Making a Decoupage Tile Heat Resistant

How can I make a tile that I have decorated with paper into a hot plate? I used something like Mod Podge to bond the paper onto the tile then I varnish with water based varnish. I am not sure how water/heat resistant a tile like this would be.

Thank you,
Lisa from Greece

Henri (Greyhound)

Henri is 7 years old and is a Greyhound. Henri was adopted in 2001. We were asked to take him by the adoption agency as he was going blind and he needed to be with other Greyhounds. He likes to sing with our Chihuahua and jump and play. He is completely blind now but gets along as well as any of the dogs, using the pet door to go outside. He is very happy and content. This is a photo of him howling for his dinner.

Ladies Toiletry Basket For Entertaining

This is a ladies toiletry basket, I made for my daughter's Wedding back in September. She was married at Castle in The Clouds in New Hampshire. So, with a castle setting, I chose a brown tin large oval planter in place of a basket. It gave it a more medieval look to it.

I filled the bottom of the tin with potpourri and went out to a Dollar store and bought all sorts of sample items such as; hair spray, lots of individual packets of Kleenex, $1.00 panty hose in a few sizes, hand creams, chewing gum, life savers, wrapped candies, tic tacs, tampons, mini pads, $1.00 nail polish, a box of nail polish remover pads (12 ct.), glue for acrylic nails, room freshener, a very small sized sewing kit, safety pins, and many other items.

As you can see the basket was overfilled. And it was a very inexpensive project to make. And it made a lovely display in the Ladies rest room. Everyone at the wedding was so impressed by this act of kindness to our guests. Women are always in need of these little items. It is a treat if you can supply this and make it decorative too. I really had fun doing thrifty little projects for her wedding.

Easter Basket Ideas

Here are some good thrifty Easter basket ideas that are healthy and fun.

Usable Containers Instead Of Baskets

Instead of using regular baskets, we like to use things the kids can play with later. For younger children, we have used plastic pail and shovel sets, grocery carts, wagons, etc. For the older kids, we have used hats, bandanas tied to sticks to make "hobo" baskets, purses, teapots found at yard sales or flea markets for a daughter who collects them, the possibilities are endless.

The contents vary from year to year, but they always include bubbles (yes, even the grown-ups get them and probably have more fun than the kids do lol), toothbrushes and toothpaste and some type of religious symbol so that they remember why we are celebrating. The dollar stores have several to choose from, including guardian angel pins, crosses, statues, bookmarks, bibles, nightlights, magnets, etc. We will round this out with freebies that I have gotten mostly from the net and have been saving up.

When we lived near the beach, we got a wading pool and filled it up with floaties and beach toys and had each childs "basket" wrapped in a beach towel. This year, since we own our first home, we are going with a gardening theme, we found seeds 10 for $1 at the dollar store, straw hats $1 each, and little trowel and spade sets also $1 each. Use your imagination, the possibilities are endless. Hope this helps.

Non-Candy Ideas For Baskets

Here are a few things I am planning on putting in Easter baskets, or have included in the past:

  • flashlights
  • yo-yos
  • seed packets
  • McDonald's gift certificates
  • gel pens
  • construction paper
  • glitter
  • birdfeeder kits ($3 each at local farm supply store); I am including a bird sticker book to go with the birdfeeder kit.
  • Dover thrift books - all kinds, from stickers/coloring books to children's literature, each only $1
  • dollar store beaded jewelry
  • nail polish
  • dollar store perfume
  • homemade trail mix
  • frisbees
  • peat pots with seeds
  • film
  • card decks
  • stickers (I've printed some from the internet)
  • mini photo albums
  • pocket calendars
  • change purse
  • fancy-edged scissors
  • sunglasses
  • book of magic tricks
  • plastic dinos
  • travel games
We only include a piece or two of candy, maybe a small bag of Easter M&M's, but do include healthy snacks, like granola, nuts, sunflower seeds, etc.

