Today's Tips

Buying Headphones

The most important thing to consider when buying headphones isn't how they sound, but how they feel in your ears. If they aren't comfortable, you won't want to use them in the first place. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to try on earphones at the store before buying them. Be sure to ask the store manager if the ear phones can be returned if you try them out and they are too uncomfortable.

My Great Grandma's Homemade Chest Cold Remedy: Nutmeg Comfort

My dear old great-grandmother, born in 1870's, used a nutmeg poultice for cold congestion relief. I have used it, too, and it works!

Use a piece of cotton flannel, about 1 foot square, and smear lard or goose grease on half of it. Sprinkle generously with nutmeg spice and fold the clean side over this. Heat or warm (I use my microwave today). Pin to your nightclothes over the chest. There is something about its pungency that has given relief for five generations.

Keeping Punch Cold

Freeze Punch

The best way to keep party punch cool is to freeze some of the punch in ice-cube trays or a ring mould. Float the frozen punch in your bowl to keep it chilled but undiluted.

Save Energy With LED Christmas Lights

It may be time to retire some of the large incandescent Christmas lights you have been bringing out every year. You can save a bundle on your power bill by switching to LED Christmas lights. Here's a comparison of the new LED lights compared to small and large incandescent bulbs.

# of Lights Type of Light Energy Usage of Bulb 225 Hours*
(5 hours per day for 45 days)
Average Operating Cost*
300 New LED Lights 0.043 watts 2.9 kW/h $ .47
300 Mini Incandescent 0.45 watts 30.38 kW/h $ 4.92
300 Large Incandescent 7.00 watts 472.5 kW/h $ 76.55

The Perfect Gifts Don't Have to Cost a Fortune
By Kelly Ann Butterbaugh

We've all heard that it's the thought that counts, but what could have more thought than a handmade gift. The craft-impaired need not worry. These gifts are easy, cheap, and perfect for the holidays (any of them!)

Handprint Magnets

These magnets make easy gifts that kids love to make. Pair each set with a hand drawn picture, and it's ready for the fridge! All you need to do is stamp your child's hand on a flat piece of magnet available at any craft store. (StazOn brand stamp pads are ideal.) Then, cut around the hand. Seal it with two or three coats of a spray acrylic sealer and it's ready to go. Very young children can create footprints rather than handprints.

Hands Down Best T-Shirts

Create a unique t-shirt by having children (or even adults) stamp their hands on a t-shirt using a permanent fabric stamp pad or fabric paint. Then, using fabric paint or a fabric marker, write "Best [Dad, Grandpa, Teacher, etc.] Hands Down!" on the front and label the child's name below his/her handprints. Make one for Grandma with all of her grandchildren's hands or make a special shirt for a babysitter.

Photo Coasters

Insert a photo into small square picture frames. Then, seal the edge where the glass meets the frame with clear caulking or a thick bead of hot glue; this will protect the picture from sweaty glasses or spills. Give a set to a grandmother and put a picture of each grandchild in each coaster, or have each child draw a special picture for each coaster and give the set to Mom.

Family Recipe Book

Plan ahead for this project. Start by collecting family recipes for loved dishes. This is a great family reunion project or even a pre-meal Thanksgiving activity. Type each recipe on a page with the name of the contributing family member. Add a special note about the meal if possible such as: "Grandma makes this dish every New Year's Day" or "This was Great-Grandfather Brown's favorite meal." A visit to the local office supply store will offer many options to bind the book together.

Make a Videotape

A good videotape avoids the phrase "Say something to the camera." Instead, invite those who will be in it to decide what they want to contribute. Teens may opt to show off their newest basketball lay-ups while another may read a personal message, create a skit, or tell a joke. Try videotaping everyday activities such as dinner, playtime, the morning rush, or evening downtime. These are the moments that show what people are really like. Many stores that offer photo developing also offer to transfer mini video tapes onto VHS or even DVD.

Whatever you create, keep in mind that it is truly the thought that counts. Even if your end product doesn't look like it came off the department store shelf, it won't matter. What does matter the most is that your gift will be a one of a kind gift packed full of love.

