Calculating Fabric for Drapes

How much fabric do I need to buy for simple drapes? Is there a basic calculation to account for soft gathering? Thank you for taking the time to respond!

Yael,
The calculation I always use is 2 1/2 to 3 times the window width. They hang very nicely if you use a little more fabric.

I always double the amount of fabric,if the window is 40 inches wide get 80 inches of fabric. Then measure how tall they are. If you want the drapes to go to the floor allow for a hem at top & bottom, good luck.
