top where the ribbon hanger is. Then make a full but smaller bow for the bottom and insert it by the mistletoe.

Craft Project: Crocheted Snowflake

Another of the original 9 or so I am submitting this week. Again, I used a sisle type yarn for a country effect. You can use a thread crochet pattern and it will come out bigger, but that will be the only difference.

My pattern was just the first 3 rows of a nice little doily I found.
My motto is Keep It Simple Sandi!!

This yarn was thick, but if you want a nice bigger size, you can use a double strand with a size "N" hook.

Chain 6 and join for a circle. Chain 8 (more if you want it bigger), and join in the same circle. Make another four of those.

To make sure your last "loop" is at the top, chain 4 and make a treble crochet (2 times around the hook instead of once for a double), and your loops top will be on top instead of at the bottom with the others.

Chain 4, join the top of the first loop, chain 3 and hook in that same loop, chain 3 again and hook in that loop again. Chain 4 and keep going till you have a "tricot" on the top of each of the 6 loops.
Cut and fasten.

I cool glued rafia bows I had made ahead of time with a button on the bow's center.

You can decorate as you like.

Contests:

These contests are weekly. We pick 2 tip winners and 1 photo winner at the end of each week. Each winner will win $25!

Today's Tips:

Give a Little Getaway Instead of a Gift for Christmas

Wanting to make every dollar count this year at Christmastime and with 6 grown kids, 3 with spouses I decided to approach gift giving a little differently. We used our Air Miles to purchase each one of the couples a $50.00 gift certificate for a dinner out, movie ticket packages that include drinks and popcorn. We will also include a sum of cash to cover taxi, tips or whatever they may want.

I then went to a local bargain store and purchased metal indoor rustic planters and began to fill them with items I got by using my Shoppers Drug Mart Optimum points and coupons. I bought things like, body washes for each gender, Toblerone chocolate, fancy candles, his and her towels, bath fizz, box of Triscuits, little package of liqueur chocolates. I then bought each one a red cloth Christmas tablecloth to set the planter in and pull up around and tie with a ribbon. I also bought a small Christmas hand towel and wrapped a package of vintage cheese as a go along but that will be kept in the fridge until Christmas instead of under the tree.

This will either provide a much needed getaway for the parents or a family outing, which ever they want. This certainly turned out to be a very frugal but fun gift for our kids. No worries about it being the right size, colour or style this year ...

Hurray! I also found it so much fun finding and creating these it replaced all the stress I usually feel with excitement.

Merry Christmas one and all.

Reuse Styrofoam Trays for Crafts

My whole family loves to paint and do crafts. Someone's always making something. To help keep messes to a minimum, I save all the foam trays from the meats we buy. They're great for everything from glitter to paint to glue to sorting beads to pretty much anything else you can think of.

I even have other family members saving theirs for me.

Preparing to String Christmas Lights

When putting up Christmas lights inside or out I save myself a lot of grief by doing the following things. First, stock up on bulbs and fuses in advance to save making an extra trip out to buy them. Untangle each string. Plug one at a time in and replace bulbs.

If strand of lights is not working at all, it is probably the fuses. Unplug the lights from the socket. Use a dull bread and butter knife or a coin and slide the cover off the plug, being careful to always slide away from you. Dispose of the dead fuses properly according to the recycling in your area. Slip the fuses in and close the cover. Try again. If both of these helpers still leave you with a dead sting of lights it is better to replace it with a new one than risk a fire. Happy Holidays!

Trinket Bowl from a Vinyl Record

Another thrifty present for Christmas is to take some old vinyl albums or records large or small and make them into trinket bowls. Place the vinyl on top of a smaller glass bowl and put in the oven for about 5 minutes till the vinyl starts to droop into the bowl. It's easier if you put a heavy tin of something on top but if you do be sure to open the tin a bit so it doesn't burst under pressure. As the vinyl droops into the glass bowl because the glass bowl is smaller, the vinyl will also flute all round the edges in folds which are very pretty. Then take out the oven and let it cool and you have a nice trinket bowl which can be filled with sweets. It makes a groovy present for a teenager as retro is fashionable and it's also recycling old stuff.

Feed Pumpkin To Your Dogs

Have any leftover canned pumpkin or maybe even fresh pumpkin that didn't get used up in pies? Try giving some to your dog.

