Brainstorm: Uses for Empty Tennis Ball Cans

I play a lot of tennis and the old balls work great for my two dogs, but what uses are there for empty tennis ball cans?

Do you have any ideas?

Prevent Roaches and Ants with Boric Acid

When I was growing up, we used Boric Acid powder around our baseboards in the kitchen, around the backsplash on the counters and in the drawers and cabinets to prevent roaches, ants, etc. It is also used (diluted down) as an eye wash for eye infections.

Read Magazines Online

I used to subscribe to several magazines. Not any more! Most can now be viewed online, and those that can't, I read at the public library!

Buy Cheese Cheap and Freeze It

Buy chunks of cheese when it is on sale for around $2 per pound. Grate it in the food processor and store it in zip-locs bags in the freezer. Whack the bag of cheese on the counter to loosen it up, and use straight from the freezer in casseroles, etc. Thaws very fast for tacos, salads, etc. too.

Paper Tip

Use the opposite side of paper in your printer instead of wasting it. Many times when I initially put in a new ink cartridge it takes a few sheets before it comes out clear. So I save the paper and use it when I copy recipes. Who cares if the back is not perfect as no one sees it any way. Happy printing.

Cash in on Recycling Deposits

This seems obvious, but it's still a good tip. Here is California we are charged a surcharge when we buy soda. I always recycle the cans and bottles at a recycling center instead of just throwing them away. This way is better for the environment, and I get money back!

Spring Home Maintenance: Gutter Tips

Spring is a good time to examine your gutters and see if they need to be cleaned. Here are some gutter tips.

General Tips

  • Plan on inspecting your gutters twice a year in the spring and fall. If your house is under trees you may have clean them more often.
  • A small garden shovel works well for scooping debris out of gutters.
  • Make your own gutter shovel with a 1 liter plastic pop bottle. Cut off the bottom of the bottle and half of the cylander to make a scoop.
  • If your gutters sag the water will not flow properly. Remove all debris and re-attach gutters.
  • Use a hose with pressure nozzle to clean out clogged spouts.
  • Use a plumber's snake for stubborn clogs.
  • Patch leaks with outdoor caulk.
  • If are using an extension ladder place a 2x4 in the gutter to help prevent it from bending under the pressure of you and the ladder.
  • Remove rust with a wire brush and steel wool. Clean well. Then apply primer and paint to prevent future rusting.

Safety Tips

  • Wear heavy work gloves to prevent slivers and cuts from gutters.
  • Use a sturdy ladder.
  • Work with a buddy anytime you work in high places.

Do you have any gutter tips to add?

Caring for Suede and Leather Footwear

Suede footwear is expensive and difficult to care for. Suede is one of the few materials which cannot be cleaned successfully with water. In fact, weather can transform the smooth, velvety surface into one that is harsh and uneven.

Miracle Visual Tricks to Make a Small Room Appear Larger
By Pamela Cole Harris

If you can stand in the middle of your room and touch the walls on all four sides, then you probably need to add some visual space to your room (either that or see a surgeon about those gorilla arms of yours!). If the neighbor next door has a closet bigger than your room (and it's not a walk-in closet!), then you need a little help "growing" your small room!
