Mr. Friskie and Princess

These are my fur-babies. The brown tabby is an 8 month old rescue kitty. His name is Mr. Friskie. We did not choose him, he chose us. Everytime we tried to walk away from the cage he was in, he would start to cry pitifully. We had to take him or live with the guilt forever! His favorite thing is to annoy the heck out of his poor big sister.

Her name is Princess and she is an 11-year old domestic long hair. She is not at all happy about having her peace disturbed by a young whipper-snapper.

This is what she says, but we usually find them in the morning sleeping nose to nose on someone's bed.

Picture Taking Tips

When taking pictures, watch the foreground. If you can place trees, branches or some other object in the front of the picture, it "frames" the photo. Also taking pictures before/after a storm gives you cloud formations, lightning effects, and taking pictures at the level of a kid (get on the floor!) is better than from up high.

Today's Tips

Keeping Buckles from Ruining the Dryer

To keep the hardware from clothes (over-all buckles) from ruining the finish on your dryer, wrap with a sock or washcloth and secure with a rubber band, (from broccoli bunches) and them put item in the dryer to dry. Also button all metal buttons.

Uses For Advertising Magnets

Tips for reusing all those advertising refrigerator magnets you get in the mail. Post your ideas.

Here are some uses for those advertising magnets that you're tired of looking at on the fridge:

Put one in a desk drawer to capture paper clips, etc (just make sure it's not near computer disks, as magnets can erase data!)

Put one where you work on crafts to capture pins and needles

Using a glue stick, cover the ad with a photo or a picture cut from a greeting card or magazine to suit your kitchen decor

Half.com - Discount Books, Video Games and More

Someone wrote in recently about buying used books from Amazon.com. You should also check out Half.com, a division of eBay. You are buying directly from an individual who has listed their item for sale on Half.com. It is NOT an auction-style sale, it is a set price. Check it out at http://www.half.com. I have been both buying and selling through Half.com for over three years and have NEVER had a bad experience. By Becki in Indiana

Teacup Teapot Sets For Sugar and Cream

Remember when those teacup/teapot sets were very popular as gifts for anyone you didn't know well? Well as a teacher I got a few of them. They did not work very well because the pot got so hot you couldn't handle it. What it is great for is a sugar bowl and creamer! I put the sugar in the teacup and the creamer in the teapot and voila! a very cute very functional sugar bowl and creamer that everyone comments on. Now I buy them and give them not as teapots but as table art for sugar and cream.

Salt Stains on Leather

If you get salt stains on your leather shoes or boots in the wintertime, mix one tablespoon of white vinegar in one cup of water. Dip a clean soft rag in the liquid, the wipe the salt stains. Allow to dry and your shoes should be good as new!

High Temperature Spatulas

If you haven't bought a new spatula in awhile, go get yourself a new one. They make them now out of a high temperature material - you can now use them while cooking, where previously they were batter-only.

Sturdy Kitty Litter Scoop

If you have cats go to a restaurant supply store and buy a metal mess scoop that is used to remove items from the deep frier. Use this as your kitty litter scoop. It will never break, bend, or fail you in any way.

Organizing Magazines

Some magazines have wonderful information in them and are worth saving. How do you organize and store magazines?

Freebie for Magazine Storage

I needed storage for a bunch of magazines. While I was at that store that ALL of us shop at I came across an empty box that some stationary item had arrived at the store. Took it with me and when I was checking out, asked the checker if I could have it. Sure! So I had a box, cut the same way as one of those magazine storage boxes you pay $6.95 for free. It also holds about three times as many magazines!

Easy Salsa Chicken & Rice

Ingredients:

  • Rice
  • Chicken breasts
  • Salsa

(yep, that's it)

Directions:

You can use either regular rice or instant rice. Cook the rice according to the package directions for how many servings you'll need. While the rice is cooking, brown chicken breasts in a little oil. I always like to add a little salsa too. When the rice is done, pour salsa in and stir to mix well. This is good when you have leftover salsa in the fridge. Half a large jar is enough for 4 servings-worth of rice (about 1 cup uncooked).

Mascara Tip

Recently, I purchased a new mascara. Immediately I realized I didn't care too much for the brush in it. I kept the old mascara as well. I now take the old mascara's brush and insert it in the new mascara, just long enough to get it coated and then re-insert it in the old container. It's good for a couple of uses. But I'm able to get the "right" amount of mascara on my lashes using the old brush, it's better than getting all those terrible globs of mascara while using the new mascara and its brush.

Italian Chicken Parmesan

Here's a recipe I just tried and LOVED:

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 envelope dry italian salad dressing mix (I used Good Seasons Zesty Italian)
  • 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese

Directions:

Mix all of this together in a bowl, then dredge moist boneless skinless chicken breasts through it. Place the chicken in a shallow baking dish sprayed with non-stick spray.

Bake at 400 F for 25 minutes.

It's simple, it's inexpensive, and it smells wonderful while it's cooking! I bet this would be good with pork chops, too, although I haven't tried that yet.

Yellow Stain From Peroxide On White Shirt

My husband just got a brand new white dress shirt. While he was getting dressed, he noticed that he got a tiny spot of blood on his collar from shaving. He didn't want to change, so I took him in the bathroom and dabbed it with peroxide, which got the blood right out. The problem is that the area that I put the peroxide on, is now yellow. I tried shout, oxiclean and even the combination of dishwashing soap, bleach, and hot water. The shirt says to only use non-chlorine bleach, but the rest of the shirt in super white, it's just the spot that I put peroxide on. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Washing Machine Not Making Cold Water

Make Your Own Earrings out of Ice Cream Sticks

Can you make earrings from ice cream sticks? That was the challenge a friend was gave me. Back then as a student, I would make jewelry out of anything that caught my attention. A worn out tubing from an old sewing machine. A broken plastic stick. Shells. Paper clips. These would be transformed into costume jewelry behind closed doors in my hostel room. How I did that, the things I used. All that was top secret, while I was still selling my hand made jewelry.
