Birthday Cake for One (Recycle CD Stackers)
By Harlean Greathouse

Birthday Cake for One (Recycle CD Stackers)

This could also be a craft tip, I suppose, as it makes use of the CD holders when the CD's are all used up. I took one to my 83 year old Mother on her birthday.

Small Tube Cake pans are available in kitchen stores, I think I found mine at WalMart in the Craft Department. Angel Food Cake doesn't work well. Just use regular cake mix and fill the pan about half full. It will fit over the CD spindle. And the cover will go over it.

Today's Tips

Mending Holes in Screens

If you have a hole in a screen door or window screen, you can mend it just like you mend a piece of clothing. Just stitch the hole shut using fine nylon thread or wire that matches the color of the screen.

Use for Leftover Wallet Sized Photos

I have lots of wallet size photos from my own kids school photos and also photos of my friends kids. I use them as book (and magazine or cookbook) markers. Right now I'm enjoying the 6 month photo of my 15 year old son. When that one gets bent or lost, I'll use another photo. When I ordered the photo packages I didn't send off all of the wallet size photos so I have plenty left. I really enjoy seeing the photos that I don't have room to display on a daily basis.

Removing a Bumper Sticker

To remove a bumper sticker from a metal bumper, dampen the sticker with vinegar, lighter fluid, or nail polish remover. Then scrape the sticker off with a razor blade.

Earning Money on Credit

Looking for a way to earn money? Apply for a credit card with an introductory rate of 0% interest for 12 months when you use the credit card checks. Use the check for as much as your limit to open a cd (most are earning 4% for 12 months) After your cd expires pay the credit card with the principal and you will be left with the interest!

By Anna from Massachusetts

Editor's Note: This should only be used by those that can know they can and will pay everything on time. Check the details of both the credit card and the certificate of deposit closely. Initiation or balance transfer fees can quickly erase any profits that the interest rate difference might yield. Once the introductory period has ended many credit cards will charge 20% interest on the balance transfer (even if the APR on purchases is lower) and some will even back charge penalty interest for the entire year.

Rebates for Prescription Drugs

My husband regularly takes several prescription drugs. I have seen where sometimes you can get a rebate coupon for up to $30 on prescriptions - does anyone know if there is a website that you can check drugs you are taking to see if they qualify for such rebates? All of his co-pays just doubled so I am looking for ways to save some money. He already requests samples but they are not available for several of his medications. Thanks.

Problems With Polyester

I have a polyester (synthetic at any rate) shirt from the 1970's (sentimentally very valuable!) that is covered in a black, orange and white motif. In the wash, the white has turned gray, I suppose because of the nearby black. Additionally, on one of the white sections, there are two or three dark gray streaks. I tried a soak in Ammonia but it did nothing. I also took the shirt to the dry cleaners and they said dry cleaning would NOT:

A) Whiten the overall gray.

B) Take out the gray streaks which they believe to be mineral deposits brought out by ironing.

I also have a synthetic multi-colored dress from the 1960's that has an underarm problem where the dye has spread onto white areas due to sweating. I tried to clean it up with alcohol and a Q-tip but that made the dye spread and run even more.

Again, the dry cleaners said nothing could be done.

Maybe I should try different dry cleaners, or at least insist that they try.

In the meantime, does anyone know of home remedies that might work? For both items I have tried ammonia, alcohol, lemon juice, hydrogen peroxide and vinegar. I would like to try brightening or dye removal products by RIT etc. but the packages say either only for use on all-white products, or not for use on synthetics.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you so much in advance.

Anna from Illinois

How do I remove wrinkles from my new chenille drapes. I know I can steam the wrinkles out, but this is very time consuming.. The drapes are 50" wide by 95" long. Can they be ironed on the wrong side?
