Marigolds planted around a garden will deter deer and rabbits from munching your plants. Deer like hostas.

Does anyone know of any natural insect repellent for wasps? For example: mosquitos do not like citronella, fleas are not fund of cedar.

I found that plain baby powder works better than any bug spray and stays around for months or until it rains. Harmless to humans, great deterrent to buggy bugs of all forms. Ants, fleas, termites, all bugs, will not cross over it, if placed on the floor, near door entries, ant holes, fences, walls, invisible to the eye, but no more bugs, spiders, bees, wasps. Put Powder on your kids hair & skin when camping or at the beach and yourself, in the car, everywhere, it really works. So does garlic and onion plants in your yard, keeps all bug life away, even mosquitoes.

The suggestion to breathe on a bee to repel it, is a bad idea. Discovery had a documentary on killer bees, where they were attempting to determine what it was that caused them to go swarm and attack. Low and behold, it was the human breath that triggered the nasty assault.

I've heard that dryer softening sheets (ie. Bounce) will repel wasps. My sister in law stuffs them into small vases at picnics and it seems to work.

We have a pool outback and as you probably know it needs a lot of attention. I am scared by wasps (which we have plenty of) and they are always flying by me near me ear so I freak out and run inside. I really need to keep the pool in good condition but the wasp are keeping ME from that. We have set up EVERYTHING from bowls to the ones you hang to the fake GIANT wasp nest (it works because if a wasp sees that there is already a nest, it won't built one). And the GIANT nest worked for about 1 or two months-- but it has now been a year or so. PLease help with anything-- I really do enjoy my pool but it's so hard to with them around. Please and thank you.

I'm on the third floor of my college dormitory and there are rather large wasps that try to get in through the side of the screen. There is a small space between the screen and the back pane of the window (the glass doesn't go all the way up because of rust), that they can get through. It gets very hot in the room and my only defense is closing the window which makes things uncomfortable.

Any suggestions how to keep these guys away? I don't know if there is a nest near the window, as the area around my dorm is wood-sy in the first place, so I can't hunt-and-kill. There is also no sill outside the window, so I can't put out any set-ups like bowls. Help, please!

Low and behold within 30 mins of writing my last post my 3 YO son got stung by a wasp. He seems fine just swelling and puncture hole. Chemist said antihistomine should help.

P.S. I tried Vinegar and the wasps seemed to like it rather than repel them it attracted more. They were not bothered and even landed in it.

I am super uber phobic about wasps. I once got stung 9 times by 1 wasp that got down my top when I was a child and I was rather ill, vomiting etc but not allergic (I think) perhaps it was just the amount of venom I had that time. I have since been stung with no major symptoms. I go to pieces when they fly by me and feel the colour drain from my body, my heart pumps fast and I feel faint. I think this is just my adrenaline. Everybody thinks I am a big baby but I can not help myself.

I saturated our window with wasp killer (this was accidental over-kill for one particual wasp) I noticed that upto 2 weeks later any wasp (and some flies) that land there seem to fit and promptly die. So I got two more cans and did all windows.

Today its slightly warmer and there are more wasps than ever indoors and out. With one flying round and landing on me every two minutes or less. My three YO had them on his face but I can not do anything to help. Luckily my partner is not normally phased by them and helps. She also thinks I am a baby but today even she said there are hundreds and are a right pain.

Here is that wasp allergy website for the UK http://www.allergy-clinic.co.uk/wasp_allergy.htm

I need some good solutions and fast as I am staying indoors until winter! Please report back once you try something.

Powerful super soaker water gun. Pump and blast-away the nest, then they will return for more. Give them more. And more and more, to let them know this will not stop till there is a shortage of water and your time!
(This is a non lethal war over territory, a human should win!)
No poison mix.Just h20 and pump pressure, with good aim and cover.Lol!

Dave; I think you may have "dirt dobbers" cause they build mud like nests.

We have them all over the south. They don't sting and are harmless.

Noticed a wasp building a nest in the corner of my front doorframe, and I used the Clorox spray bottle approach while he was out collecting materials.

It is working like a charm so far. He came back with a new glob to add on, could obviously smell it (his little antenna were going furiously), flew off hoping when he came back it'd be different, no banana, repeated this about 10 more times, and then left permanently. The Clorox was like a force field. Really neat to watch.

It's a weird mud-like nest he's building. Doesn't look like the papery stuff I'm used to. Not sure what kind of duder he is, but he has a long, super darn skinny bit attaching his abdomen to his head.

