Today's Tips

Cookout Tip: Cut Burgers in Half

When serving food at cookouts, go ahead and put some of the hamburgers on buns, then cut them in half before placing on the serving platter. This helps cut down on the number of kids who take a whole burger, and then waste half of it. By Becki in Indiana

Save Money on Clothing

  • Wear older clothing around the house and save your nice clothing for when you go out.
  • Buy clothes off season when they are on sale or even clearance.
  • Stock up on items when they are on clearance.
  • Buy clothing that can be worn in more than one season.
  • Shop at discount stores and outlet stores if you have some in your area.
  • Sell clothing that you no longer use at a consignment store or garage sale.
  • Buy clothing that can be used in more than one outfit.
  • - Change out of your good clothes as soon as possible after getting home. Hang them up so they can be worn again.
  • Treat stains quickly so they don't set and ruin your clothing.

What are your tips for saving money on clothing?

Remove Garlic and Onion Odors from Hands

Pour some baking soda into the palm of you hands and rub your hands together with water. This also works well for really grimy hands.

Maple Syrup Milk Treat

For all who adore the flavor of pure maple, when you come to the end of a container of maple syrup, add about 1 cup of milk and let it sit for about 5 minutes. Then shake, shake, shake to get every drop left coating the container to mix well with the mix. I usually save the container until one of my grand kids visits and give them this great maple milk treat. But sometimes I treat myself and gulp away. Happy drinking. By Joesgirl

Reusing Old, Broken Speakers

We often find those torn speakers at the dump or road side. Take the speaker and separate the magnet from it. Drill a small hole in the center of it and thread an eye hook through the hole. Now attach a good length of strong string or fishing line to it and you have a powerful magnet for fishing, picking up a dropped tool, looking for stuff in water or lost treasures at the beach! And they come in all strengths, depending on the size of the speaker!

You can also use the speaker cabinet on the wall in your shop or garage, either sideways or vertically. Sideways you gain more storage area, both inside of it and on top of it! Attach it to the wall with a couple of screws or nails. You've devised two purposes for the old speaker and recycled two items (the magnet and the cabinet) from extinction!

Cover the Gray with Tea!

I homeschool my daughter, and in one of the stories that we were reading (Neighbor Rosicky by Willa Cather), a 1920's frontier woman covered her graying hair with a brew of strong tea. I tried it, and it works! It doesn't completely cover the gray, but it does make it less noticable, and only costs the price of a tea bag per day. Nancy from PA

Save on Space on Road Trips

We have a pop up tent trailer and I make room by putting items that can be folded in a trash bag and use my vacuum cleaner to suck the air out of the bag and tie it with two twist ties tied together. The air is sucked out and the bag lays flat. When its time to return home I have a place for dirty laundry or a place to keep things clean and dry. It works nice for sleeping bags too. Cindie in CA

Featured Feedback: Make Your Own Diaper Wipes

My daughter has very sensitive skin and gets a rash easily, so I make my own wipes. I use 1-2 cups water, 1t-1T liquid baby soap and 1t-1T baby oil. I use BOUNTY paper towels, (the roll) cut in half. Mix ingredients in a round covered tub or an old round wipe container. Drop in the towels, cover and turn upside down. Let sit for 10 minutes. Turn upright and pull out the cardboard core then just pull wipes from the center
