Storing Lettuce

I found out if I wrap my lettuce in paper towels in a Tupperware type bowl it will last a long time. The paper towels absorb the moisture. I live alone and have kept lettuce for 2 or more weeks.

Free Whopper at Burger King

On the back of a Burger King receipt there is an offer for a free Whopper in exchange for a phone survey. The survey takes minutes. You have to buy a french fry and a soda to get the free whopper. This is available in my part of the country. It's easy to miss it.

Free after rebate...

If you see anything advertised "Free after Rebate" buy it. If you don't want it, use it for gifts or sell it by consignment or on eBay. The risk is any sales tax and a postage stamp. I've made a lot of money on freebies like this.

Track Sales With A Price Book

It's a pretty basic concept: when something you use goes on sale, be sure to stock up enough to last until you expect it to go on sale again. To do this effectively, you need to know not only how often something goes on sale, but also how much of it you will likely use during that time. I keep a price book where I record normal and sale prices (plus sale dates!) for all the items I buy. Also added in is a "frequency of use" column. So, for example, if I know I use 2 widgets a week, and they are commonly on sale every 6 weeks, then I would purchase at least 12 widgets at the sale price.

Cooling Off Period for Credit Card Use

If you have a tendency to use your credit cards impulsively, try this: put them in a watertight zip-lock baggie. Drop this baggie (sealed shut) inside a larger baggie (or another type of container) that is filled with water. Freeze, preferably at the bottom of a large chest freezer. The time and trouble it will take you to dig out the cards and thaw them, should give you a "cooling off" period (no pun intended!) to really think about whether you actually want or need that purchase. By the way: no cheating - the microwave will wreck them!

Label Serving Bowls

I get out all the serving bowls I will need for the feast when I set out the holiday dishes. I drop a note in each bowl or platter to remind me what goes where.

Mini Pumpkin as Candle Holder

Using an apple corer, core a small hole into the top of a mini-pumpkin ( about 2 in deep) and use as a candle holder. Apples work, too!

Mini Pumpkins for Table Decorations

A mini-pumpkin at each place, with a place card against it makes a festive table setting.

Cranberry Buying

Buy cranberries early in the season and put them straight into the freezer. The closer you get to the holidays the more expensive they get. Frozen cranberries can be used just like fresh in all recipes.

Put the Keys with the Leftovers

When packing holiday leftovers to send home with guests, put their car keys in the fridge with the leftovers. They will think you are nuts, but they won't get any farther than the car door without their keys - and the leftovers!

A Cut Above - Find Good Cookie Cutters

Although you may be tempted by cute designs, you may be better off purchasing cookie cutters based on material and sharpness. Heavy-duty metal cutters are more likely to have sharp edges that can cut neatly through cookie dough. Avoid plastic cutters, which often have quite dull edges, as well as flimsy metal ones than can make for sloppy cutouts. Cheap metal cutters also rust easily.

Laughter Therapy

If you're a victim of depression, tension headaches, the common cold, or even a more serious illness, use a treatment some doctors use-a good belly laugh. Experts now recognize that humor is therapeutic, especially when it's positive and shows an appreciation of the paradoxes and absurdities of life. It enhances respiration and lowers carbon dioxide levels in the blood. It's a good exercise and good stress reducer. And it helps you get rid of your problems and pain.

Dishwashing Gloves To The Rescue

Decorating With Nature

It was so nice out yesterday I went out to enjoy the fall colors. I sprang to my feet as if by ORDER and got a roll of wide tape (the kind used when mailing packages.) Then I began searching for leaves to fit the tape.

There are more varieties than I knew around my house! I stuck the leaves and a few flowers from weeds on the tape. When it began to drag the ground I went inside and fixed it to my storm door glass. So when I look out this winter, there is some greenery when everything else is covered with snow!

I felt SO GOOD about it that I went out with more tape and went on a walk around the other side of my house. I put that piece on the kitchen window!

Then, I ran out of that that tape and got the next size, about 3/4th inch wide and went out for more. This time I got only small leaves, off the roses and some that didn't reach their full size yet. Wow!

I will get more tape when I can soon. There are a few nice days left, maybe even a months worth or more!

Last summer, because I really am a plant killer, I went out to a nearby nature reserve (Check your maps, maybe there is something near you that you didn't know about. Mine is only 8 miles of very pretty back roads.) I got a couple of downed limbs. I would never tell someone to go cut limbs but if that is what you can do, go for it!) I painted them black with can of Dollar General spray paint. It is $2 or $2.50 and I had some pots so went to lumber yard for bags of cement ($1.87 for 10 lbs.) I mixed some cement in the pot with a paint stirrer and placed a painted limb in each and let dry.

I have had SO many compliments on my "indoor woods"! I even had one suspended from the ceiling but it fell. It had a chimes hanging on it and a small birdhouse with tiny flower garland I created of deco hole punch and crocheted a chain stich in between each.

I also have a huge red maple leaf fixed to a pane of glass in the front door. I like to think that when I look out through all this that I remain "hidden" until I choose to open the door. I have a curtain too, but this is a lot more fun!

What do you all do with the beautiful items gifted to us by Mother Nature?
