A hint or suggestion is to set a time for leaving with the understanding that if someone is not on time the rest will go without them so that everyone isn't late because of one. If you wait the wait will get longer and longer.

My particiular instance of carpooling didn't work very well, as I sometimes had to work late and/or had an appointment after work; therefore, I had to stop it.
