Homemade Chicken Feeder

Here is a homemade chicken feeder that my husband made, the store bought ones cost around $21.00 and this one cost him $3.00. It is made from a Cheeto's jar and a dog pan that we bought from Wal-mart for $3.00 and some chain to hang it with and "s" hooks to attach it to the pan.

Keeping Birds from Nesting in a BBQ Grill

In a frantic spring of trying to garden, paint my porch and deck and dodging raindrops, I neglected to check my gas grill! I had put duct tape over the holes on the sides of the cover, knowing I could get visitors. This oversight has now officially put the grill off limits for some time to come.

I just thought you might enjoy this "keep focused or else!" moment. It seems that some prehistoric birds have built their nest in the grill. The parents should be very proud. There are several large chunks of newspaper in it, and a number of fresh greens plucked from goodness knows where.

It'll be easy enough to clear once the babies have left. A big fire and a lot of scrubbing with the wire brush. But in the meantime, I'll be happy watching the little ones. By the way, I did put the cover back down.

Hair Coloring Reminder Date

First off, it has been years since I last paid someone to color my hair. I have done my own and saved money doing it. But, I needed a way to remind me when I last colored my hair.

I wear contact lenses and the boxes have a space to write when you have begun wearing new lenses. I decided to put this method to use with my hair coloring. I now write the date I colored my hair on the box front. All I have to do is look in the bathroom cabinet and see whether it is too soon to refresh the color.

I wait from 3-4 weeks depending on how fast my hair grows. See my photo. This works great for me as I always try to keep several boxes on hand since I buy them when I find them on sale.

Today's Tips:

Use a Tooth Brush to Apply Teething Medicine

If you have a baby that's teething his or her back teeth, put the teething medicine on a tooth brush and brush it on. You could let the child brush their own gums if their old enough. My 17 month old granddaughter will brush it on herself, and we don't get bit.

Keep Coupons With Your Grocery List

When I find a coupon that I'd like to use, I put it with my grocery list that I keep clipped to the refrigerator until I'm ready to head to the store. I remember to use it when it's with my list that I check as I walk through the store to find my groceries.

Fishing Tips

Once you have hooked the fish, keep it's head up! If the fish has a chance to head for the bottom, your odds of losing the fish are greater. If you keep the fish head up, the odds are you will catch them every time. You don't have to yank the line, just a nice continuously taught line, while reeling the fish in assures that you will win the battle.

Personally, I don't think the time we spend fishing should count, when it comes to our longevity! What do you think?

Living With Less

I quit my job 3 months ago and started traveling with my husband. We are living on about $30,000 less a year, and are loving it! We own a 3,000 sq foot home, but have reduced my needs to what will fit into Rubbermaid bins and the back of the truck. All of this has been so freeing.

Must haves:

  • fry daddy
  • wok
  • toaster oven
  • seal a meal
  • 1 large Rubbermaid bin for the previous season per person (I use seal a meal to compact).
  • laptop
  • small printer
  • camera
  • 2 sets of bed sheets
  • 2 towels and wash clothes each
  • 2 foldaway outside chairs.

After a recent visit home I realized that I was getting tense because there was so much work associated with all my stuff. I have pictures of my family as my only one splurge on the road. I am in the process of scanning and loading onto CDs to see as a slide show.

My tip is to unload a lot of the stuff that is not essential to everyday life. If you have to dust it, move it, or clean it and it is not adding anything to your daily life, get rid of it.

Use an Auto Mat for an Office Chair Floor Mat

A regular office-sized floor mat would have been too big for my home office. So I bought a transparent auto floor mat from the dollar store, and put it lengthwise over the carpet for my rolling desk chair. It works fine.

Attach Your Cell Phone to Your Keys

I'm sure I'm not the only one who frequently has to go on a scavenger hunt to retrieve my cell phones and keys. The cell phone problem is solved by simply calling it from another phone and tracking it down. I have tried those little "clapper" gadgets that are supposed to respond to a whistle. Mine responded to everything but a whistle. It was about to drive us crazy going off sporadically.

I now have my cell phone in a little leather case with a clip on it and have put an extra house key and car key behind the phone. The next time I'm rushing to get out the door and can't find my cell phone or my car keys, I'll just pick up the phone and dash out with the extras and look for the original set later, when I have some time for a scavenger hunt.

Removing Nail Polish From Clothing

I was spring cleaning and tossed all my black clothes(mostly cotton) into the washer with bright pink nail polish bottle. It broke and is now splattered here and there on my clothes including my work "staff shirt" (I work at a community theater).

Nothing is working, but my clothes are still wet so should I dry the clothes and try again or soak them or what? I've tried: nail polish remover, Goo-off, hairspray, Oxi-clean, soy sauce, and WD-40, oh and bug spray. Please help.

Saving on Decorating for Your Wedding

I am getting married for my 3rd time, yes I know, 3. But when my first husband and I got married we were 18 and realized immediately we were better off friends. The 2nd lasted 10 years and was ended due to extreme drug and alcohol abuse on his part, as well as mental and physical abuse.

That being said, I have been dating someone for 3 years and we are planning on getting married on July 11th 2009. Both of my previous marriages were at the courthouse, no party or dressing up of any kind. We want to do this right, he was married once. We are having an at home wedding and reception, but it seems overwhelming. My only attendants are my 2 daughters and stepdaughter from marriage number 2.

I feel odd asking anyone to help since it is my 3rd marriage. Seeing as we don't have a lot of money, do you have any suggestions on how to cut costs, yet make it special? I ordered our dresses off the internet, and have been trying to think of cheap decorating ideas for the backyard, our colors are orange.

Thank you.

Dying Rugs That Have Already Been Dyed

I once dyed my bathroom rugs with Rit dye from steel gray to scarlet. I now want to change them to either drab olive or paprika. These color combo's are on Rit's website. I'm wondering if I want them the paprika which is supposedly a combo of "sunshine orange" and "scarlet", do I have to "remove the color" since they are already scarlet? Can I just use the "sunshine orange" and hope that they turn out paprika?

Housebreaking an Abused Dog

My dog is a Silky Terrier. He is almost 2 years old and afraid of everything. We rescued him from being abused. He loves our whole family, but he pees everywhere. If we try to pet him he pees. If we are walking him towards a pole, sewer, tree, car, any large object he freaks out. 50% of the time he pees because he is afraid and we can tell because his ears go down. The other 50% is the fact that he just goes up to my moms nice furniture and lifts his leg and pees in front of us.

We ask everybody what to do. Everybody says he is marking territory, because I also have a Bishon. I need to get him to stop peeing. One last thing, my brother doesn't abuse him but he does play rough and chase him everywhere.
