The 888 number shown comes back as "This is not a working number." Just to be on the safe side, I re-registered both land line and cell with the registry. Cay from FL
1. It is not a hoax. 2. If you do what she said call the national do not call # it works. 3. You can do the same on your home phone. I did mine over 4 years ago and an abrupt halt came to telemarketers instantly. If you get one just ask them for their company name and location and they will promptly hang up and not call back.
On the cell phones they were released over 2 years ago and the National do not call registry does regulate them, and I get no more on my cell phone. A lot of times you don't ask the appropriate question on the internet and unless you ask it just right you won't get the right answer. But do not believe me just try it and see for yourself.
I have Verizon & they announced from the beginning they won't be giving anyone's # out. I doubt the government would be that stupid to pass anything allowing them to. Not that they don't do plenty of stupid things.
See the Federal Trade Commisson site: http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2005/04/dnc.htm
One thing is for sure... the telemarketers want to do it. So we need to stay informed and make sure our representatives in congress know that this is not acceptable. Cellphones are expensive enough, I don't want marketers using any of my minutes.
It is and it isn't a hoax. You can get the details here: http://www.snopes.com/politics/business/cell411.asp
Here is what Snopes says:

There have been bills recently which are being considered to allow this. So far, none of them have passed. Probably because the congress folk have cell phones.

We've heard this is a hoax. Telemarketers can't use your cell phone #.