Not sure of a natural repellent for wasps, however, when circumstances are such that you can, get a spray bottle filled with plain old tap water and spray until the wasp is saturated. It drops and you can then step on it. I have done this inside the shed where they sometimes congregate. (04/15/2005)

RE: Natural Repellent For Wasps

I don't know of any wasp repellent; however, I've been told that sugar water will attract wasps. If you put out a container of sugar water, maybe the wasps would go to it and drown. (04/15/2005)

RE: Natural Repellent For Wasps

I was just at a website for people with wasp or bee sting allergy. The recommendations were to use an orange with cloves stuck in it(at picnics or around the house I suppose), wear white clothing, no bright colors with dark backgrounds and no cologne. If wasp lands on you don't panic--gently blow on it until it flies away. (05/01/2005)

RE: Natural Repellent For Wasps

There is a plant called wormwood, wear a sprig behind your ear and wasps won't come anywhere near you. (06/12/2005)

RE: Natural Repellent For Wasps

Wasps used to like me. I was like a bullseye every time I went outside. I made my own repellent and yesterday I gardened all day and didn't see one bee or wasp come near me. I made it with essential oils diluted in witch hazel and glycerin. Cedar wood oil, citronella, penny royal, catnip oil. maybe it was a coincidence....but so far it's been working. (06/19/2005)

RE: Natural Repellent For Wasps

Clorox bleach mixed with water will repel most any insect. I apply it with a sponge around baseboards to keep ants away; we had wasps in our home and we applied this to the entry point -- they stayed away. You need to reapply every few days, but they will get the hint and go elsewhere. Note: clorox is toxic, so should not be worn on your skin or clothing. (08/24/2005)

RE: Natural Repellent For Wasps

There is an native trick that works great for repelling yellow jackets. Get a small paper lunch bag and fill it with a crumpled piece of paper so it keeps it's shape. Tie a string to it and hang it from a corner of your house or tree where you want to work. Wasps are territorial and visual in nature, they mistake the paper bag for another nest and will stay away. RE: Natural Repellent For Wasps

If the person who posted before about a site for people with allergies would repost with that site it would be great... I have what you would call a phobia of stinger-insects, because I'm allergic to them. I haven't been stung in almost 25 years(Ive made sure not to be) but now I live in a mobile home and they love my house! My poor dog has to hold his water until dark because I am unwilling to get stung with a baby here alone with me. also i am afraid of my son getting stung. I will try the orange and cloves idea but i don't have time to wipe my whole house with clorox... i wish! (04/19/2006)

RE: Natural Repellent For bees

I am looking for a homemade repellent for bees. We went on a trip and had bees on every open drink, on the table with food or just sitting on a lawn chair enjoying a cool soft drink. They were buzzing everywhere. It also happens at the football game in the stands. Any ideas on how to get rid of them from pestering you and avoid being stung? (10/31/2006)

"Not sure of a natural repellent for wasps, however, when circumstances are such that you can, get a spray bottle filled with plain old tap water and spray until the wasp is saturated. It drops and you can then step on it. I have done this inside the shed where they sometimes congregate." Just a quick note on this posting. NEVER step on/smash/swat a wasp. When you do they emit a scent that attracts other wasps who will then attack. It's a defense mechanism. (03/18/2007)

RE: Natural Repellent For Wasps

I heard that if you put out garlic, onions and pepper, bee's and hornets will stay away. I try this were I have plenty of bumble bee's and Hornets and they seem upset. It's only been a day, I'll keep putting garlic, onions and the peppers out, and give it some time. Let's see what happens. So far they are not staying long, but they keep coming back. But like I said it's only been one day. I keep you posted..:) (03/23/2007)

If a bee is chasing or flying around you, just blow on it. They don't like the scent of human breath. They will fly away. (07/09/2007)

RE: Natural Repellent For Wasps

One Year when Camping, my family and I took it upon our selves to cut pop bottles in half, put lemonade in the bottom, or any other sweet formula. Turn the top of the Bottle upside down, and secure with tape etc, and then leave them around the area, Possibly more of a temporary distraction than permenant deterant, and not the most attractive but the wasps should then go down the spout for the sugar and then wont be able to get out and eventually will drown. Other Methods have been said above such as onions and Garlic, another deterant was known as vinegar. (07/22/2007)

Hello, I make a natural bug spray and the mosquitoes just bounce off my skin and don't bite me at all. I also noticed that other insects also don't bother me. If you are interested or would just like to read about essential oils, my website is www.peacefulscents.com Hope this is helpful. (07/26/2007)

RE: Natural Repellent For Wasps

Someone mentioned sugar water. I put a little bowl of it in my backyard away from an area I didn't want wasps at and they seemed very uninterested with it. All I noticed after two days of having it out there was one drowned earwig. I think before you start putting random concoctions of liquid and fruits or vegetables out, you need to search thoroughly for a nest, or look for flowers that they might be attracted to. You might not even need a repellent if you remove the things the wasps are initially attracted to in the area. (08/02/2007)

