Use Your Door As A Message "Superboard"

If you have a metal door, I have a wonderful idea that will help. If you don't you can still put up a metal sheet on the door, unless of course it is a decorative front door. Mine is metal and it's perfect.

I put kind of a message "SuperBoard" up on mine. I have my favorite magnets, a calendar, markers, a write on/wipe off board, a mirror, cute photos and more.

I make notes on both the write on and the calendar, keeping it pretty much at eye level. I rarely forget things now, as I either set them in front of the door at night, or put up a sign that says "take..." and don't have to waste tape.

You can put permission slips, school menus and schedules, drs. appts, car repair and even coupons for food or entertainment.

I made a pen holder, the little short ones you can get at the dollar tree of big lots, and put them opposite ends alternating, in one of the sewing kit boxes from the dollar tree, and superglued a very powerful magnet on the back.

Just get in the habit of looking on the door each night and each morning, and it will be as handy as mine has been.

I hope this helps!

Look For Secondhand Halloween Costumes

I love to shop at thrift stores and yard sales. A few summers ago I found blowup costumes that were adorable. They were still in the box and I payed a buck and a half for each. I tossed em in the closet and four months later for Halloween I remembered I had them. I told the kids I had a surprise for them and the weekend before Halloween I pulled them out. They were so excited they wore them for play costumes even after trick or treating was over.

Dazee (Airedale Mix)

Dazee is 6 and an Airedale mix. I rescued her from WAIF when she was 5 months old back in 2002.

She loves to chase balls, frisbees and rabbits! Dazee is an absolute character. I love her to pieces because of her personality!

Today's Tips:

Buy a Year's Worth of School Supplies in the Fall

We buy a years worth of school supplies once a year. Every year the stores such as Walmart, Target others put the school supplies on sale. Such as a box of crayons for .22cents. Most families wait for the schools list to come out. It is the same supplies year after year. Pencils, markers, loose leaf paper, glues sticks so on. We have a huge tote that we keep with the supplies in them so as they need them we have them. Such as the lovely teenager tells you at 8:30pm that they need a new composition note book for school in the morning. We have them in the tote that we bought on sale for .50 cents verses $3.00 at 8:30pm at night or any other time of the day.

What we spend on school supplies in July/ August for the upcoming school year is less than what most families spend just to start up the school year. We buy more than enough supplies to last the full year. The way to buy is if you your school goes by quarter or trimesters. is the amount you buy. Most supplies need to be replenished at the beginning of each new quarter. We always have the supplies so it saves the family another $100.00 to replenish supplies. We spend about $150.00 in July/August. It saves our family about $400.00 a years in supplies..

Have A Plan In Case Of A Fire

Being prepared for a fire. Have a plan.

I live in an apartment on the second floor and at 4:00 am this morning I was awakened by sirens and pounding on doors. I got up to look and see what was going on and a knock immediately came to my door. I opened and it was a fire fighter yelling, "Get out, your apartment is on fire!" and smoke was billowing in through the doorway.

I sleep only in undies and a t-shirt but blessedly my bottoms and slippers were next to my bed so I was able to retrieve them quickly. However, I ended up wasting precious time grabbing eyeglasses in one place, wallet and keys in another place, purse with address book in yet another place and my kitty hiding under the bed.

I was able to round up the material items while fire fighter helped rescue the kitty in just over a minute but in hind sight I have come to realize that all important articles should be in one spot near the door at all times because even a few seconds, when there's smoke and fire, can be a matter of life and death. Had my items all been in one spot near the door, all I would have had to do was grab my precious kitty and then the purse with everything in it on the way out the door.

Some people wouldn't even open their doors to the fire fighters and they had to bust the doors down and make them get out. Just grab what you have to, or can, and get out!!!

My apartment ended up being saved and okay but seven others were damaged and two completely.

I will close this letter with a smile. I had put my sweat pants on backwards. ;-)

THANKFUL FOR OUR FIRE FIGHTERS!

Reuse Wine Boxes

Next time you are at the grocery store, ask for those empty boxes used to hold bottles of wine. They fit really well under most bathroom sinks and with the 12-bottle insert left inside (most important!) you can store all the various bottles of shampoo, liquid soap, toilet bowl cleaner, ajax, etc; one in each slot. I even wallpapered my boxes, because I wanted them to look pretty every time I opened my cupboard. Best of all, the stuff under our sinks is now organized (it is so much easier to find things!) Who could ask for more, free stuff, easy to do, and it looks good.

Salmonella Contamination Reported In Pet Food

Possible Salmonella contamination alert! Local news has reported that the FDA has recalled several pet food brands for possible salmonella contamination. This contamination has caused people, as well as pets, to get sick. For the complete story and list of products and serial numbers, please see:

It was reported that people got sick from failing to clean their hands after preparing the food.

Use Joy for Fleas

Tip on ridding your pets of fleas! My daughter is a professional dog/cat groomer. When fleas are a problem at her shop, they use a dilution of lemon Joy dishwashing liquid. Take about 1 and 1/2 inches in the bottom of the original bottle and then dilute it with water to fill to top again. Shampoo your pet, using care not to get it in their eyes. Lather them well! You may bath them with your favorite shampoo after the initial Joy bath and thorough rinse! Works like a charm!

