Homemade Wall O' Water

I'm looking for something I can make or adapt for my tomato plants that would work like a Wall O' Water. I can't afford to buy the actual product so I was hoping someone can give me some alternative ideas.

Today's Tips:

Save Pepperoni from Sale Pizzas

When pizzas go on sale and I stock up, I always buy pepperoni. The kids only like cheese pizza though, so I've started plucking off the pepperonis and saving them. On sale, cheese or pepperoni pizza cost the same but this gives me "free" ingredients for our "everything pizzas" I make from scratch.

Shaving Tip To Avoid Ingrown Hairs

It's shave and swimsuit season! Do you have problems with festered or ingrown hairs after shaving? Here is a way to reduce or eliminate the problem. Simply shave with the direction of hair first, then against the direction of hair after that. I can't tell you why it works, but I know that I use to have a terrible problem with ingrown hairs, especially on the back of my thighs. Since using this technique, I am rarely bothered!

Cinco de Mayo Party

We are having a Cinco de Mayo party at school on Tuesday and were having a taco bar, lemon-lime drinks, and crafts for the kids. The kids will love to make their own tacos. We are decorating in the colors red, white and green. It should be a lot of fun!

Nviro Potter For Seeds

I discovered a nifty tool for starting my seeds. It uses newspaper and is a wooden form that you wrap and tuck the paper around. It is called "The NviroPotte" and is made by a family business in Eastern Canada. The lovely thing is it uses Newspaper! They have a website.

"Keep Moving" To Exercise Daily

Exercise without really trying. I hate exercising. To stay in shape I "keep moving". This means chores (they are a great source of calorie burning), playing physical games with my toddler (games running through the house), dancing to my favorite tunes and best of all: talk while you walk! I spend hours on the phone with my parents, and I make sure to walk around the house/room while I do. This is a great way to burn calories without even noticing. If you cannot actually walk and talk: simply stand up. Standing up burns more calories than sitting down. You will be healthy in no time!

Fat Free Corn Tortilla Chips or Strips

Tortilla chips are typically fried and laden with fat. Corn tortillas, on the other hand, have NO fat. Make your own chips by cutting the tortillas with kitchen shears into wedges or strips, scatter them on a shallow pan and bake at about 300 degrees F until crisp. Turn once with a spatula while baking. You can sprinkle them with chili powder or seasoning of your choice (garlic, cumin?) before baking, if you like.

A Cheap Pocket Knitting Rake

The other day I saw a "pocket knitter", it's rake knitting-knitting with out needles and is often used as a first knitting project for kids. After looking at it, I knew I could get my own for a fraction of the retail price, and I did.

I went to my local beauty supply store, and bought a wide tooth comb used for wet hair. The comb had 20 tines, they vary. It cost $1.50, then I went to my local craft store and bought a knifty knitter yarn pick for $1.00, I'm all set.

You tie a loop on the end of your yarn and slip it onto the first tine, then you e-wrap every tine to complete 1 row. Then you repeat the e-wrap for a second row, making sure your loops are on the same side. Using your yarn pick, you slip the bottom loop over the top loop and off the first tine. Working one tine at a time, you complete the row, leaving 1 row of loops. Repeat the e-wrap to make 2 rows again, and again, slip the bottom loops over the top loops.

Make a scarf, make blocks for a baby blanket, make potholders, you use your creative mind and go!

Rosebushes For Mother's Day

My mother had always told us not to put flowers on her grave when she was gone, for she wouldn't see them. So I came up with an idea. On Mother's Day every year, my hubby and I would buy her a rose bush for her yard. We made a big party out of it. Not only did we get her the rose, we came up with some kind of garden themes for her yard because my mom loved her yard. One year, we did a iron donkey planter with a rose planted inside. The next, we planted a rose inside of sombrero.

I am so glad I did this for her. She is gone now and I still have some of the rose bushes that we bought for her and I can remember that day we planted and had our own private party.

Lilies as Wedding Flowers

I saw an old movie the other night and in it a bride was walking down the aisle with a bunch of 3 or 4 large lilies. Looked like those day lilies you often see reproduced, tied with a bow and worn sideways cradled in the bride's arm. What a charming simple idea, I thought. You could do the same with any sort of white lilies and they are in season during June/July, too.

Mothballs To Boost Mileage?

Old school drag racers can tell you - to boost your gas mileage and power by adding 1-3 mothballs, which are pure ether, to your gas tank! No more than 3 or you will burn holes in your pistons!

