RE: University of Phoenix Online Reviews
I am a current student of the University of Phoenix and let me clear the air i am 7 months from my associates degree and will be starting on my bachelors degree and transferred all my credits from Ball State University and got a credit of 18 credits for only 15 earned credits from Ball State so whatever people got to say about UOP they are mad at the way they dropped out and screwed things up it is no ones fault but your own.
Now for the ones that would like to attend I would say to you that it may be costly which not to much more than any where else it is 1100 per class you do 2 classes every 9 weeks then start the next 2 classes for the next 9 weeks that is 12 credits in a little over 4 months now go to another college ivy tech take 2 classes every 4 months that's 6 credits wait first you must pass a test to even be able to take the classes needed for your degree so you may not even take the classes you need for awhile.
Like any other college nothing in this world is free and what are you paying for anyways if you attend UOP; ok if you make to much money you will have to pay but what do you expect to cost nothing when you are making 50,000 a year get real with yourself before you knock something that had a flaw because what in this world is perfect not you or me so mistakes will happen and not everyone is honest neither but remember your life is yours make the best of it and stop blaming everyone else because stuff does not go your way; almost everyone who had something bad to to say was acting as they did nothing wrong or they paid so much who really paid for it just because they did not send you a check that added up to someone else's they are ripping you off stop being in it to get a check back and do it to benefit you in the pay check later from the field you are doing college for.
It is not about where the degree came from neither because that is another accuse for not doing it. Now for you people that really got played ask yourself did they play you or did you play yourself. What and where your life goes lays in your hands not UOP they are just offering you extra help in life do not be blind to the fact take advantage of the opportunity.
One thing I do want to end this on, everyone talks about research or google this google that the fact is the credibility of google is as it says google they supply all information fact or fiction so when you do do the research make sure it is from a creditable source. Last thing instead of just putting down the college why not offer alternatives it is probably because you are just mad and blowing off steam or mad at yourself because you did something wrong. UOP is whatever you make it to be but remember you will never know unless you try it. Just because I tell you the water is cold and the temp outside is 100 degrees are you going to turn around and go home or are you going to find out for your self?

RE: University of Phoenix Online Reviews
I have been attending the UOP for over two years and I have heard all of the negativity to go along with attending UOP. As far as finding a job, a degree will just get your foot in the door for an interview; but it is up to you to pass the interview to get the job.
The problem that I have with college is that our society requires you to get a job. Once you have invested the money in an education. Companies are not willing to pay you the money that you have invested.
That was a little off the subject. I have looked at transferring to Auburn University from the UOP. Low and behold all of my credits would have transferred. When I found that out I felt better about the college I was attending. Yes, the University of Phoenix is expensive. You could attend other universities for a cheaper rate; but you are paying for the convenience. Just like stopping at a convenience store and purchasing some candy. The reason that the candy is more expensive is because it is convenient to the consumer. The same rules apply to the UOP. I am eight classes from graduating with my BA in business administration. When I go for my MBA I will attend a more recognized University. The one thing that a person will get from the UOP versus some universities is contacts. In todays business, it isn't about what you know it is about who you know.
The biggest piece of advice that I recommend is weigh the pro and cons. The one thing that I like about the UOP is that I take one class at a time for five weeks vs. taking 4 to 8 classes all at once. In a year a person attending the UOP will receive that same amounts of credits as a traditional brick and mortar school.
The problem that has happened with traditional universities vs. online universities is that they believe they are better due to a person having to sit in a class and listen to the instructor.
It is up to the person to learn. It doesn't matter if you decided to go to a community college or a four year degree. People who think the UOP is just a diploma mill I challenge you to take research and development through the UOP. The UOP is a challenging university. While you are attending an online school, you could be getting real world experience that will make you better prepared for the job than just someone who is going to a traditional university.
I have done both online and classroom studies through the UOP. Online is more challenging.