The Reason For The Season

I think the most important Christmas tip I can come up with is relax and enjoy! Remember what Christmas is really all about. It's not about stressing and over-spending. Enjoy your family and thank God for the wonderful gift of his Son, Jesus. If not for that, there would not be a Christmas. Merry Christmas, everyone!

Herbal Cozy

Here is a great tip I found that was shared on a website I found this week.

"Basically this is an pillow filled with rice and herbs, you put it in the microwave for 2 minutes or less for warmth and heat, or throw it in the freezer to ease injuries, or for headaches.

You can use scrap fabric... use large scraps for larger herbal cozies (for the back, legs, etc.) and smaller scrap pieces for a small one that you can use on the forehead or on the eyes, to sooth eyestrain and headache.

I sew 'channels' in mine, by sewing a line every two inches, and feeling each pocket - so everything stays in the right place, but that's optional. They can be as simple as a 'pillow' type.

Fill them with rice and herbs. You only need 1 part herb to 5-10 part rice, depending on how strong you want them.

Herbs you can fill them with:

  • mint - clears sinuses, good for headache
  • chamomile - eases tension, relaxes
  • cloves - muscle pain
  • rosemary - relaxes, muscle pain
  • lavender - ease tension, relaxes, soothes, good for headache
  • ginger - soothing, good for muscle pain
  • cedar shavings - eases aching muscles

Herbs are VERY cheap bought in bulk, or you can use your dried, homegrown, or even cut open teabags."

This tip is for a wonderful frugal but thoughtful gift for anytime of the year. I am busy making them for Christmas. Hope you will try them, too.

Recycled Girls Skort and Wool Sweater Purse

I found these cute girl's skort at the thrift store. I cut the shorts out of the inside, hand stitched the bottom with a coordinating embroidery floss. Then I used the sleeve of a wool sweater from another project for the purse straps. I cut the sleeve into eight one inch wide by 6 inch long strips. I braided two sets of three to use as the purse straps. I hand stitched them to the inside at the top of the skorts. I used the other two strips to make a belt.

Crayon Stains on Clothing

I recently washed and dried a load of clothes which includes: light jeans, a white tank top, a dark American eagle hoodie, some cotton dark t-shirts, and some underwear with a dark blue crayon. I tried the tide cold water, and spray and wash 3 times, which helped get the waxy part out, but the stain is still there. I also tried goo gone but it didn't help. Does anyone know how to get the stain part out without eating through my clothes? I heard borax can eat through them and dreyel is for colorfast clothes, have no clue what that means. How do you know if it is colorfast? This is my first time with a crayon stain. I only have 3 other pairs of jeans and these were my expensive pair! Thank you so much for the help.

Three drawers in my dresser are stuck; the bottom two open fine. Not Losing Weight While Dieting

I am facing with some disturbing problem in weight managment. I only want to lose 5kg which I gained throughout my pregnancy. I used to be doing lots of daily exercises throughout my whole life (gym, jogging, walking) and was always very fit. in the last couple of yeas I have realized that the more I jog (10k per day) the more fat my body stores. Now all I am doing is walking 1.5 hours per day. I have tried every diet (even my normal eating habits can be summed with vegetables and fruits, so it is not like I eat fatty food anyway).

I am now with herbalife, and the same pattern emerges again - I would lose 1.5 kg in the first week and that is it! After 3 weeks of dieting and walking and getting no results I become very discouraged. I do not know what to do or how to solve this problem. I have no problem sticking to a diet no matter how restricted it is, but no matter what I do I can't loose weight. Is there anybody out there that can tell me what is this problem? The truth is I would stop dieting after 3 weeks each time out of discouragement and frustration.

Artificial Pine Scent

I am trying to find artificial pine/evergreen scent for my house since I use an artificial tree. There used to be a lot of different types out there to purchase, but now I can't find any. If any of you have a recipe for making a scent such as this or know who sells it, I'd appreciate hearing about it.
