Don't Throw Out Those Old Sweaters - Use Them In Crafts

Old sweaters are excellent (and beautiful) for recovering throw pillows, or making pillows for the kids to use on the floor while playing video games. Another great use for them is to cut them into huge squares and sew together. Sew to an old blanket or throw and keep in the car for cold mornings or emergencies. They make the warmest car blankets!

Taking Honey for Energy

Honey is a great way to increase your stamina. I take a teaspoon a day and have energy to burn. To get the very last bit of honey out of the jar or bottle, simply remove the lid and microwave for 10-15 seconds. It quickly becomes thinner and pourable again.

Baked Yams Like Potatoes

For a little twist on an old favorite we bake our yams like potatoes. Be sure to either wrap them in foil or put them on a baking pan because the juices will drip and caramelize on your oven (not a fun mess to clean.) I like mine with a little butter, DH likes them plain, and DD likes to cut them in half length wise, sprinkle with brown sugar, add a few marshmallows and broil. A nice plus with this is you can fit them along side all the other dishes in the oven or do them early in the day and microwave them before serving (just like a potato.)

Apple Pear Crockpot Butter

Ingredients:

  • 8 lbs of apples and pears peeled and quartered
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 2 cinnamon sticks

Directions:

Put in crockpot and put on high for 1 hour and then turn down to low for 7 hours, stirring occasionally to keep from sticking. After 7 hours, take lid off and cook on high for 1 hour.

Roll Out A Bargain - Free Newsprint

Our local newspaper provides clean, ink-free end rolls of newsprint, free of cost. This is much better than using paper towels to clean windows, mirrors and glass because there is no messy ink to make your hands dirty. Better than that, it's free! Each roll lasts me several months and doesn't take up much storage room. I also use the end rolls instead of printed newspaper when packing fragile items.

"Gas Station Free Refill"

I'm not sure how many frugal members know about the "Gas Station Free Refill" fountain drink rule. I am a fountain drink-aholic.

We have a gas station up the street from us that offers up to 32 oz. fountain drinks for .99 cents. Not bad. One day on the way home, I was looking for some change to get a soda and found .37 cents! Yikes! I had no water and was dying of thirst.

I pulled into the gas station, removed one of there cups out of the back seat of my car and walked in (shyly none the less) and asked the attendant behind the counter, "How much is a fountain drink refill." Fearful of the answer I may hear, she smiled and said, "FREE".

WOW! I was in heaven. I smiled proudly as I walked past her to refill my cup. She did explain to me when I went to leave that the refills are limited to 1 a day.

The point to this "tip", hang on to your old cups from that last fountain drink you had at the gas station, you could enjoy your next fountain drink for free. Be sure to ask first.

Give Store Brands a Try

When buying groceries and household products as well as over-the-counter medicines, I try to stick to some of the store brands of generics. Most taste just as good and work just as well for a fraction of the cost!

Frugal Pet Shampoo

Don't buy expensive dog shampoos for bathing your dogs. I use Suave and some of the other inexpensive brands for people and have great results! Just be sure to rinse them well!

Hiding Furniture Imperfections and Upholstery Damage

Tips and ideas to make old or damaged furniture look better. Post your ideas.

Cover Furniture With a Quilt

Have a couch or chair with worn out upholstery, but not money to replace it? Just use a large bedspread or comforter to cover it. Some of the prints look just beautiful and they are much less expensive than furniture covers or replacing the furniture, especially if you have an extra around the house or if you get one from a thrift store or Goodwill.

Washing With Well Water

Our well water is just too cold to wash clothes clean in the winter, so I use warm water to fill while I am putting in soap, bleach, etc., then select cold water when I am ready to leave the laundry room. I get clean clothes and the benefit of using lower temperature water.

Keeping Things ON the Dashboard

If you would like to set small items on your car dashboard without having them fall off when you make a turn, use a leftover piece of the rubberized shelf liner used in kitchen cabinets. It works great, and it's just the right size for a cell phone, sunglasses, etc. Plus, if you buy it in the kitchen section at discount stores, it's usually cheaper than a similar roll in the auto or RV area.

Discount Grocery Stores

Search out the Bent N Dent grocery stores or salvage grocery stores. I've bought a whole grocery cart full of food, no meat, for $40 which included cosmetics, pantyhose, paper products and food.

Buying a Used Car

Buying a used car - don't overlook the private seller. I've bought two used cars, with 60,000 miles on them, paid $200 each time and drove them another 80,000 miles with no major repairs. They were not pretty cars, but very dependable transportation.