RE: University of Phoenix Online Reviews
I just retired from the Air Force on 1 Feb 2009. Two years ago, I knew that I needed to complete my degree. I was going to many schools, piece-mealing courses, trying to get somewhere. Then I realized that I needed a plan that would follow me wherever I traveled. I knew that my time in the military was short and needed to prepare for a post military career. Yes, I had the same skeptical thoughts about UOP and other online colleges. I read through many review forums about this school and the good and bad experiences they had with UOP. I admit, I was taking a chance with this school if I went through with it.
I got enough courage to enroll into the UOP classes, working toward a BSBM degree. Fortunately, my "personal" experiences were positive and far outweighed the bad experiences of others. I was extremely impressed with the faculty, curriculum, and the setting, compared to the other colleges and universities I've been to. Yes, UOP is expensive, but I graduated in 2008, feeling satisfied and prepared to enter civilian corporate life. Since then, I had some very attractive offers in Government and corporate business.
This may seem awkward, but I actually wanted to work for UOP and now got the opportunity to do so as an enrollment counselor. My decision. I turned down the other offers because I wanted to work for an organization that cares for people. I am now finishing up my training and have since met many encouraging and motivated people through this experience of working for this University. Yes, it is a true university. I encourage anyone who is skeptical to visit a nearby campus and visit the people who work there.
Take a good look at them and see for yourself the professional atmosphere. That is what attracted me to work for this University. Anyone who wants to talk negative about a school needs to reference their own experience to why UOP did not work well for him or her and quit making general statements. UOP is not a perfect school, nor is it the answer for all. But when you are like me and have kids, a hectic schedule, family emergencies, etc. this school helped me achieve my goal of graduating with a hard-earned degree.
It was challenging and well-worth experience for me. Yes, UOP credits do transfer to other universities. If you want to take technical courses that require internship, then UOP is not for you. UOP's strengths rests mainly in business, IT, education, and now nursing. UOP is continually evolving and someday be able to grow strong in other areas.
For those who have employers who frown upon UOP, their employers do not extensively understand the courses offered and how they are presented. I encourage all to go to the Dept of Education web site and compare UOP with other brick and morter schools. The statistics will speak for themselves on the student knowledge levels attained.
Blessings to all who take the first step out of the circle of fear and into the area of accomplishing their degree.

RE: University of Phoenix Online Reviews
I received an BSB/Accounting degree from UOP in 2002. Almost immediately, I entered the job market and was able to double my salary from $35K to $70K. Although I have not been in the job market that often since then, I can tell you that during the few times I have, I did not meet any resistance to my degree from any potential employer. The last time I was job hunting (when I moved to a new state in 2006) I actually received two offers. It does help to have some experience to go with your degree, though. I would also say, however, that if your intent is to become an upper management employee with a fortune 500 company, a degree from UOP will, most likely, not cut it.
Overall, I felt like that the education I obtained from the UOP degree program was worth it. If you are disciplined and are willing to put in the extra time to fully understand the material, I believe you can gain alot from their program.
When I attended back in early 2000, there were many students either being sent, or receiving reimbursements from their companies to attend the UOP. Therefore, I've always gotten the sense that most employers believe the degree programs offered at UOP are worthwhile.

University of Phoenix is Regionally Accredited (a good sign), but the general consensus among the powers that be (employers, etc) is that the "online" universities are at the same level as community colleges. The consensus is wrong, but that is the consensus still. To avoid a war in academia, they try not to "compete" with traditional universities. You will notice that the online programs are typically more applied ("PhD in IT Management" as opposed to PhD Computer Science", for example).

In 2007 I graduated from UOP's MBA flexnet program. What a great and positive experience! The process was not easy, I had to work hard, even more so than a traditional B&M institution. The result - a promotion and a 25 percent increase in base salary with my employer within six months after graduation! My employer also paid 100% of my tuition. Would I do it again? Absolutely, let the naysayers vent, online education is here to stay. Online education is a growing and emerging market, therefore expect negative reactions, especially when competitors usher in a paradigm shift that threatens the current status quo.

RE: University of Phoenix Online Reviews
I got my MBA from UOP in 2005; I use a small percentage of the knowledge every day, which is more than I use from my Ivy undergraduate degree. My MBA was 100% online. Ivy instruction was the best in the world and I miss it; UOP was work every night because mostly I had to teach myself - questions to the instructor can't get answered quickly enough and the other students might give erroneous replies. 20 hours weekly minimum, sometimes lazy student team members, cavalier instructors; other times inspirational student leaders, insightful, "real-world instructors."
The hypocrisy of other schools criticizing UOP when they use the same textbooks and also are "for-profit" if you consider paying for their infrastructure seems apparent. You'll teach yourself and likely never forget the hard-earned knowledge - enter a room where they are giggling and offer to criticize their inventory system from a purely statistical point of view - they'll shut up.
It is hard work, the other students are often sub-par performers but this is your chance to learn using your own style and skip the hassle of commutes, classrooms and time-wasting extra-curricular activities.