Last year, I made gardening baskets for each child, packaged in containers for growing their seeds; another year, I used yard sale backpacks (in unused condition!) and filled with inexpensive camping-type items, like a flashlight, bug jar (from the dollar store), inexpensive field guides, notebook, magnifying glass, bandanna, etc., and included a note explaining that we would be going on a camping vacation. You could do the same thing with beach gear, and include a coupon good for a day at the beach; sunscreen, visor, sunglasses, beach pail with shovel, notebook with pen, roll of quarters for the boardwalk games, etc., or even get a cheap suitcase from the thrift store and fill with small travel items for a planned vacation later in the summer.

I LOVE themed gifts, partly because they are so much fun to put together, they can be done relatively inexpensively but look like they cost more, and the kids really seem to get a kick out of them!

Powdered Dishwasher Soap For Cleaning Showers

To clean floors in a shower stall, I use a powdered dishwasher soap. Sprinkle it around on the floor and then, with a fairly stiff brush, scrub the floor in a circular motion. Simply turn on the shower and rinse away the soap.

Using Zipper Bags for Food Preparation

Zipper type bags are great for food preparation. I use them to mix up all sorts of things. My latest was cupcake batter, straight from the bag to the pans, with virtually no clean up. Here's an article I wrote that has more tips and ideas for how to use zipper bags instead of a mixing bowl:

Save On Group Tickets At Sporting Events

Here's a picture of my sons at a Portland Trailblazers/Seattle Sonics basketball game last weekend. My brother and I took the whole family as a birthday present. They are all big Sonics fans so we had a lot of fun with the rivalry.

If you are planning to go to any sports venue as a group, contact the group sales office to see about discounted tickets or other special deals. By buying 10 tickets together, we got visors, food vouchers, birthday wishes on the big screen, and good seats for a cheaper price than buying individual tickets. We probably saved over $100.00 on the seats alone, not even including the extras. It would be easy to band together with another family or two. Also, when you ask for the tickets, try to get two rows of 5 instead of one long row of 10. It makes everyone feel closer together.

By the way, Seattle won! We had a great time anyhow.

Spring Cleaning Redecoration

Wouldn't it be fun to redecorate as you "Spring clean?" Few of us can spare the money for many luxuries, so learn to make do and change things to give your home a new look.

  1. Recover sofa pillows and rearrange furniture to your heart's content!
  2. Relocate lighting, even switch curtains from room to room for a new look!
  3. Paint old picture frames for a new look!
  4. Lampshades often look a bit yellowed after a winter of being shut in. Before you pay the proverbial 'arm and a leg' for a new shade, consider trying to improve what you have! With a form paint brush, brush a coat or two of flat white paint unto a plain, yellow shade. Wipe it off with a damp cloth and if the lamp it goes to is on a rod, put it on and twirl it as you paint. You can handpaint trim around top and bottom rim, using paint or even felt markers. You can even draw on various shapes!

Writing Dates On Refrigerated Foods

My new favorite thing to do is whenever I open a jar of something (spaghetti sauce, ketchup, jelly, mayo, etc.), I write the date on the top with a marker. An example would be the jug of salsa I recently purchased. I wrote "opened Feb. 24". This helps me to see several things: 1. How old is this item, 2. How fast or slow are we using the item, and 3. It helps me to decide if the larger size is really consumable in the time it can be safely stored (for instance, a large jar of applesauce).

Hope this helps you as well!

Stickers For Many Uses

I collect attractive stickers when I see them at stores and use them to decorate luggage, notebooks and I have even used one design to soup up the cover of an inexpensive compact! (Bumper stickers can be cut up and used as packing tape in a pinch, too.)

Wear A Vintage Family Wedding Dress

Consider wearing a vintage family wedding dress. They often were of very good material and had trains that could be used for alterations. Or just wear the veil with a new dress. I wore a version of my grandmother's wedding dress from pre-WWI. The is no comparison in the workmanship and there is so much sentiment involved.
