Does anyone have any frugal, creative ideas for making a wedding cake topper? The bride is a nurse, the groom is a fire fighter and there will be 3 children in their new family.

Thrifty Readers: put your thinking caps on!!

Thanks a bunch!

I think it would be really neat if you had someone in the family who was good at sculpting or even drawing/painting and you could have the fire fighter sitting in a chair in uniform with a wound while the nurse took care of him. If it was a drawing/painting put it in a frame and sit it on top with some flower pedals. I think that really symbolizes what your marriage should be like you should always be there to take care of each other. (or just put on your scrubs, him in his uniform one day after work when hes all dirty and just fake the picture you could just simply be taken off his boot, or put a lil bandage on his head) Then on a lower layer have the kids all joined together in a photo as one family

I saw one in a travel magazine that I don't thing is real. It was having the bride kissing the groom with her legs wrapped around his waist. I am getting married in december and my bride and I would love to have something like that. Has anyone seen anything like that.

Find small hats. One a nurses, one a fire helmet. Set both on the top layer. Put something that symbolizes the kids on the lower layers.

I would suggest using silk flowers that can be purchased at Wal-Mart. Also check out some of the bridal websites and get ideas from pictures there. Many are easy to duplicate.

If you wanted to do it your self. You could take Old voltive holders. Like the plastic ones or metal it doesn't matter. Go to your florist have her make cake toppers with them. Using 5 of them (hoping you have a more then one tier) them put something that has to do with each person in to it. For example your a nurse (the little flower fill this and with a piece of ribbion tired around it or what ever you want to use a tiny little play needle. When I think of nurse I think of needles. and for th fire fighter use a toy, and the children something that they love the most. it doesn't have to be there toys but something the same as).

You end up with your cake looking elegant as well as very meaningful to everyone involved.

How about a framed picture of the entire family? You could then place some fresh or silk flowers or curled ribbon around the base or silk ivey depending on their colors or theme. I am going to do this for our wedding in October of this year- but we are using a tuscan/italian theme and I have some glass grapes to place on the top around the photograph(black and white) and silk grapevines around the base.

There is always the womewhat easy standby.

Small mirror. glass figurines to somewhat resemble nurse, fire fighter, kids. glue them in a pose on the mirror and put on top of cake. You can probably find Playschool people and use them. I think the compamy sells brides and grooms. Not their usual stuff sent to Target. just an idea.

congrats and good luck

if you had an image in your head you wanted to try making, you could do it yourslef with salt dough(salt, flour, glue, water). maybe a "sexy" nurse standing next to fireman looking at her. his hat could be on fire and she's trying to put it out with his hose.

I was thinking 3-d figurines or maybe a drawing...
A tree 2 children hanging from a branch, one child on the grass below, nurse bandaging knee of fallen one. Firefighter climbing ladder to get the other two down.

Neat ideas on http://www.imaginativeicing.co.uk

How about using the symbols you get on most packaging (and get post-modern in the process!) you could illustrate first aid, fire and children with simple icons. (might look quite cool!) Good luck!

Make a small nosegay of nasturtiums (purchased or home grown (they grow very well!) with ribbon matching the wedding colors to top the cake, and sprinkle loose ones all over the cake and cake table- gorgeous, AND edible!

My idea is one that I used on my parents' 50th wedding anniversary cake, but it would work for a wedding cake. We made an arrangement of silk roses and babys breath, and attached it to a small margarine tub lid. It fit perfectly on the top tier of their cake.

I think fresh flowers in colors you like would make a nice topper. I did this for my parents 50th anniversary using yellow carnations and it looked lovely.
