Contests:

These contests are weekly. We pick 2 tip winners and 1 photo winner at the end of each week. Each winner will win $25!

Today's Tips:

Have Kids Pick Their Presents from Santa

With the holiday season coming up quickly it reminds me of what I did when my daughter was little and in grade school. On Thanksgiving evening, I would break out several magazines like Sears, Penny's or even Kmart/Walmart advertisements for her to look at, telling her that there were so many children in the world now that it was my understanding that each child only got to choose $100 worth of gifts from these catalogs. Parents would then turn in the order to Santa BUT ONLY if the items selected totaled $100 or less and no more.

Well, this kept her quite occupied and busy for several days IF not a whole week. This, I felt, was a sure fire way to show my daughter that these "toys" did not come easily, not even for Santa Claus. That they cost him a lot of money too, even IF his elves were making them for her and the other children world wide to have.

She would begin Thanksgiving evening picking out items, adding them all up and if it was over $100 she would have to start all over omitting something until it totaled $100 or near that amount.

This taught her how to add and subtract quite well I think. In fact so well, that she is now a Vice President of a bank here in NC.

She now does the same thing with her three small children to this day. I think this taught her the value of a dollar at a very early age and that these things (toys) were not free for anyone in this life.

I challenge you to try this suggestion with your own little ones this year and see for yourself that Xmas does not have to cost a lot when you do it this way.

Sticky Notes at an Angle

My mother uses a unique way to remember things she has to do or appointments she has to keep. She writes them on a sticky note, and places them at an ANGLE on a cupboard, mirror, fridge, etc. Having them at an angle makes you notice them as they are not level. To most people this is annoying, and therefore you notice them every time you go by! No more forgotten to do lists!

Youth Scavenger Food Hunt

My Church's youth recently had a "Scavenger Hunt". It consisted of groups of teenagers (with an adult), going door-to-door asking for canned goods. The group with the most donations was the winner. They collected over 15 boxes of canned goods to donate to the local soup kitchen. It was a fun way to give back.

Use a Hanging Towel in the Kitchen

To save on paper towels, and land fill. Tie a hanging towel in the kitchen. They are hard to find, but easy to make. I use mine, when cooking and cleaning the whole time.

Fluffing Indentations in Carpet

If you find indentations in your carpet after moving a piece of furniture, get a clean dish cloth or face cloth and put it in hot water and then wring it out. Place the cloth in the microwave and get it as hot as you want, about 3 minutes. Take the cloth very carefully and put in a coffee cup. Place the cup over the indentation and let it sit for a few minutes. The steam will puff up the fiber in the carpet and the indentation will be gone.

Use Rubber Gloves for Rubber Bands

What do you do when your rubber cleaning gloves get a hole or one of the pair is lost? Don't throw them away. Cut them into strips. They make great heavy duty rubber bands. Put them around hardcover books; they will stay together. Newspapers won't get loose even in a bad wind! They work great in attaching bean poles together. But they will crush tender vines, be careful!

Buy Sweet Potatoes on Sale and Store

I have been waiting and it is now time. Sweet potatoes are on sale for Thanksgiving. I don't know the price for other areas, but the price in the Hot Springs WalMart stores is 25 cents a pound. If you have a place that is cold but doesn't get down to freezing, such as a garage, to store them, buy as many as you think you can use by New Years. I bought about 1/2 a bushel last year and used the last of them a few days after the New Year, and they were good to the last potato.

Keep Frozen Bread Dough on Hand

Keep frozen bread dough on hand to save time. You can substitute the thawed dough for just about any yeast bread recipe. I use it for pizza dough (just thaw and roll), sweet rolls, roll out thawed dough, spread with butter sprinkle with brown or white sugar, cinnamon, nuts and raisins. Roll like jelly roll, slice and place in buttered pan that has been sprinkled with brown sugar. Let rise and bake at 350 for about 25 minutes. Super easy and great for the holidays. You can also spread with cherry pie filling, roll and cut, place in greased pan. But when they are done drizzle with a confectioner sugar glaze. Yum!