My Mitten Drying Rack Has Many Uses

I get a lot of use out of a simple mitten drying rack! I use it to dry my rubber gloves after cleaning, my ziploc bags that I wash and save, dish towels (which do not dry very fast in the kitchen). I also put my grandson's little wet shoes on the mitten tree. I like to put the "tree" out on the front or back porch to dry in the fresh air. This saves space and drying time.

Source: This is just something I started doing when I realized the mitten rack just sat in the mudroom without getting much use!

Give Unwanted Food to Family or Friends

I am terrible when it comes to passing up the snacks when I go to the store. I am trying to curb that desire to snack on chips and dip! This week, I cleaned out my kitchen cabinets and because my dad is on a pension I called him to offer it to him and he accepted GLADLY!

Most of the things I splurged on (in the past but this is going to HAVE to change) luckily, were items in individually wrapped packages! This made it a little nicer for dad to deal with. There were a few canned goods and several boxes of no bake desserts that I bought at the time "thinking" I would want to fix but didn't. I told him he could divvy it up with his girlfriend if he wanted to or give some of it to the dog! I just needed rid of it!

Using Argan Oil

Description:

Traditionally this oil has only been used in the region of Morocco it is produced. This oil is high in Vitamin E. Green in color, appear similar but larger than olives. Dog Is Afraid Of Everything But People

I have a 3 yr old mini dachshund with 2 problems. She is my first non-rescue dog and I don't know what to do for her "reverse sneezes" and her fearfulness. The only thing she is not afraid of is people. If I wipe her feet of sand, she will shy away for days, etc. I have never seen a non abused dog as fearful as she is. Any ideas?

16 HP Briggs and Stratton Engine Won't Start

I have a 16 HP Briggs and Stratton engine that will not crank on a Craftsman riding mower. The engine model number is 310707-0136-E1

When I turn the engine I don't even hear a click but I think I hear something up by the choke on the carburetor. When I remove the fuse I don't hear this noise so I don't think it is the fuse.

I just replaced the battery and know it is good because I accidentally touched the other terminal with the wrench when tightening and got sparking.

Where do I start looking. Starter, solenoid, ignition switch? I thought I saw where someone said to remove the cover over the starter gear to make sure it is not jammed in the flywheel and not releasing. But I thought I would hear a clicking or something but I'm hearing nothing.

Can you give me some suggestions step by step starting with the easiest?

Corn Syrup Vs. Honey

I make a granola bar that's supposed to coat dry ingredients with a chewy, sticky sauce that's made with brown sugar, honey, and butter. We really don't like the honey flavor and it gets too sweet for our tastes. Can corn syrup be added to brown sugar and butter, and does this make it softer or harder?

I would think that corn syrup is not as sweet as honey, and would extend the volume, and hopefully would not make it too hard. Or should I add some water? Also, lately I've had a hard time melting the brown sugar in the butter. It just seems to stay granulated. Got any ideas?

Odor Coming From Chipboard Flooring

We had intended to lay a laminate floor in our dining room which includes an under stair cupboard previously used for storage. We laid plywood over the old chipboard floor with PVA and screws. Since then we have been getting an unpleasant odor from the cupboard area but nothing from any of the rest of the floor. We have now lifted the plywood in the cupboard to try and find the source of the smell. We have sealed the area with PVA but still the smell occurs.

The only thing that had happened sometime in the past was that some cider was spilled in this cupboard. Would this have re-acted with the chipboard flooring? What can we do to get rid of this odor? Until we do, we cannot proceed to lay any new flooring. Any help would be appreciated.

Trouble With 4H Projects

How do I handle this one? My younger daughters all sew and are in 4H. Our club does not have a sewing project leader, so they work their projects at home. We also homeschool, and we do sewing and other home ec projects as well. We also have Amish roots, and needlework is sort of in our blood. It is taught at a very early age. My girls projects are of the level of an Amish girls the same age, but not of an "Englishers". As a result, they are very good little seamstress, and have made numerous high quality outfits, better than many adults can sew.

Our problem is when they enter their projects in the fair, they are marked down with reasons of "outfit or project skills are not age appropriate" or projects are removed with a tag of "appears the parent made this project". We have tried putting photos of them making their projects in with the project, but that does not help.

The kids and the leaders of our group are not allowed to talk to the judges until after the project is judged. We have different judges each event, so they are not likely to remember that they are skilled little girls. Last fair a judge said at their age they should be making 2 piece pillows, not a dress and purse set.

My girls love sewing and don't want to drop it as a project, nor do I feel they should enter a 2 piece pillow instead of what they are really capable of. We have another fair next month and I am trying to look for a way to get a better grip on it, without discouraging the girls. FYI, in 4H, they are not judged against other kids projects. Instead all projects are judged against a checklist, so technically all entered projects could get a blue, red, white or yellow ribbon.
