Daily Thrifty Tips - April 5, 2007

Volume Six, Number 67, April 5, 2007 (Read It Online)

We are finally getting some nice spring weather here in the Pacific Northwest. We are even starting to plan a garage sale. I hope you all are enjoying some nice spring weather.

Here's today's featured request...

Painting Panelling

I am going to paint dark panelling off white. I have the primer and a satin finish top coat, recommended by the paint man instead of a semi gloss. Has anyone used satin finish successfully? Also, should I wash down the panelling with TSP or something else before painting? It's old panelling and I am sure is not squeaky clean right now.

Thanks for your help,
Monica from PA

Tito, Katie, Billy and Bobby (Parakeets)

Tito, is on the top, Katie is hanging on the side, Billy and Bobby (handicapped) inside. They are all Parakeets and are rescue pets. All less than 3 years old. Isn't that sad? Thrown away so young. I got them at different times over the last few years.

Katie likes to fly and tease. Billy and Bobby cannot fly so they enjoy time out of the cage on the play area on top.

PLEASE! If you are looking for a pet, try rescue first! They really appeciate it and usually show it.

Find Basic First Aid Tips Online

Do you know you can get first aid tips through the internet? I swallowed something and then consulted the net and found out that the item was small enough so the doctors couldn't do anything but wait until it passed through me, so it saved me a trip to the emergency room (where they would have told me the same thing for lots of money).

Decorate Shoe Boxes For Storage

Save old shoe boxes and paint them to match your decor. You can have your children paint them with fun designs and notes. Either way, they look great and they are much cheaper compared to store bought boxes and baskets.

Frugal Tips For Prom

I just was in an upscale thrift shop and if I had been looking for a prom dress, there were several long formal gowns there for $20! Remember there are often deals on formal dresses! Some are new from bridesmaids' overstock at Bridal Shops and if the others have been worn, it's hard to tell!

I also ran into a prom site that has lots of ads and links, but also shows you how to do your own up-dos.

Mexican Fiesta Buffet

I had the cheapest dinner party ever. I threw a Mexican Fiesta Buffet. I used my own dishes, didn't buy disposables, borrowed wine glasses for my delightful Sangria. Here is what I bought:

  • 1.5 pounds of ground beef at $1.99 per pound.
  • Cheese (2 packages) on sale for $1.00.
  • Sour Cream (on sale and had coupon) .$59 for Breakstones.
  • Lettuce, Onion and Tomato, (all on sale) $1.50
  • I made homemade guacamole with an Aldi's avacado for $.69.
  • I also had taco shells ($.79 from Aldi's, soft shells $.89 from Aldi's)
  • My biggest expense that was not on sale: tostadas from Meijer at $1.89.
  • I had a few old bottles of wine (free) and added some fruit (also free from mom's fridge).
So for just a few dollars, I had a good night of fun with a few friends. Try having your own ethnic night party with your friends.

Easter Hazards for Pets

Here's a list of Easter items that may be harmful to your pets.

Chocolate: It contains theobromine. The Theobromine in chocolate can cause vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, irregular heartbeat, seizures and, in some cases, death to cats, dogs and other small pets. Make sure easter baskets are inaccessible to pets.

Easter Grass: If eaten, this can cause intestinal blockage. Cat especially love to play with anything like this. Make sure to keep this out of their reach and clean any up that may get on the floor after children open their baskets. Using shredded newspaper may be the safest option.

Easter Lilies: Lilies are poisonous to cats and can be deadly. Some common poisonous plants include: Easter lily, tiger lily, rubrum, Japanese show lily, some species of day lily, and certain other members of the Liliaceous family. If eaten, these can cause kidney failure in cats.

Small Toys: Small toys can be choking hazards and any candy, even if it is not chocolate, is not good for you pets.

Just some words of warning. Have a safe and Happy Easter.

Aromatherapy For The House!

I make my own aromatherapy by using a tea kettle, making sure it is always filled with water. Great for humidity. Add spices, such as, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, pumpkin pie spice, apple pie spice, orange rind, lemon rind. Any or all of these make great scents. Use a few combinations until you find the scent you love! And it will lasts for days before you need to dump it and start fresh again. Don't let it sit for more than 1 week, it can begin to mold. Then, you are actually contaminating the air to any mold allergies! Be careful of that? Saves money on those expensive essential oils.

Place Small Phone Book In Car

Our phone company delivers both large and small phone books when new ones are published. I put the smaller one under my car seat and use it to look up phone numbers when I'm out. I rarely use my cell phone provider's directory assistance service and save over $1.00 per call in charges this way.

Recycled Magazine Holder

While looking for a new magazine holder and trying to decide what we needed: something strong, able to see the magazines and not expensive, I had an idea. What about the wire basket from the shredder that wore out? It not only works perfectly but it looks nice. In fact, friends visiting recently commented on how nice it looked and wondered if we purchased it at Ikea's! So you can see, it's really not only something recycled, but also very decorative.

Clipping Your Dogs Nails

When I clip my dog's nails it is always a scary thing. Just be careful and slow. I have someone hold Lanee (she's a small dog) while I do the clipping. Do not go in the pink. The best bet is to get a very good pair of clippers that are sharp. Pretty soon you'll be a pro at it!