You can use the dough for homemade herb bread, just roll thawed dough into a rectangle, spread with butter or margarine, sprinkle with your favorite herbs, garlic powder, and Parmesan cheese. Roll up as for bread, and bake in a greased pan let rise about 30 minutes or so and bake at 350 for about 30 minutes.

You can make stromboli, calzones (spread ricotta cheese, then sliced ham, then pepperoni, fold in half and seal edges. I spray Pam on top sprinkle with garlic powder and bake. We dip it in spaghetti sauce, ohhhh, yum, its so good and SO much cheaper then eating out.

Happy Thanksgiving all!

Day After Thanksgiving Dinner

Looking for a good use for all those Thanksgiving leftovers? My family gets together with 2-3 other families for dinner the day after Thanksgiving. We all bring our leftovers and share what we have. Then we all take home "go plates". It is a fun way to share another meal.

Use Your Turkey Bones for Soup

Think you've got your turkey pretty well stripped? Think again. After all that turkey tetrazini, turkey hash, turkey salad, etc, try turkey soup.

Toss all the turkey bones into a large pot. Cover the bones with water, add seasonings to taste, and simmer two hours. While the bones are simmering, peel carrots, celery and whatever other veggies you like. Add these to the pot. Cook an additional hour to hour and a half.

If desired, add a half pound of egg noodles near the end of the cooking time. Once the noodles are cooked according to the time specified on the package, remove the bones (carefully, so you don't burn yourself.) your turkey soup is ready to enjoy.

Use Leaves and Newspapers for Mulch

Use all the leaves and newspaper you can get your hands on. They are great mulch. I started by putting down newspaper in a new natural area I want to start. I have quite a few layers. Now that leaves have fallen, I have raked all into that area, along with all the ones my neighbors have bagged. By spring, the weather will have turned these into some great mulch.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

A man traveling down a country road was forced to stop before a giant puddle covering the entire road. Looking to the side of the road, the man noticed a farmer leaning on a fence. "Think it's safe to cross?" the man asked.

"I reckon so," replied the farmer. The car was immediately swallowed by the puddle as the man drove in. In fact, it was so deep that he had to roll his window down to swim out of his car back to the surface. As his head broke the surface the man said to the farmer, "I thought you said I could safely drive through this puddle!"

"Well, shoot!" said the farmer, scratching his head. "It only come up chest-high on my ducks!"

Gift Ideas for an "Army" Guy

I am looking for help with a frugal gift for my brother.

I am normally very good at picking out gifts for people around me but I am having a really tough time figuring out what to get my brother. We are not close and don't talk, though we are not at odds or anything. I normally don't get him a gift (he hasn't gotten me one since the 90's! haha) but my father passed away this year and he will be with my mother for the holidays (I can't make it because of work).

We lead completely different lives and have nothing in common which makes it even tougher! I make TONS of stuff including soap, wine, candles and baked goods, none of which he'd be interested in, unfortunately.

He is an army guy (kind of traditional and conservative in a lot of ways) and I am an alternative free-spirit hippy type (he thinks I'm weird! lol)! He's not into colognes or shower stuff, nor does he like it when anyone buys clothes for him. He eats really healthy so no chocolate or junk food either. HELP! He's also 39 years old if that helps.

Any help with this would be much appreciated! I've been thinking about this for awhile and have come up with nothing. Thanks!

Can Changing Food Kill a Dog?

My daughter's dog died of "bloating". She is blaming herself because she changed from homemade food to science diet. She feels that she killed her baby. I am sure that it would take a while for the change to cause death. Her poor baby died a horrible death in her arms. Does anyone have any advice?

Having Pygmy Goats as Pets

I am wanting to get a couple of pygmy goats, mostly for pets but they are also supposed to be good for a free lawn mower and pest control. The breeder that I spoke with said that she doesn't have a shelter and they don't need it either. Is this true?

She also said that you can put them on a long dog leash (20ft) so you can move them around and not worry about a fence. I live in the country so I don't have rules or restrictions about this. I would like to find out if this is true or not with the shelter and the leash thing. Her's are very tame and they behave more like a dog would with listening to commands and such.

We live in North Florida so it is cold here at times but not much. We have dogs also in a fence and I imagine they will be a part of the family like our dogs are. Thank you.