Education especially in US is very expensive but quite honestly spend all that money for an online degree is a waste of time ahd money. The real problem is not that the study is distance learning based but that is a non existent university that give you that service. If you want to get a distance learning degree take one offered from a real University.

I took two classes from University of Phoenix and then found out that my employer would rather I had a degree from some other school. I went to a local University to enroll but I was short on Financial aid because the University (I use that term loosely) of Phoenix had not returned the money that was disbursed to them. They got financial aid money after I withdrew from the school. I keep calling my financial counselor at Phoenix. He just won't answer his phone nor will he return my calls how convenient for them. Looking back the only time I actually talked with him was when my bill was coming due and he wanted to make sure they get paid. They also are charging me for a class and books after I withdrew from the school. They are a waste of time, MONEY! They are a joke!

I can't believe that a military guy actually went to UOP. If he would have consulted with the ed-center on post. base or what ever they would have told him not to go there. The courses they offer are non-transferrable and they cost way to much. The ed-center at Fort Campbell refused to finance any service member that wanted to attend UOP. Today, college is free for all people on active duty. Take advantage of it and go to a credible school. Your ed-center will guide you in the right direction.

RE: University of Phoenix Online Reviews
I attended UOP for a semester online. My issue with UOP is that many of the classes aren't directly transferable. In other words, if you do not complete the full degree program you risk some units not being transferable and at $300 a unit (about $1,000 per class) that's a risk I am not willing to take. I intended to take 'transferable' courses online but I received no help from the administration sorting it all out.
After I transferred from UOP to attend a community college online at $25 a unit ($75 a class, at a savings of about $900 a class), the school then informed me immediately and rather harshly with several IMPORTANT MESSAGES that my financial aid didn't go through, contradicting what I was told in the enrollment stage. Not at a community college I have the comfort of knowing exactly what is transferable and what is not.
There is also the issue of one of your primary classes being absolutly worthless with regards to any transferring. It's $900 completely wasted. Community colleges now offer many courses online. When you transfer to a traditional university (which also offer many classes online) your degree will not be questioned.
The good thing about UOP is they hold your hand through the process. If you only want to think about your studies, this may be for you. Also, they don't skimp on the education.
I think UOP is a good opportunity for someone wanting to advance within their company.

I was going to attend the UOP but I'm not now from the reviews I got here. I'm just going to go to a state college and leave UOP alone almost 1500 a class I can't afford that. Make sure you have made your mind up before you go because I thought my mind was made up, but can change just like that.

Every school is expensive and if something is given to you for free please be cautious. On-line learning is not for everyone, it does take sometime to finesse this type of learning but once you get it, you got it!! In this type of learning environment you must be extra focused, disciplined, organized, computer literate and dedicated because it certainly is a commitment and can cause sacrifice in your personal and business life.
I work in Pharma and U of P is respected in Pharma and I make good money with my degree that I earned from U of P, yes it was expensive, it is all about the convenience, but it certainly paid off in the long run for me because it helped with my PPT skills, writing skills and presentation. You still receive classroom learning, you have active discussion and participation is a must in order to be successful in this type of learning environment, which is expected of any student whether face to face or on-line.
I say on-line learning is what you make of it, if it is for you then it works, if it is not for you then please research another avenue; however class for me at U of P was worth my money and I paid out of pocket! I say do your homework and research on whatever program you choose, cheap isn't always good; however I am not saying go bankrupt either.

Roxanne, I have been a on-campus student for almost six years, and would not recommend UOP to my worst enemy. The classes are overly expensive, and are not worth convienance of attending online. I have found that they don't communicate between depts and only look at you as a dollar sign. You'd be better off checking out somewhere else more reputable. I am weeks away from graduation, and now they are telling me I have another balance that has to come out of my pocket. Do the smart thing don't go to UOP!

