I made these piggy banks out of empty mayonnaise jars. I painted the lid and ears (heavy card stock), painted and hot glued dowel rods for the feet, and hot glued on a tail made from a pipe cleaner. I cut out the opening in the top with a knife and hot glued around the sharp edges. My kids just love their piggy banks.

Today's Tips
Want to keep all your drains smelling fresh and running clean? Once a week pour 1/2 cup of baking soda in each drain then add 1 to 1 1/2 cup white vinegar. Let it bubble for 10 - 15 minutes then flush the drains with very hot water.

Buying on Sale and Preparing Hamburger Meat
When I can ad match hamburger for around $1.38 I buy the 5 lb containers, then bring it home and cook one package at a time in my crock pot on high for about 5-6 hours, while I'm doing other things around the house.
Then after the meat is done I run it through my food processor with the grinding blade to make it like Taco Bell meat. I freeze it in 2 cup pacakages and it hurries up those nights of spaghetti, tacos, sloppy joes etc. I usually do a package a day for a few days in a row and that'll keep us stocked till the next sale.

Laundry Soap Caps for Bath Tub Toys
Extra laundry soap measuring cups make great bath tub toys. So do the plastic lids off of bottles of things like Wisk. When they get gunky throw them out.

New Years Decorations for Graduation Parties
Do you have a child graduating in 2006? A clever money-saving party tip is to buy leftover New Year's decorations. I've seen New Year's eyeglasses (2006-eye holes in the 0's), year confetti, cups & napkins. As long as it only has the year printed it would work for a graduation party, too. Plus, they will be really cheap come January 2nd and your grad won't know the difference.

Recycling everything you can always saves some money, and also your time and energy. When my rubber spatulas get old and are no longer flexible, they go in a jar by the sink. Great to scrap plates, but even better for non-stick frying pans or pans that can easily scratch. They last a really long time and can be trimmed with scissors to any shape, helping get into the yucky sticky corners.

How do you make a surface patina?
How do you patina? Is there a 'frugal' way to make a surface look like it has been oxidized (out in the elements for several years) 'without' purchasing a product from a store?

What is the best way to store coffee (both for unground beans and for already ground)? My DH and I don't drink it up very fast, and I've heard keep it in the freezer; I've heard keep it in the refrigerator; I've heard oh, no, don't do either of those, that'll dry it out, just keep it in an airtight container.

I have a 7 year old Boston Terrier, for the past two months her spine has been sticking up and so are her hip bones. Today she looked a little bloated. She is somewhat active and eats her meals fine. Does anyone have any idea on what her problem could be? My vet said that it is normal but I don't think it is, he also said you have to remember that she's a senior now. Pleas help. Thanks

We have just moved to a new home and English Ivy has covered the ground and trees like kudzu. I am in the process of cutting it from the trees near the ground and am wondering how to kill it. I am thinking that I need to cut it low with a lawn mower and then spray it. I have some Weed Defeat by Zep but don't know if it is strong enough. Will Brush Roundup be better? How about Brush Be Gone? What time of year should I spray?

When Should I start Training My Puppy?
I just adopted a 5 week old staffshire terrier. We are unsure if we should begin training her yet. She seems to be taking to house breaking as far as paper training. Although she is very nippy I discovered leaving the room after she gets a hold of me works rather well. Any advice would help.
She loves to cuddle, sleep and play which is normal and she appears to be in good health. She was left outside of someone's house, luckily that person worked at a shelter. We are going to the vet tomorrow to make sure everything is in working order. I'll let you know how works out.

Discoloration on the Sides of a Fiberglass Bathtub
When I built my home 15 years ago I thought I would save myself a lot of cleaning by installing a one-piece, white fiberglass surround bathtub and shower combination. But now there is a discoloration around the sides about 4 inches above the floor of the tub. It makes my bathtub always look like it has a scummy "bathtub ring" around it and I rarely even bathe. I usually take showers and when I bathe I fill the tub completely full. I hate the way it looks. I have tried removing it with bleach, soft scrub and 409. The "ring" is still there. Anyone else have this problem and have you found a solution?

I have snakes in my basement. I am deathly afraid of snakes. I know they are just gardner snakes, but now they have babies. I want to get rid of them, not just repel them, but kill them. I have put down the sticky traps with no results. Do moth balls kill them? Does gravel kill them? Does bleach kill them? I am not able to get around much, I have a heart condition and don't want to end up passed out on the floor in the basement with those creepy crawlers. Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Miss Liddle from Jamestown North Dakota

Does anyone have an idea on how to stop mice from entering an older house? We put steel wool around the places where the pipes come in. They are also in the attic and can hear them gnawing away at night.