On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, I was making pumpkin cheesecake and I had a lot of leftover pumpkin. I was planning on making muffins or something with it after the holiday. Well, our dog Honey started making a nuisance of herself in the kitchen, wanting some. A quick check on the internet verified that pumpkin was safe for dogs, even recommended as an ingredient in many homemade dog foods. So we gave her a scoop and she polished the bowl clean! I have been giving her a little bit as a treat now and again as I had 4 pie pumpkins so quite a bit of pumpkin to eat our way through

Be sure to only feed them pure pumpkin, not any type of filling with spices and sugar. It is packed with fiber and vitamins and she acts like I opened a can of wet dog food so everyone is happy.

Create A Tree with Your Children

With the economy like it is these days, it may be difficult to afford the holiday tree this season. Here is a simple solution. While kids are so young they will not always remember the decorative Christmas tree with presents underneath. Bottom line, trees are expensive!! Real OR fake. Instead of a tree that may shed, cause allergies, or one that you have to pay $300 for, why don't you make your own? This is a money AND space saver.

All you have to do, is find some wall space, get a nice sized roll of paper, (however big you want the tree to be) and paint, color or draw a tree! Have the kids participate. It is a fun project for everyone and you also get a chance to bond with your child(ren). Be creative with it. The possibilities are limitless! For instance you can use glitter for garland, put up baby pictures as ornaments, use it as a height/weight cart, stickers, doilies, etc. You get the idea!! On that special day you can even put your gifts underneath.

This is a Christmas idea that involves the whole family and is something that you can pack away and keep forever as memorabilia. The paper tree is something that kids look forward to every year and can be carried on for generations. So, if you're like me and many other Americans, then why don't save some money for your kids this year and put up a paper tree. God bless and have a Merry Christmas!

Ask Butcher To Make Sale Roasts Into Ground Beef

Every few weeks the different grocery markets have London broil and top round roasts on sale for $1.79-$1.99 per pound. What I do is go to the butcher at the market and tell him/her that I want 10 or 15 or 20 pounds of the roasts made into ground meat. I do this all of the time. Sometimes you will see in the AD that the roast will be sold as roast only. Then you can't do it. However, if that isn't mentioned go ahead and have them grind to your heart's content. You will save a lot of money.

Make Your Own Stretchy Pony Tail Holder

I made a discovery a few days ago after paying 4 bucks plus shipping for a pair of ladybug pony tail holders. They were made with novelty buttons with a shank. They had a Goody stretch pony tail holder. I bought some novelty buttons and stretch rings and made some by pulling the ring though the shank with a piece of thread. You can then loop it back through itself like you would with a latch hook. Adjust the tautness of it just by pulling and wiggling it around. Now she has butterflies, daisies and high top tennis shoes.

Remember how we use to all love the different kinds of candy and wish we still could. Well you might want to check this site out. When it opens just click on "THE CANDY STORE". Helping Your Adult Children Buy Real Estate

My husband wishes to get our 4 kids a start with equity. The oldest kid is close to buying a house, though one isn't picked out yet. He's thinking about a duplex to help pay the mortgage. My husband want to help buy 1/2 of it, breaking that 1/2 of it up into the 5 shares that represent the rest of the family. There are so many different situations that I can think of that could complicate this set up.

Two kids are starting a business together, but there is a stronger feeling of them going in their own directions, who knows? I need to see a better/simpler concrete plan to go about this. It will probably hurt our retirement, whatever. How would you set this up?

Buying Presents for Grown Children

I live in a small rural town where pay is low and times are tough right now. I know how much we usually spent on our son for Christmas, but have often thought that we went overboard. He's never had grandparents, aunts, uncles, or cousins to buy him any gifts, so all he got was from us. He was by no means spoiled, and often waited for Christmas to get new things like clothes.

He's now grown and married, and I wonder what the appropriate amount to spend on him and his wife would be. I don't want to seem cheap, but we're on a very strict budget. Both he and his wife are still in school, live over 1000 miles from us, and are not able to come home very often. They really appreciate money since they have a tight budget also (and it saves on shipping), but what amount is appropriate and acceptable?

I understand the top has no limit, but our budget does. Would anyone be so kind to give an upper and lower limit that they've set when buying a gift for a grown child? For holiday, birthday, or whatever?