I have been a student at UoP off and on for several years, Military activation delayed my graduation. However, I have worked for some very well respected international companies that offered tuition reimbursement for my degree from UoP. So far, I have enountered zero resistence to a degree from this school. They are fully accredited and widely respected in the business community.
Some degrees, however, are not well suited for online education. Be sure to research your degree to determine if the online format provides the best education. As for my Global Management education, I'm proud of it.

UoP has become a major risk. With a number of serious lawsuit, a serious consumer class action in the works and instructors credentials being questioned in the news, having a UoP degree would be a major liability. Over the years, the for-profit university has become so focused on increasing revenues that it has lost all credibility.

RE: University of Phoenix Online Reviews
I'd recommend looking at your local schools. Most likely, they'll offer courses "at a distance" at a much cheaper rate than University of Phoenix, plus they'll have a campus in your region and real people you can contact. UP online has some terrible problems ( http://www.epinions.com/content_182477753988, for example ) they need to fix (though once they have your tuition money, they aren't really motivated to keep serving you... they figure that you are the student wanting the degree, therefore you should go through the work and the pain involved). And their tuition is exorbitant compared to "real" schools' online programs. In short, start locally. UP online should be a very last resort.

DO NOT GO TO UOP! What a rip off! I went to UOP for 1 year and then found out that The University of Oklahoma offers a 100% online program for 1/2 the cost and decided I wanted to transfer. Talk about manipulation and collusion! They threatened me with keeping my transcript (which I out smarted them on),told me that I would not be able to afford paying them back for what I would owe them since I was getting financial aid for school they assume that I do not have the money to pay them back. They even went as far as to threaten to block my financial aid at OU (which they cannot do, LIE!) I was furious! Luckily OU is accepting all my classes from them so it has worked out for me! They are way too expensive and it is all about the money! If you are going to UOP you are basically paying for a degree that has no merit anymore. When they first came out they were a great deal but employers laugh and snub UOP now because the truth is out about them. I have never been to such a joke of a school and I am glad to be rid of them! GOD help anyone who gets caught in their trap!

I just completed my special education degree through them. In some ways they are a rip off. However, I have obtained several interviews with them on my resume. The only thing that was convenient about them was that you could complete the program at home or wherever you have an online connection. I especially hated the learning teams. However, you do make good connections through them. My suggestion is that you have a degree through them, try to get some experience before you look for a job. This might help.

I am currently a Master student at UoP and it has been nothing but a wonderful learning experience. It would be of great disbelief if the degree was not recognized but as a lot of people have said, you must do your research. No matter what school you attend there will always be a company or individual who does not like what the school or company has to offer. I would suggest that everyone do their own research and use their own judgement prior to enrolling in the UoP.

Hey Roxane,
University of Phoenix is not a bad option for online school and they are not the most expensive either. As far as whether or not a degree will be accepted then you can never be sure. My advice would be to contact a couple of companies that you would consider working for once you have your degree and let them know your plans and get their feedback. Their opinions are really the only ones that matter in the long run.

Don't go to UOP I had the same problem with the financial aid problems. I took 3 classes and had to drop. Each class cost almost $1500.00 and that took half of my student loan. Not worth it, go to a state school if possible.

I totally understand how hard it is to return to school with a child. I have a two and a half year old and am just now getting to return to school for my bachelors degree. I urge you to look into your local schools and you will be surprised at how many of them have online or evening programs. My program is a night program at my local community college offered by a nearby state university. I am even taking classes by mail as well. While I am sure that some online schools are accredited they do not have a good reputation. If you are going to invest the money into completing your masters make sure you are getting a good education from a reputable school. Good Luck.

Be careful if you already have some college credits especially upper levels courses. UOP told us that all of our classes would transfer in and all we woudl have to do is meet the residency requirement. The program I was previously enrolled in is one of the best programs in U.S. and now thaty are refusing to accept most of my classes and requesting I take their much more elementary version of the same courses.
So Watch out.

I attended UOP for two weeks then withdrew from the class. They say only 4 hrs per week, but when it comes to homework/meetings, its about 20 + hrs per week, plus 4 hrs class time. I did not have all the time in the world for one class. Now they are billing me for 1000 for 2 weeks? Com on, biggest rip off ever. Do me a favor, research a local college first before getting into UOP, I mean, they are going to tell you the world and stuff, but really its all in for the $. MONEY MONEY MONEY, Can you hear the cash register opening?

