Scenery: Puerto Rico Shoreline

After leaving the hospital where I work, I needed to relax because of the stress I felt. I drove to the shore which is on the way home and this is the beauty that awaited me. God bless America

Roses Fed with Epsom Salts

This is the view from my kitchen table. Once a month, starting when I notice new growth, I water my roses with 2 TBSP. Epsom Salts to 3 gallons of water. Aren't they beautiful?

Garden with Race Track Straw

We mulch our garden completely with straw that we get from the racetrack in town in the spring when the races are on and the horses are here. This straw is bedding from the horse stalls, so includes natural fertilize (horse manure). It also holds moisture during our hot dry months, and keeps down the weeds. When the garden season is over, we till the straw in and that helps to build the soil. I am including two pictures. One is of the garden the day we planted, in April, and the other is the garden now, in Mid June. The addition to the front in the pictures is an asparagus bed that we just put in this year. We picked our first tomatoes from the garden yesterday.

Guss (Poodle Mix)

Guss is 10 months old and is poodle and I don't know what else. I took him when he was about 8 days old. I take in all animals who are in need of help.

He loves to play with his quack duck he knows how to push the button to make his duck quack. He also likes to play "out smart mom".

They said he was going to die but with lots of love and care, and him having a strong will to live, he is a lively and very happy, tiny guy.

Wire Coat Hangers for Welding Rods

A pal came through for some items I was giving away. One item he was overly joyed with was a stack of wire coat hangers. I inquired if his closets needed some. He said "no, they make really nice, inexpensive welding rods."

Source: Since I didn't know this, maybe it's news to someone who welds.

Soda Bottles for Cuttings

When I send out cuttings to friends, of plants that propagate easily, I take a 2 liter cola plastic bottle and cut around the top to make a planter. I drill little holes in the bottom for drainage, tear the wrapper off, and decorate it with permanent markers. It makes a great planter, and the root system can be seen easily when it is ready to replant. I use root stimulator to start the plants, and water, then watch them grow. Wrap cellophane or foil paper around the bottom and tie it with a ribbon, for decoration and to catch the drainage.

Use Lip Balm for Very Dry Feet

I have very dry skin on the soles of my feet and nothing did the trick. I tried slathering a thin layer of my lip balm - Smith's Rosebud Salve on them and have been using it ever since. It's only 5 bucks per tin and works much better than the expensive foot creams I have tried.

Source: Discovered it on my own after noticing that the tin suggested use for chapped skin as well as lips.

Using Buckets Under Downspouts

My husband never got around to setting up a rain barrel system under our downspout, so I decided to take matters into my own hands. I set out several 5-gal. pails, a large plastic garbage can, and even my wheelbarrow along the ground, in a line, directly under the garage roof edge. After a good rain, I was surprised to find all of them filled to the brim. Now I leave them there and continually have enough to water my plants!

Thin Rubber Gloves for Weeding

When potting plants, I use the thin type rubber gloves that you can buy in a box and toss when finished. Works great for weeding too because you can "feel" what you are doing much better. I am not as inclined to pull something other than a weed if I have them on.

Product Review: Foldtuck Bakeware

I feel sometimes like I clean my kitchen and an hour later, it's upside down again! I got so frustrated that I did something very unlike me - I bought something from an infomercial - lol! It's called a Foldtuk container, (www.foldtuk.com).

I mean it does a lot of neat stuff, but what appealed to me the most is that it collapses really thin. It saved me a lot of room in my kitchen and has really made me feel more organized in general. I hope that is a helpful suggestion to add to the forum!

Use Leftover Coleslaw For Second Meal

My family loves coleslaw and salads and I make them often BUT not with mayo or salad cream. I dress them with a little oil and vinegar and then serve them up. If they prefer, they can can mayo or salad cream to their portion on their plates. Whatever is left in the serving bowl, whether it is coleslaw or salad, is stir fried with a little soy sauce and whatever leftover meat I happen to have, like chopped ham, bits of bacon, any leftover (cooked) chicken or beef. Sometimes I fry a sliced onion before I put in the coleslaw or salad for extra flavour. Serve it over noodles, leftover pasta or rice. Add a dash of tabasco to spice it up, if you wish. Nothing is wasted and my family enjoys another meal the next day for LITERALLY pennies! I know it sounds odd, but it is delicious.

