Today's Tips

School Supply Tip: Cheap Office Supplies

Ok, this not exactly a tip on how to buy cheap school supplies but is something to think about while you are busy buying your kids supplies. Every year although my kids are all grown I hit the school supply sales and here is why:

I can buy some of my office supplies at a discount at this time of year but I also think of the coming Christmas and the kids I have to buy for. I buy colored pencils and markers and crayons and pencil boxes to put them in and then I put them away for arts and craft kits for the grandkids.

With so many sales at all the stores I can buy stickers and stencils and scissors for a lot less then I would pay for them at Christmas. You also can get construction paper and doodle pads cheap also. I also have bought them clipboards with the storage in the bottom cheaply at this time of year so they can take a travel kit with them when they go visiting, this makes for a very neat way for them to have something to do while they travel. You could also fill this with travel games and the clipboard gives them a playing surface even for a game of cards.

Removing Skunk Smell from Clothing

There is nothing worse than smelling like a skunk. To remove the smell, soak you clothing in baking soda or vinegar and water. Use a half cup of vinegar or baking soda for each gallen of water. Let soak for several hours before washing as you normally would.

Uses for Old Tires

Well, the first thing that comes to mind is your ever friendly tire swing. You could also make your kids a tire wall to climb or an obstacle course. Of course these are rather obvious choices so here's some not so obvious choices.

Got a big dog? Put their dog dish inside a small tire and the dog won't be able to drag it around the yard.

Cut in half and hung on a wall they make a hose hanger.

Put a trash can in the center and you have a no tip container for baseball bats and other long sporting equiment.

Stack to make a planter that you will be able to start plants in early because the tires will absorb heat and keep the bed warm or just paint the tire and plant right inside of it.

Mount a tire on the inside of your garage wall for a bumper for that new driver (or the clumsy old driver:) ).

Plant them half way in the ground and you can use them to set up a track for your kids and their bikes or you could line a long drive way and paint them with reflective paint.

Grass Growing in Cracks in Concrete

If you have pesky grass growing up through cracks in your concrete driveway or patio, just douse the grass with straight vinegar. It will kill the grass.

Using Half

Almost everything necessary that I use, I cut in half. From makeup remover pads to liquid soap or cleaning supplies. Many things come in strengths and sizes that are far more than we need for one use and there is so much waste, not only in the product, but in additional packaging. I feel that I can get twice as much use when cutting in half, thus cutting my expenses in half. You will have to experiment with the products to make sure that you can do with less. By Sharon

Featured Feedback: RE: Credit Cards and New College Students

I got my son a credit card on my account when he went on a yoga teaching tour at 16 years old. It was not my main card (I only have one) but a new card that would only be used for the trip. He did in fact not use the card, but had it for emergencies. Now that he's back home and getting ready for college, I wanted to have it signed over to him but he's not 18 yet.

The point is, he had a checking account and a debit card for that account and learned how to use that on the trip, and had an emergency credit card, and learned how to manage both BEFORE he will be old enough to leave home.

It's a bit late to warn your kids when they leave home. It's best to teach them how to use the system before they ever leave.

Featured Feedback: RE: Recipes Using Zucchini

Outside of the basic zucchini bread, there are 2 other ways we enjoy it:

Zucchini Pancakes (much like a potato pancake and used as a side dish)

Grate 1 zucchini (skin and seeds included)
Grate washed white potatoes equalling about half the amount of zucchini used
Grate 1 onion and 1 green pepper.

Mix all the above with 2 beaten eggs, 1/2 cup bisquick and garlic salt and pepper to taste. Fry as you would a potato pancake.

Zucchini Spaghetti Sauce

Saute a cut up onion in small amount of oil, add chucks of zucchini (can be peeled and seeded or not), sprinkle with garlic salt and pepper, cover and cook about 15 minutes-stirring occasionally. Add 1 jar/can your favorite spaghetti sauce (or use puree and favorite spices), cover and simmer until fork-tender.

Featured Feedback: RE: Reusing Plastic Laundry Detergent Bottles

I use gal. milk jugs and/or large detergent bottles for toy storage. Leaving the handle I cut an oval from the just under the spout down to about four or five inches from the bottom to ward the other side. This makes a great storage unit for crayons markers small blocks legos etc. The children can easily see the items the want. They are easy to carry and put away. I have been doing this for about 20 years.

Featured Feedback: RE: Recipes Using Zucchini

Zucchini and Pasta Greek Style:

Saute some shallot and garlic in a skillet with just a little bit of olive oil. Add a zuchinni, cut into bite size chunks, and skinless chicken breast, also cut into small pieces. Cover and cook until the chicken is cooked through. The Zucchini should still be a bit firm - not mushy. If the zucchini gets overcooked, add the chicken to start it, then add the zucchini.

Cook angel hair pasta, and toss with the zucchini and chicken. Top with some feta cheese and fresh basil (If you don't like feta, coarse grated romano is also very good).

This is a nice lite summer meal, and since angel hair pasta cooks in 4 minutes, it keeps the kitchen from getting too hot.

Enjoy

By Marie2005 (7) Contact
My coupon clipping got way out of hand many years ago. It was to the point that I had an entire kitchen drawer devoted to mostly expired coupons. So I developed a new strategy. If I am going to buy that item the same week anyway, I clip it and put it in an envelope in my car. After shopping that week, anything not used goes in the trash.

Coupons with no expiration still go in the kitchen drawer. That way I can use them whenever I need them. I have just discovered old phone books to be especially helpful for coupons in the back with no expiration date. For example, I dug out my 2003 phone book tonight, and found a no expiration coupon for a large meat lover' s pizza for $6. (Guess that must be the year they introduced it and were trying to get it to catch on). Also found $20 off in my 2004 phone book this week for a handyman service I use regularly.
