Preschooler Activity Tub

Do you have a toddler or pre-schooler who likes to participate in small activities during the day? Organize them!

My toddler tends to get into the play dough and leave it out, or he finds crayons and colors on things he shouldn't. Now, I have all those items organized in a tub I keep on the fridge. That way he can't get into them, but they are ready to go when he asks for them.

When he wants to color or otherwise create, I simply pull down the tub of supplies! Mine has crayons, bubbles, play dough, chalk, a small chalkboard, a puzzle, and cookie cutters.

Nesting Containers For More Storage Space

If you are like me and have limited space AND keep plastic containers, I found a great solution. Keeping in mind the Nesting Dolls, I found that with a little planning, I can keep smaller ones inside bigger ones inside bigger ones!

This is a spice container (upside down so you can see the lid), inside a peanut butter jar inside a mayo jar. As long as the smaller one goes through the other loose enough to get out easily, then you are good to go!

I do the same thing with plastic containers to save room, too. Little rubbermaid inside larger tupperware inside larger sterilite and so on.

Hope this helps!

Chloe (Tortie Cat)

Chloe is a year old and a Tortie cat. I rescued Chloe after a friend found her dumped out. I got her back in May, 2008. Chloe loves the outdoors, but also loves to get mommy loving. Probably her favorite thing though is to eat. Cat food and people food.

This picture of Chloe is in my step son's booster seat when he was not with us one night. She just made herself comfy as she always does. I often find her in his bedroom sleeping on his bed when he is not with us too. She is such a wonderful kitty and I love her sooooo much.

Today's Tips:

Tackle Box or Divided Plastic Craft Box for Earrings

I was always having trouble finding matching earrings when I had them in a jewelry box. Now I organize my earrings by color in the divided plastic craft/tackle box storage boxes. It makes finding the right earrings to go with a particular outfit a snap! I use smaller divided plastic boxes for tiny earrings. I find I use more of my earrings and waste a lot less time!

Craft: Make a Sit-Up-On

Do you like to go camping but hate sitting on the cold wet ground? How about making a gift for the teachers at an elementary school? Take some old news papers, an old shower curtain, and yarn/ribbon and make a sit-up-on. Cut the curtain into strips that are 18 inches by 30/36 inches. Place folded newspapers (maybe an inch thick) on the curtain and fold the curtain over. Holes in the curtain along the edges and feed the yarn through to close the curtain up.

Using Clorox Clean-Up Spray

I am always in a rush to get out the door for work and worry about not cleaning my bathrooms regularly. Never fear. I've found an answer. I use Clorox Clean-Up. I spray the sinks, shower and commode before I leave out and when I get home home they are sparkling white. I love this stuff!

Donate School Clothes to the Schools

With school starting I wondered if there were children in need of clothing, especially middle and high school age. A lot of kids this age would be too proud to ask for help, and embarrassed not to have new clothes. Guidance counselors at schools usually would know of those in need. Call ahead to check to donate good clean clothing. If the school doesn't mind helping distribute to those in need, the kids can pick out their sizes and keep their dignity.

Thrift Shops, Yard Sales, etc. for Christmas Gifts

With everyday life getting more expensive my family had decided to have a little more fun with Christmas other than just drawing names, spending a set amount on a gift and getting that person what they had asked for. We got really creative and decided that we could only spend $5 on a gift for the person we had drawn. We had so much fun! You really have to get creative. Shop at yard sales, thrift stores, anywhere you can think of. I drew my sisters name and she collects Ziggy. I found her some unique Ziggy figurines at a antique mall for $3.00 and then I came across a southwestern picture for her living room at a yard sale for $2.00. Both were in awesome condition and she really loved them.

Use Drawer Liner For Gripping Eye Pencil Sharpener

This tip will come in handy for those who still use eye liner pencils. I used to have trouble with the pencil sliding in my fingers when I went to use the hand-held sharpener that came with the eye liner. I solved this problem with a small square of non-skid drawer liner. Now, when I sharpen the pencil, I grab the end of the pencil with the piece of non-skid drawer liner and can twist it to sharpen with ease.

Swiffer Cloths in a Pinch

I love Swiffer type cloths. I found when I ran out one time that you can use cut up rags (esp. flannel!) the same size as one of the duster sheets and attach to the mop the same way. Voila! It works great and you can just throw it in the wash if you want to reuse. You can also lightly spray the cloth or dampen it and wring out to do a little spot cleaning. This is a great way to reuse pillowcases that are very worn, or any old thing. :)

Melting Wax to Cover Jams

To melt paraffin neatly and easily while making jam, secure it in a plastic zipper bag and float it in the pot of hot water that's sterilizing your canning jars. When the wax is melted, open the bag about an inch and pour the hot wax right on top of your homemade jam. A real cool way to deal with hot wax.

Source: My own experience.

By Raymonde from North Bay, Ontario

Editor's Note: Some readers have pointed out that using wax for sealing jars has fallen out of favor for food safety reasons.

Here's a note about this from an extension site: "Don't seal jelly products with paraffin wax. Over time, paraffin wax begins to pull back from the sides of the jar, creating openings where mold and yeast can enter and contaminate the product. Also, paraffin can catch on fire if overheated. If you detect mold growth, throw out the entire contents. Always seal jars of jelly products with a two-piece canning lid."

Use a Can for Filling Freezer Bags

I just made a discovery and have got to share it. I have been wishing for a gadget to hold my Zip Lock Freezer Bag open while I fill it. I thought about the tin can and went to my recycling bin and pulled out a 28 oz. Hunt's Tomato can. I cut the bottom out, washed it good and gave it a try. It works great and makes putting stuff in the bag much easier. It fits perfectly down into the quart size bag and can be used on the gallon size bag also. This can will go in my utility drawer now.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

My mother has a "lead foot," so I was not surprised when a state trooper pulled us over as we were speeding through Georgia.

Hoping to get off with a warning, Mom tried to appear shocked when the trooper walked up to the car.

"I have never been stopped like this before," she said to the officer.

"What do they usually do, ma'am," he asked, "shoot the tires out?"

Removing Glue From Silkscreen Image

My daughter got a smear of glitter glue on the (silkscreen) picture part of her shirt. Unknowingly, I washed it, luckily it hasn't been through the dryer. I am nervous about trying the usual glue removal remedies since I think they may damage the decal. Does anyone have any experience with getting glue off a non fabric part of clothing? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Wood Treatment That Won't Stain Clothing

I have a vinyl-ish plastic coated metal hook on a wooden dowel stick that is probably 40 years old from a desert climate (Phoenix, AZ). The wood had a finish, but it's showing signs of drying up. I'd like to moisturize or oil it, but don't want the emollient to stain cloth as it is used to pull clothing out of the dryer and washer. Any suggestions?

Cleaning a Garage Floor

What is the best way to clean a garage floor and get rid of odors? I just moved into a rental house and the garage floor has a lot of oil spots on it and I think they keep their pets in the garage also. I didn't know if I need to buy some type of special commercial cleaner for the floor or will water and ammonia do the job? How can I remove the odors?
