To get rid of snails or slugs, place a glass or can in a hole so that the top is level with the ground, fill almost to the rim with beer and leave overnight. In the morning, dump the pests on the compost heap.
They did an injustice to your tip by the label of prevent in it. You catch the critters this way. To prevent you have to go underground with slug/snail bait which can be in many forms. You can also mix up a solution of salt water by the gallon and go around the garden pouring a barrier, it kills what is lying in the grass waiting. I choose canning salt as it is coarse, cheaper. I suppose you could use a garden sprayer too, but hey, what works for each is great.
My gardens are off the ground and so I pour the salt water along the wood and it runs down. Can almost hear those suckers screaming!

If you are having problems with slugs, get a small saucer and pour a little beer in it. Late in the evening is best and then the next morning, you'll find some dead slugs.

RE: Use Beer to Prevent Slugs
I used to do this also. Now my best slug and snail problem solvers are my 5 adult turtles who rule my backyard! Free eats and healthy plants. (10/18/2008)