I attende one block with Phoenix and I ended up withdrawing and the cost was 3800. and the financial advisor said they would waive half the cost and I could pay 1900. I made payment arrangements to pay this amount and I am still getting bills for the complete 3800. I have spoke with an attorney to help me put a stop to this charge. My best advise to you or anyone is to check with your local college and see if they offer any online classes.I know you can use financial aid for local colleges.

Check with universities that offer your major. I talked to one on my professors about certain online courses, and he said that not do employers look down their noses at individuals who have a degree (from the only online university in my field), but the national association in our field frowns on this program, and graduates from it have repeatedly proven they know little in our particular field--you cannot gain experience in a hands-on therapy by taking online classes. It is also illegal to work with individuals on the outside unless a licensed instructor is overseeing you, so you'd graduate not knowing how to apply anything studied, and potential employers would not hire you.
Other fields would be more apt to have classes from reputable colleges, so check before spending your hard-earned money.

We were looking into the University of Phoenix for my husband who never finished college. He went to the first meeting and they were sort of pushy and pretty expensive. He finally told them that we had talked about it and didn't have the money right now. The lady called and left a voice mail saying "I'm sorry your wife is not supportive of your college plans." Which did not make me inclined to give them any of our money.
Many community colleges have evening and even weekend classes. There are often universities that have satellite programs out of community colleges too. Just be careful about student loans. I graduated 10 years ago and still owe a ton. Good luck!

I have not gone through U of Phoenix, I actually do Everest Online, and they are legit, as in accredited, just like "brick and mortar" schools. Go to elearners.com as they have the most concise database of online programs and show you how to tell if a school is legit. The instructors I have are established in their field (Criminal Investigation) and I do check their professional experience. The internet certainly does have overwhelming information, but if you merely type in a search, the reviews will be there for you to see. My state university had very limited programs. But depending on your major, even ivy league schools (like Penn State) have online master degree programs.
Referring to Colleen's post, I don't understand her security issue. Each student when we sign up has their username and password to log in. Even if you go to a classroom, a teacher wouldn't know if it was you or your cousin attending the lecture, so except for the setting and typing rather than speaking, there is absolutely no difference in the approach, except you have to be disciplined to check in daily and submit your work. I'll have my Associate's in October, then I will be "attending" Upper Iowa University (online) for my Bachelor of Science in Psychology. They have been around for over 100 years, I trust them!

I've wondered about U of Ph also. Finally went with some online courses from my alma mater - Univ. of Wisconsin. Most colleges and universities offer online courses these days - check with your alma mater. MIT and Stanford and a lot of other high-echelon schools also offer free online courses. No degree, of course, but it would look good on a resume.

I feel the same way. Won't employers look down on you? How does the university know that it is really you taking the class? I enrolled at UOP and am in my third class, I still don't believe in it but had no other options since no schools in my area offered my major. I absolutely do not reccommend it, if you can go elsewhere do so.

I just started attending University of Phoenix online. It is percieved just like that of a regular college, but you must be really computer literate to get good grades. Which I am not so I am struggling. You have to check in at least five days a week but you can check in when it is best for you up until midnight in Phoenix, AZ. All assignments are due by midnight on Phoenix, AZ time. It is a good program. I hope this helps good luck

Another option would be to check into local colleges and see if they offer online programs or programs specifically for working adults that meet once a week. I live in East TN and three colleges do that in this area, so it seems like colleges in other areas would too.

I live in the metro Phoenix area, so I could be biased. But from what I've heard the University of Phoenix offers a great education. Sure, the prices aren't as cheap as a community or junior college, but you're paying for the convenience of obtaining an education at home.
I would strongly suggest that no matter what your choice, you do a lot of research online at government sites, etc, because it's a bad idea to make your educational decisions based upon the opinions of online strangers.

You have to find out if their accreditation is accepted in the business world. Also, check out which Univ. is the one used by members of the US Armed Forces. Am thinking it might be U of VA, but I could be mistaken. Whichever one is used by the US soldiers is sure to be the safer bet.

Have you "googled" the school? I would start there. Remember, anything that seems too good to be true usually is. I'm an HR Director. State schools are the best buy. Look for a weekend only program. Don't pay too much for a "fake" degree, no matter how bad you want it. Good luck!
