Making a Scary Doll

To get a good effect on a scary doll, try gluing a chunk of a halloween mask to the original face. It gives it the look of a leather face, and looks real cool too.

Hendrix (Siamese?)

Hendrix is 9 years old. I'm not sure. Can anyone tell me what breed from his picture? I got Hendix when he was a kitten from a family who was selling kittens back in 1997. He has a twin brother named Harley, and I got them both.

He likes to play. Most recently, he likes to watch cat/kitten videos on You Tube! He is a very sensitive and sweet young man. He likes knocking our cordless telephone off the handle only slightly to make it beep! Thanks

Today's Tips:

Moving Large Planters

Large planters can be very difficult to move. Since most planters are wider on top than on the bottom, they can be difficult to move with a hand truck. If you have an old skateboard lying around, try moving the planters with it. If you don't have one you can probably find one at your local thrift store. They work well for moving other heavy objects as well.

Keeping Greens Longer

Here's a tip to keep greens for longer periods, eg. curry leaves or coriander leaves and spring onions. Keep them in a plastic container or in a jar with a tight lid so that it is airtight. The leaves will remain green for 10 to 12 days.

Breaking Up a Dog Fight

The best way to break up a dog fight is to throw water on the dogs. This will usually startle the dogs enough to stop the fighting. Breaking up a dog fight can with your hands can be very dangerous as you are liable to get bit or scratched. When I go to the dog park I bring a half gallon tupperware container full of water. It's been enough to break up any altercation between dogs. Most dog parks have a faucet so I can refill it if I need to.

My Favorite Tips from ThriftyFun

My favorite tips that I use all of the time are:

  • Use your blow dryer on your bathroom mirror when it fogs up; the heat will help clear it.

  • When baking a chocolate cake from a mix and you need to grease and flour a pan; use some of the cake mix instead of flour and you won't have white flour on your chocolate cake.

  • For fresh laundry, use white vinegar in your rinse cycle. This was especially helpful for the "stinky towel" issue.

  • For underarm odor, use a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol to clean the underarm area, let dry, then apply deodorant. I have suffered with underarm odor since adolescence and I have finally found a cure!
I just love this site, how about you? What are your favorite tips that you got from ThriftyFun submissions?

Ask Liquor Distributors For Donations

The liquor companies have lots of money for free distribution as advertising. So try to find out who the distributors or their representatives are. When you have your big public event, pitch it to them as part of their target audience or as a charity event to get them to provide you with free liquor. I have done this several times and gotten Bailey's Irish Cream and so on. Vodkas are big now, so you could have martinis. Also try the wine distributors.

Make Your Own Convenience Foods

I do my grocery shopping once a week, with a list and coupons to save all I possibly can. When I get home, I take all my veggies and wash them and separate them into meal size packages. Then they are clean and ready to use, this way I don't tend to forget about them stashed in the veggie drawer. I also, wash the romaine lettuce, so it is ready to use for salads and sandwiches. To save on convenience foods, I have found it is a lot more economical to purchase the items to make your own. Convenience foods are always more expensive. I make my own by dicing all my veggies at one time; I buy the large blocks of cheese and shed them into freezer bags ready to pop out for casseroles and tacos, etc; I even make up your own bread and cake mixes. I found recipes for money saving home mixes by doing a search on google.com. I find the google search very helpful and time saving for many money saving recipes, all you have to do is type in what you are looking for and they do the search for you.

Flower Seeds For Valentine's Day

Dry Erase Board Eraser for Foggy Windshields

Keep a dry erase board eraser in your car's glove box. Use it to clear the windshield from the INSIDE ONLY. It is amazing how good it works. NEVER wet the eraser, always use it dry. Just a safety tip for everyone. It is a cheap way to keep you and your family safe.

Castrol Super Clean For Household Tasks

Part of my job working for a property manager is to clean vacated apartments. As you might imagine, some of them are pretty dirty. By far the best cleaner I have ever used is Castrol Super Clean (I think it's an engine degreaser). One gallon will make about 25 gallons of household cleaner, when diluted with water. It will clean ovens when used full strength (make sure you have lots of ventilation). but do not apply full strength to painted surfaces (it's also a pretty good paint stripper!). It costs about $6 at Walmart or auto part supply places. I use it to clean everything except glass surfaces, and it would work for that too if you don't mind rinsing. You can even use it as a laundry prespotter when diluted. About a year's worth of household cleaner for $6 seems to me to be a thrifty tip!

(I guess any engine degreaser would work the same, but I have experience using the Castrol Super Clean)

1997 Ford Ranger Heating System Problems

I have a 1997 ford ranger 4 cylinder 5 speed and I am having a problem with the heating system. When I am driving the temperature gauge stays at where it is supposed to but every time I stop at a light it goes all the way down to cold. recently the temperature here has been getting down below freezing and the truck's heat only works when I am pressing the accelerator and even then the air is only somewhat warm. I was wondering if anybody knows what the problem could be. I can't afford a mechanic right now but I can most likely do the work myself. thanks

Repairing Carpet

Unfortunately this morning while ironing my shirts, the iron slipped off the board and fell onto the carpet. As you can guess, its left an iron mark which I'm not very happy about. I understand that you can cut the carpet out and replace it with another patch but does anyone have any tips on covering the lines up around the carpet patch where I've replaced it with the new piece of carpet.

Thanks,

Knitting With Grocery Bags

I see many ideas on how to crochet bags from plastic shopping bags. But, as I do not crochet, could someone please come up with instructions to knit something similar?

A Valentine's Day Guide to Fresh Cut Roses
By Ellen Brown

When it comes to flowers and holidays, Poinsettias have Christmas and lilies own Easter. On Valentine's Day, however, few people would argue with the fact that long-stemmed roses reign supreme. Women adore getting them and men enjoy giving them. That probably explains why an estimated 189 million roses are produced for Valentine's Day in 2006. If you're planning to give your sweetheart (friend, relative, boss, etc.) fresh cut roses this Valentine's Day, here's what need to know about buying them and keeping them fresh.

Stain Removal Guide - Out Spot Out!
By Debra Frick

How many times have you found a stain, whether it be on your favorite shirt or on your brand new carpet or on your favorite easy chair, and wondered "How am I going to get this out?" Well, I have put together a chart that you will be able to print out and laminate and put next to your washer for the next time you need instructions or things to try to remove that stain. But first, we will need to go into some basic principles that pertain to any stain you might encounter.