Use Your Microwave For Warm Brownie Desserts

I was reading something the other day about taking a personal size microwavable dish, pouring in a bit of a brownie or cake mix, adding a tiny bit of water and a dab of caramel ice cream topping, microwave for a few short seconds (or to your liking as to how done you want it) for your own version of Betty Crocker Warm Delights. They said the possibilities of different varieties someone could come up with on flavors were endless!!

I've been doing something similar to this for years using brownie mix, pour into a bowl, add about 1/2 cup applesauce, some water and nuke in the microwave till my preference of consistency. Can eat straight from the dish or pour over ice cream.

Happy Microwaving!!

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

When we put our house up for sale, I stressed emphatically that my sons make their beds each morning.

I left for work before they left for school and I wanted to be sure the house looked presentable when the agent showed it to prospective buyers.

I was surprised and impressed that my 15-year-old son's bed was perfectly made each day. Until, that is, one night when I went into his room, I discovered his secret.

He was fast asleep on the floor in his sleeping bag.

LG Bottom Freezer Lights Won't Turn Off

I have an LG Bottom Freezer. The inside lights are staying on and melting. Has anyone had this problem resolved and why hasn't there been a recall. Our lights stayed on all night even though the doors were closed. The heat melted the control panel cover and the light sockets. All the food was ruined and a severe fire hazard in now posed. We bought this less than 2 yrs. ago and spent $1500!

Using Collectible Beer Mugs For Anniversary Centerpieces

I am helping with a friend's parents' 50th wedding anniversary decor. I am using beer mugs that they have collected over the years that are significant to their travels or conferences for the service group they belong too. I have a budget for flowers etc but I have a lot of tables. The only thing I can find is to fill the mug with gold stones and top it up with mini carnations.

This would be o.k. for the ends of the table but how do I incorporate it into an elegant centerpiece? Carnations are the flowers they had at their wedding. Any other ideas? I don't want this to look like a beer hall as neither of them drink beer! Many thanks.

Can I Eat My Navy Beans?

My 3 year old was playing with a bag of store bought navy beans in her sandbox. Now I have a full grown bean garden. The pods are full grown, but still green. I was wondering if the pods were edible or if I need to just use the beans when the pods are dry. I live in an apartment with a fenced-in patio instead of a yard. I was not planning on having plants, but now I do and I have no idea what to do with my accidental garden.

Options For Temperamental Dog

My dog is a Chi/terrier mix. When he is sweet and nice he is a wonderful dog. Very loving and affectionate. The problem is I have 2 boys and their friends that come over. He seems to be a very moody dog. He growls and nips (has not really bit the children yet). We went away last week and we left him home with my husband and he growled and tried to bite him.

The dog is healthy, I took him to vet. They just told me it is his personality. I am afraid he is going to bite someone other than my kids. What should I do? He would be great with a person with no kids. Someone that could spoil him and give him his space. Help, I love my dog but am afraid of what he might do. My husband is under the assumption once you get an animal they are yours till they die. He is also afraid of the dog since he snapped at him the other day.

Choosing Paint Color To Coordinate With Terra Cotta Tile

My husband and I are repainting our bathroom and we are having a very difficult time choosing a color. We have terracotta tile on the floor, around the jacuzzi and on the floor in the shower. We have white wainscoting around the lower half of the wall. We cannot find a color that looks good with our scheme.

We have tried Colorado Clay and Navajo White and were unhappy with both. We have a dark walnut double sink and are looking for a deep rich color to complement everything. We do not want greens or reds though, we are looking for somewhat of a warm, neutral color (even a color in the terracotta family that is not too orange). Please help!

Squash Rotting On The Vine

I have a squash and zucchini problem. Both seem to be dying on the vine. I saw a post about the zucchini and was wondering if you think it's a pollination problem. The squash seem to get about 6 inches long, then start to wilt and whither, until they're dead and brown. The zucchini did the same thing. I can at least harvest the baby zucchini, but the squash are lost.

Should I try "paint brushing" them? It looked like the zucchini almost had a spot that could have been from a pest, but it was rotten enough that I couldn't tell for sure. This photo is of the squash, there's a dead one, sorry it's a little distant. Thanks for your help!