Uses for Dryer Lint

Uses for dryer lint. Post your ideas!

Hang Dry Instead

Dryer lint is an expensive commodity. It represents the life being worn from your clothes by the action and heat of the dryer. I know that's why I won't dry anything of mine any more. I get it out and hang it up to dry or put it on the line.

By Joe

Stuffing Toys

A great tip I found by accident using dryer lint is stuffing for small dolls and teddybears. I was making my girls small bears and ran out of stuffing. I needed to finish them and it was too late to go to the store so I was searching my laundry room for some extra and came across my bag of "lint". I quickly grabbed it and stuffed away. The bears smell great and are soft and washable.

By Melissa

Nesting Material for Birds

To "help" the birds build a nice warm nest this spring to hatch their babies, toss some lint from your dryer lint screen onto the branches of your trees. They'll sing their gratitude as they use it for nesting material!

By LS from Michigan

Worms Or Compost

Dryer lint can make great food for worms! Toss it into your local friendly worm farm or into a compost heap and it'll be turned into lovely healthy soil for your garden! You can also use it to stuff home-made cushions, or stuffed toys, if your worm farm isn't in existence yet!

By Ricky

Insulation

Since we live in a very old, drafty farmhouse, I noticed there are little nooks and crannies that let cold air in the house. I have been using the lint from the dryer as a "draft dodger". I make sure it is not near anything electrical. It has worked great!

By Michelle

Make Paper

This may sound a little corny but you can use it to make paper. There is a way to do it involving hot water, glue, a screen and a heavy pressing object. It's been awhile since I've done it. Check your local library for a few books on it to get it right. We did something with dandelions in elementary school to do it but I did it at home with dryer lint until my mom got tired of all the places my "paper" was drying dripping on her floor.

Dryer Lint Clay

Ingredients

Here's recipes for making clay out of dryer lint.
  • 1 1/2 cups lint from the dryer
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 2 drops wintergreen mint flavoring
  • Old newspaper
  • Paint

Directions

Place the lint in a saucepan and cover it with the water. When the lint is saturated, add the flour and stir until it is smooth. Add the drops of wintergreen oil flavoring. Cook the mixture, stirring constantly, until it forms peaks and holds together. Pour it onto newspaper to cool. Shape and model figures, or cover a form with it, such as a balloon. Allow to dry for 3 to 5 days, then paint and decorate as required.

By homeschoolin_mum

Dryer Lint Clay a Success

My experimentation with dryer lint clay was a success! I made a wonderful bowl out of it. When I removed the mixture from the stove, I poured it onto an overturned glass bowl that had 2 sheets of tissue paper over it (the big ones, like the ones used in wrapping presents). I then used my batter spatula to spread it around the base of the bowl. It was thick enough that it spread like gooey cake frosting, but it didn't run at all.

It took days to dry, but the texture is wonderful, and since that dryer load must have had something dark in it, the bowl is like a deep denim/ navy gray color with white flecks (although I suspect those are clumps of flour - I can't stress enough to make sure you don't just dump it all in the pot at one time - like I did!) And don't try to use a whisk or you'll be picking strands of fiber (and hair) out of it! Heheheh, What fun! AND depending on what you've been drying, the colors will change!

Hemming Stretch Jeans

I have several pairs of stretch jeans I want to hem and make capri's. The last time I tried to hem them on my sewing machine the material stretched to much. I had my machine set to sew stretch material. Any suggestions on how to hem them without the extra stretching? Would using fabric tape help hold the hem down while sewing?

Gift Idea for Less Than $30

My dear friends are celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary on Easter Sunday. I need to bring a nice but inexpensive (less than $30) gift to the luncheon. I can't think of anything. They already have all the knick-knacks, appliances, tools, toys, decorations, etc. They are empty-nesters and remodeled last year.

Thanks,

Kitchen Appliance Advice

I'd like to get some small kitchen appliances and change the way we've been cooking. I'd love your suggestions and other ideas. Here is what I am thinking about:

Canning - Love the idea of being able to make a lot of something and store it. I've used my friend's pressure cooker but it's kinda difficult with little ones running around. I saw the new electric pressure cookers. What do you think?

I do not grill (my husband does but never has time) so I was thinking about getting a rotisserie? Or should I simply get a bigger toaster oven? Aren't they pretty much the same?

Magic Bullet - our blender is kaput and I hate the food processor and this seems to to both. Buy? Don't buy?

Express 101 -- I love the informercial but does it work the way it is presented?

Thanks in advance for all you suggestions and I look forward to reading your ideas.

Remedies for Varicose Veins

Does anyone have advice to share on saving money while successfully treating spider and varicose veins? The saline injection treatments are very expensive - $200 each - and I usually need about five of them! I'm going to call the MD to see if I can get a discount on multiple treatments.

Adding to the expense is that the treatments sometimes don't work and have to be repeated! I'm interested in anything that you've found (injections or laser, nutritional supplements) that actually works! I hate spending big money to little or no effect!

Thanks!
