Wiz and Ebony (Miniature Dachshunds)

These are my two babies, Wiz and Ebony. They are both small short haired miniature Dachshunds.

Wiz is the brown one on the bottom and he is slightly bigger. We rescued him when he was around 5 years old from a shelter. We think he was dropped off after having one long time owner (due to the severe separation anxiety he had when we got him). Other than the behavioral problems he had when we first got him, and eventually worked through, he is an absolute delight. When he sleeps, he burrows in his blankets and try to mummify himself LOL.

Ebony is the black Dachshund that likes to sit on him (her favorite seat in the house). She was rescued from Coast to Coast Dachshund Rescue. They found her, along with 40 Pomeranians and 19 other Dachshunds in a puppy mill in a woman's backyard. By the time the animals were rescued, Ebony had already had as many litters as was possible by the age of 4 and was severely underweight. She had been raised in a very inhumane environment and still to this day, is a very frightened little dog (especially of loud noises and any strangers, even relatives). We thought she was mute when we first got her because she never made a sound (bark, whine, etc). Even if she is in pain, she will still remain silent. We soon learned that dogs rescued from puppy mills most often are mute due to the extreme conditions they lived and grew up in and also for the fact that they have learned making sounds will get them nothing, and in most cases punished.

2 years later now, Ebony is doing much better. Her change has been nothing short of a miracle. She will wag her tail (around us), skip and spin around, roll around on her back on the carpet and even bark! Yes, bark! Turned out that that little lady has quite a voice on her and she will bark incessantly at the neighbors if she sees them out. Many puppy mill dogs have their vocal cords cut out so that they will not bark. We are lucky that that did not happen to Ebony.

Thanks ThriftyFun for allowing us to share our pet stories.

Bonnie (Chocolate Lab)

This is BONNIE. She's our chocolate lab. She's 3 years old and she honestly believes she is our child! She loves to ride in the truck and goes everywhere we go (she insists on it!) We moved up north last year and she loves to get out and romp in the snow.

Today's Tips

Filling Deviled Eggs

To make fast work of filling your deviled eggs, just spoon the filling into a plastic baggie and snip off a corner and squeeze the filling into the eggs.

Creamy Vanilla Raspberry Pavlova

Ingredients:

  • 4 egg whites
  • 1/4 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups cold fat free milk
  • 1 pkg. fat-free instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 1 cup thawed whipped topping
  • 2 cups raspberries
  • 2 Tbsp. powdered sugar

Ingredients:

Preheat oven to 225 degrees. Beat egg whites and cream of tartar in medium bowl with electric mixer on high speed 5 minutes or until soft peaks form. Gradually add granulated sugar, 1 Tbsp. at a time, beating on high speed until stiff peaks form. Spoon onto baking sheet covered with parchment paper. Using a large spoon, make a 10 inch circle of meringue; indenting slightly in the center of the circle to form a crust. Bake 1 1/2 hours. Cool. Pour milk into a large bowl. Add dry pudding mix. Beat with wire whisk 2 minutes or until well blended. Gently stir in whipped topping. Refrigerate 15 minutes or until slightly thickened. Place meringue on serving plate.. Spoon pudding mixture onto meringue, leaving a border of meringue showing. Place raspberries over pudding. Sprinkle with powdered sugar. Makes 12 servings.

Sewing Theme Gift Basket

My sister got a basic sewing machine for Christmas and wants to start making things. For her birthday in Feb. I decided to make her sewing themed gift basket with some of the basic necessities (thread, buttons, seam ripper, needles, thimble, scissors, tape measure, pin cushion, some basic patterns etc) all in a sewing basket for her. You could get any lidded basket and line it with padding and an attractive fabric on the inside and top if you want.

Shaving Cream for Emergency Carpet Cleaning

Shaving cream is a great emergency carpet-stain remover. Use on ketchup, chocolate, tea, coffee, wine, even blood.

By Martha

Editor's Note: Use the white shaving cream, not the gel.

Blackened Rolls

If you accidentally burn the top of your bread rolls when warming or baking then, rub the blackened part on a cheese grater. Works great!

Instant Breakfast Instead of Slim Fast

Carnation Instant Breakfast has the same ingredients as diet drinks, such as Slim Fast but is much much cheaper. You really get more for your money using instant breakfast instead of diet drinks. This way you can control the type of milk you use to skim, 1%, 2%, or whole.

Frugal Hair Rinse

There is no need to buy expensive hair rinses. Just rinse your hair with a solution of either lemon juice or vinegar mixed with about 1/2 cup lukewarm water. Pour it through your hair, let it stay for a few minutes, and rinse it out. This will help remove any soap scum, too, and it will leave your hair shiny and healthy looking.

Setting Nail Polish

If you want to set your nail polish, soak your nails in a large bowl of ice water for about 30 seconds. It will help keep your polish fresh longer and it will help it not to chip.

Absorbing Driveway Stains

Kitty litter can absorb those ugly oily spots on the garage floor or driveway. Just sprinkle some kitty litter on the spots, leave to sit for a few hours, come back, and sweep away the stains.

Cleaning Piano Keys

The best way to clean piano keys is to take a very soft cloth and dip it in a little de-natured alcohol. Then rub it across the keys. Then you can dry them with another soft cloth.

Urinary Blockage in Cats (Feline Urinary Syndrome)

Just thought I would share this with all the cat owners out there who don't know this or maybe I'm the only one who didn't. Cats are prone to urinary tract blockage or disease. It is caused by a blockage as small as a grain if sand size crystal or stone which form in the urinary tract and cause a blockage. Having an outside cat I was unaware of this and almost lost a beloved member of our family today. Not to mention spending more than my mortgage on vet bills to save him.

Animal Hair Pickup

If you have a dog or cat that leaves hair all over your furniture, don't worry. All you have to do is dip a sponge in some warm water mixed with a small amount of glycerin and wipe it across the areas. It will take the hair right off!

Stretching Salmon Croquettes

Growing up one of my favorite foods was my mother's salmon croquettes, but there never seemed to be enough! (There never is of a favorite). Quite by accident I discovered an easy way to stretch a can of salmon. You add an egg as usual, but instead of flour, use Bisquick. It puffs the croquettes up a bit like a biscuit without any affect on flavor, then everyone has as much as they want!

How to Kill a Passionfruit Vine

We have a tiny backyard and decided to grow a passionfruit vine on a arch. It grew like wild fire and everyday for the last 3 years I have pulled out passionfruit suckers from our garden. It has taken over a third of our garden and we set fire to the vine on the arch and pulled out the root. That was a month ago and we have more suckers than ever. My husband put weed killer directly onto each sucker but more are coming everyday. Please help we are desperate. We live in Australia with hot weather and we never once fed or tended this plant. Permanent Marker Stains off Linoleum Floor

Does anyone know how to get permanent marker stains off a linoleum floor? My 2 year old has been having a lovely time being artistic there. The ink came off but there is a "shadow" stain where he drew. Also, blue ink from a ballpoint pen. The lino is pretty cheap and nasty. We've tried just about everything we could think of from methylated spirits to printers paint stripper, but so far no luck. - bronze

Cleaning Mold & Mildew from Shower?

I am looking for a homemade solution. I'd heard that peroxide gets rid of mold, I think, but don't recall for sure about that.

I don't want to go spending money on Tilex, but want something simple and cheap, that hopefully will work as well! :-) Ann
