Silverware Wind Chimes
By Shauna Smith Duty

When those darling little birds peck gaping wounds in your tomatoes, consider adding wind chimes to your garden décor. A creative and fun alternative to store bought chimes is a homemade creation that will become a conversation piece. Using old silverware and some string, you can make a set of loud wind chimes that are whimsical and practical. And what better location for silverware wind chimes than in the garden, where your food originates?

Nasturtiums

To make your garden green and flowery with colours of deep red or maroon or cream. Buy seeds of all varieties of nasturtium and plant them in combination in a 30" basket. Hanging basket...

Put 6 seeds per basket and then see the results in summer. In the picture is one of the flowers. This is the first bloom of this summer in my basket.

Today's Tips

Saving the Scraps

I do not throw out scraps from gifts, packaging, etc. I save them in a craft bin for the kids to used the recycled matter to make things. I serves a dual purpose. I help save waste and money by recycling and reusing.

Mouse Traps for the Garden

We use mousetraps to keep squirrels, rabbits and cats from ruining our garden. The noise scares them without hurting them so that they don't return.

Tire Expiration Dates

Tires expire! Check the date on your tires before you buy. Old tires fall apart causing rollovers and death. Make sure your new tires are still within their expiration date. Our lives are at stake.

I used to buy old tires but since I have seen the sad facts, old tires do cause wrecks. I no longer buy old tires for my vehicles. The risk is too great for me.

Getting the Most Out of Garlic

To get the full flavor of garlic without wasting the oils, when chopped or crushed, is to put the peeled, whole clove, into your sauces, and let simmer until soft (about 1/2 hour). Then mash the clove of garlic with a fork on the edge of the pot. Stir and continue to simmer. This tip was handed down from my Great Aunt.

Keep Gloves Handy in the Garden

I often pass by my garden, and have found that I consistently pull little weeds out from the soil. Then I have to spend a few minutes trying to get the dirt out from under my fingernails. Now I leave an extra old pair of gardening gloves outside, right by the garden.

Keeping Table Top Water Fountains Cleaning

I have a table top water fountain which I love. To keep it clean, and the water fresh, I add some vinegar every time I add more water to it. My cats also love to drink from this, so it also benefits the cats, since vinegar helps to cut down on the flea problem as well!

Starting a Garden with Cuttings from Friends and Family

A nice thing about gardening is getting plant clippings from friends and relatives. Especially plants that bloom year after year and even long after some family members are no longer living, you'll still have something to remember them by.

Frisbee as a Mulch Spreader

On a fluke, I picked up a frisbee in the yard and used it to distribute mulch from the bag and haven't used anything since. It gives enough leverage to spread the right amount around each plant and sure beats trying to pick the bag up and control the amount you pour out.

Save Money on Clothing

  • Wear older clothing around the house and save your nice clothing for when you go out.
  • Buy clothes off season when they are on sale or even clearance.
  • Stock up on items when they are on clearance.
  • Buy clothing that can be worn in more than one season.
  • Shop at discount stores and outlet stores if you have some in your area.
  • Sell clothing that you no longer use at a consignment store or garage sale.
  • Buy clothing that can be used in more than one outfit.
  • Change out of your good clothes as soon as possible after getting home. Hang them up so they can be worn again.
  • Treat stains quickly so they don't set and ruin your clothing.

What are your tips for saving money on clothing?

Day Vacations - Have Fun and Save Money

Mini vacations are fun and can save you money. This means you plan a special day which brings you back to your home at night to save on the hotel rate.

I announced to my husband 1 week in advance that I was going to kidnap him for a special day. I asked him to be home from work by noon on Friday (weekend is fine too but more crowded. I am a teacher so can take advantage of off times.) I had a nice lunch prepared before we left, cooler with drinks and goodies to go, and all we needed for the day. It was interesting that for 3 days he was telling co-workers that he was being taken away for the day. The kids helped plan the day.

So where did we go? We live 30 min. from the Atlantic ocean. $3. for the park entrance fee and then stopped at a local restaurant for seafood on the way home. It would have been cheaper to come home for dinner or have it packed in the cooler but my husband loves eating out and I rarely let him go to restaurants.

Because we eat out so infrequently, this was special yet the cost of the day was cheaper than a hotel for the night.

I was amazed that the kids and my husband thanked me for a great day. Next week we plan another day; half the fun is anticipation of the surprise. Be creative and take advantage of almost free events, packing your own food, and your creativity.

Stains From Public Washing Machine

I did a load of laundry last night (in the public machine in my buiding), and my clothes came out with a lot of nasty black stains. These stains smelled exactly like fuel oil. I rubbed in tide and washed them again (this time in a public machine), it didn't phase them.

Long story short I took them to the dry cleaner, and they just returned them without any improvement. Does any one have a suggestions, or are they a write off after a wash and drycleaning cycle?

Painting Sneakers

Can sneakers be painted and still be worn, and if so, what type of paint? The mules I love, one yellow and one white pair have uppers which are made from a heavy fabric. I'm rough on them with all the gardening I do. I'm sorry I did not keep them for good. I have foot problems and these are perfect for me. I've washed them by hand and by machine and I still cannot get them clean enough to wear out. So I figure there might be some kind of paint one can use on heavy fabric. Any suggestions at all will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

70th Birthday Party in Las Vegas

I need some ideas for a 70th Birthday Party. The birthday girl is my mother-in-law, who wanted the family to gather in Las Vegas (her favorite city on the face of the earth) to celebrate. Accomodations have been arranged for the attendees, but what will we do when we get there other than gather for a birthday dinner? She does not want any gifts...

I thought of presenting a souvenir journal with photographs and words of encouragement from family members, but no one has cooperated so far. Any other ideas out there? I'd really appreciate your help.