RE: Natural Repellent For Wasps

Soap & water will kill them like gas. If the nest is open where you can easily get to it then it will work. Wait until they are not active and are on the nest. Early in the morning or late at night are the best times for this. (08/07/2007)

At picnics or BBQs, slice cucumber slices and lay them around. It keeps bees away. Learned this at the maple syrup booth at our state fair, no bees around. It was really amazing. (08/27/2007)

RE: Natural Repellent For Wasps

Well, this is more for those friendly picnic bees that seem to want to eat your food. When I went camping with some friends last year, we had an issue with "meat bees" as they were repetitively called. A friend of mine took a 2 liter soda bottle and filled it partially with water (about halfway), then with a string, took a piece of lunch meat and tied it to the bottles rim, dropping the meat into the bottle. You then have water, with a piece of meat dangling over it. The bees will then crawl into the top of the bottle to get to the meat.. eat some... and not remember how to get out... hitting the sides of the bottle, and eventually falling into the water at the bottom. I thought this was genius! And definitely solved the pesky bee situation. (Not sure if wasps are attracted to food, but just a bottle with water in it might do the trick? they would crawl in and not be able to fly out. I don't mess with wasps. I am terrified and usually the best solution for me is to run. hahaha. I'm sure I look like a fool, but I haven't once been stung. (03/24/2008)

RE: Natural Repellent For Wasps

Anyone else use the BeeFree artificial wasps nest? How long on average until you notice a difference in the wasp population around your yard and home? Is it possible to put up too many. I hung one on the side of my house near the BBQ area and am wondering if I should hang a second one in the back of my yard (around 50 feet away). Anyone with some info? ... it would be greatly appreciated. (04/18/2008)

My brother told me to make a mixture of boric acid and water and spray it on areas where you desire to repel wasps. I tried it today and will wait to see if it works. Of course, the area must be sprayed again after a rain (04/22/2008)

RE: Natural Repellent For Wasps

Well, I have been trying to plant a flower garden for days now..and cannot manage to get anything done because the wasps will not leave me alone. I have used two cans of black flag wasp killer (which works wonderful) but i don't like having to be armed and if you miss your just in trouble. I have tried the two liter with sugar water thing..the only thing attracted to that is ants. I have tried the paper bag trick...and its not working either. Last year we had a deal with grasshoppers and I scattered out moth balls and it worked. I am at my wits end and don't know what to do! I have even torn a few nests down..and sprayed the wasp killer behind the shutters of the house where they are attracted to... what now? (04/24/2008)

An all round natural bug repellent is Neem Oil. Comes from a tree and is safe around people and animals. You just dilute it in a spray bottle with water. A good site is: http://www.zerowaste.sa.gov.au/prog_garden.php (04/26/2008)

RE: Natural Repellent For Wasps

I have a wasps nest right outside my top floor bedroom window, and on hot nights if I open the window in the morning my room is full of them. I can't get to the nest as it's hidden inside the rafters of the house. Is there anything I can put around the window that will keep them out or kill them before they come in? I'm in the UK. Do wasps like meat products this time of year or sweet stuff. I think I'm going to try and but one of those coke bottle things outside under my window in the garden. Think this will attract more or just kill the ones I have got? x (05/09/2008)

RE: Natural Repellent For Wasps

(Sent in by email) In my backyard there's a light with no shield. After a while wasp's came and made a nest. It was getting my mom and my family upset, so late at night or early in the morning my mom would take a cup of hot water and throw it at the nest. And she kept doing that for probably 3 weeks and all the wasp's died! And now I don't have any this year! (I think this also works 4 BBQs.) Try using sunscreen with bug repellent. I went on a trip and my friend had some, when I put it on there was a dragon fly coming for me and before it could reach my skin, it got knocked backwards. It's like a shield surrounding your body. RE: Natural Repellent For Wasps

Why are yellow jackets so aggressive as opposed to regular honey bees? As an outdoors 4x4 enthusiast I'm out in the back country often. The yellow jackets are overtly aggressive with a vengeance. I have had to physically leave a certain area because one (or several) yellow jackets seemingly attempting to get at me, not giving up. I suppose that is because I initiated aggression by attempting to swat it and keep it away from me. Only makes it worse. Any suggestions? (06/03/2008)

RE: Natural Repellent For Wasps

DO NOT use the sunscreen bug repellent combos. Bug repellent should only be applied once & NOT on your face or Hands, has to be washed off as soon as your inside AND sunscreen needs to be reapplied often to work. (06/13/2008)