Visit Health Fairs

You can get free blood pressure readings, free cholesterol readings, and free blood sugar readings. In addition, they give away nice samples, pens, pencils, pads, rulers. The good thing is that the results of the tests are sent directly to you with a copy to your doctor. You have the written report for your own files and don't have to spend time on the phone trying to get the report from the doctor or the nurse. I do these tests every 6 months, free.

Marking Pans, Dishes and Utensils For Group Picnics Or Camping

When we go picnicking/camping with other families, we usually mix cooking and eating utensil together for eating and dishwashing. Saves on water and fuel.

I also always keep a small dish detergent bottle filled with bleach handy and add a squirt or two to the dish pan for a disinfectant.

Here is an easy way to mark your dishes so that you don't lose them. Take fingernail polish and mark a band around the handle of them. It makes it really easy to locate your dishes when it's time to go home. I finally came up with this idea after losing several dishes.

Asian Ladybug Deterrent

I have used this idea for the past several years and it works well for me: scatter bay leaves around on window sills or anywhere else flat you can place them. It keeps them away. The next fall I do it again. I haven't been bothered since. If you have ever been bit by one of these buggers, you're willing to try anything. They are NASTY.

Make free, pretty, colored envelopes.

Remove any colored advertisements and pretty pictured pages from inside magazines. They are usually a little stiffer than the other pages. If they are for an ad for fragrances, you get an extra bonus.

Take an old envelope, open it carefully, use it as a template to trace the shape. I usually draw it a tad larger, so it won't be too small after gluing.

Then I usually place a white label of some sort for the address label which makes it easier for the postal workers to see where it goes. Sometimes I seal it with a small, pretty item, appropriate for the season. I use the pages and seals timed for the season.

Dusting Powder Tip

If you use dusting powder after you shower, dry off in the shower and apply the powder there--eliminates powder residue on your floor.

Bags of Cement

If you have gaps in your fenced yard where the dog gets loose or you want to border a garden, without lugging heavy blocks everywhere, put out bags of unopened cement in the way you want them, around garden beds or under fence. Water them with a hose or rain will water them. When completely soaked they will dry into hard blocks.

Inexpensive, Removable, Wallpaper

If you want a unique wallpaper, but easily removable, try stenciling the least expensive muslin fabric (I found mine for 86 cents a yard at major department store). Make sure to use fabric medium when stenciling. Then put up the fabric with laundry starch. The upside is that when you decide not to use the fabric for wallpaper any more, you can make curtains and other home decor out of it.

Grocery List Chalkboard

I have a grocery list board on my kitchen cupboard. I don't always have a pen and paper handy when I think of something I need at the grocery store. So I decided to use chalkboard paint to create a surface that I will always have handy. I prepared the surface of the cupboard as directed on the can and painted the cupboard. I also framed it with a 11 x 14 inch wooden painted picture frame (nailed on with small brads) I hot glued a small strip of wood to the frame to hold the chalk. The picture frame is decorated with miniature roosters. Which is the theme of my kitchen. When it is time to do the shopping I just copy the list off the board.

Homemade Towel Holder

I needed a towel holder in my kitchen but cash was short. So I got to looking around my house for unused things that I could make one with. I found an oak toilet tissue holder that we had never used. I took the center (the piece that actually holds the tissue) out and used just the outer brackets. I had a piece of dowel rod left from another project. I stained it with some craft stain to match the brackets. I put the whole assembly up and now I have the perfect kitchen towel holder!

What Happens To Discontinued Products At Target?

Hi everyone. So glad I found this site. I have been looking for a shower curtain to match my rugs and towels. I know it is called Waverly Garden Floral Manor. What I can find on e-bay is all a burgundy colored back ground. My towels are a cream color, the rugs are gold with a dark gold border. Each have yellow and burgandy flowers, I believe they are peonies. I contacted Waverly, they said Target has them designed under the name "Garden Room" There are several different patterns under this name. Waverly was unsure what happens to the stock when Target discontinues a pattern. I would appreciate any kind of suggestion you may have. Thank you.

How do I get rid of Moths in the carpets?

We had moved out of town for a few years and had our house rented out to various renters. Now we are back and the carpets, etc all have moths (the clothes moths not the flying kind). I know moths don't like cedar, tomato leaves, etc., and that may work for places like the closets, but what about the carpets? We can't afford new carpets at this time. We've steamed cleaned them, etc., but have run out of ideas. Does anyone have any solutions that may help?