By melody_yesterday from Sedalia, MO

Editor's Note: This appears to be a tip that people used 50 years ago when octanes levels were much lower than today and engines were much simpler. With today's high octane, filters and advanced fuel injection systems, we wouldn't remcommend introducing anything into your tank other than gas and an approved fuel additive.

Here's a few links about the topic if you are interested in learning more but I wouldn't recommend experimenting with a car that you need.

Here's a link about that states you must use napthalene moth balls in order for this to work.

Here's a small write up on the Myth Busters website that labels it as plausible: "On a slightly different variation, they tested whether or not adding moth balls increases the octane of your gas. When they revved the engine it apparently sounded better. plausible" Here's a discussion about this topic on the Discovery Channel website:

What Is This - Unknown Pupa

We found this in our backyard this weekend (end of April) when we were taking out a chain link fence. It was on the ground but might have fallen off of some plants (mint, clematis, morning glory or other weeds). My son said that is was "buzzing" in his hand. I saw another one of these when I was planting some seeds but that one had been squished so I didn't pay much attention to it.

Is it a chrysalis to a butterfly? Or a pest of some sort? It is red-brown in color (redder than the photo turned out) and very smooth. We live west of Portland, Oregon and I don't recall ever seeing one before. I looked in my garden books and on the internet but couldn't figure it out. Anyone know what it is?

Caring For Bamboo

Could you please help me with the care of these bamboo plants that I got from my Father. There are two stalks in each tubular glass vase full of water. Both vases are in a sunny window (not direct sun though). In one of the vases, the bamboo plant's leaves are on the light yellow side but some are still green and some of the roots are kind of orangy.

In the other vase, most of the leaves are green with only a couple that have a small yellow strip that starts at the beginning of the leave (the part from the stalk, not near the the end of the leaf). The roots in this vase are the regular yellowish green color. My father thinks the plant with several yellow leaves is the one he may have put too much fertilizer in at one point, but he thought it would be OK b/c he eventually emptied the water out and put new water in when he thought that's why the leaves were yellowing (from the fertilizer).

The leaves seem to get dusty quickly and I was wondering if I should take a sponge and wipe them down. Will the dust effect their growth? Is it better to not fertilize the bamboo? Are the stalks OK totally submerged in water just like the roots? And one last question... To keep them from growing up into the chandelier over the table they're on, do I take a kitchen knife and just cut the bottom of the stalk? If not please let me know the right way to do this. I really like these plants and don't know if they are fragile or can take all this shuffling around in order to clean the vases and refill the water and so on. Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.

Making Hot Tub Steps

My husband and I just got a FANTASTIC deal on a pre-owned hot tub. Only problem is, it doesn't come with the steps, and the dealer wants $150 to order plastic snap-together steps. I think that's outrageous! Does anybody have any suggestions?

Dandelion Wine Recipe

Spring has finally sprung in NE Ohio, overnight my yard is filled with dandelions. I remember many years ago the elder relatives making dandelion wine. Any good recipes out there to try? From what I remember was a fairly simple process. I do not use pesticides or chemicals and try to be very environmentally correct since we live on a lake.

Thanks for suggestions!

Store Brand Cleaners

I am looking for store brand names of cleaning materials to clean the kitchen and bathrooms. I would like to know which over the counter brands you think are really good, especially for cleaning scum out of the tub, and for getting bacteria out of the kitchen.

Designer Canvas and Leather Bag

I purchased a designer bag at an auction and didn't realize how badly it needed to be cleaned until I had it in my hands... but I still loved the style of it and got it anyway thinking I could clean it and it would be fine. The leather is in perfect condition, but the canvas looks like it became a 4 year old's graffiti board. Resolve upholstery cleaner got some of it out, but it still needs a lot of work. After getting super-frustrated, I considered soaking the whole thing in bleach water... but that would ruin that gorgeous leather. Help! What can I use to remove the ink stains from the canvas, without damaging the leather?

Transporting Board Games

I do private tutoring and often take board games in Spanish to work. The boxes are starting to become worn. When I bring them to work, I hand carry the boxes, holding them so that the tops don't fall off the bottoms and pull a backpack on wheels with text books at the same time. As soon as this backpack breaks, I am planning on purchasing a folding box with a handle and wheels, but will have the situation where the game boxes (like Monopoly for example) will be placed in the crate on their short ends.

Does anyone methods of securely maintaining closure between the lids and bases so the contents don't fall out, yet the boxes remain uncreased?

Thanks,
