Uncomfortable and Sleepy After Lunch

I feel uncomfortable and sleepy after my lunch everyday. Mostly I eat rice, but I take in a normal quantity of food. This is a big problem. Please give me some advice, if someone is experienced in this. Thanks.

I think it is the rice making you sleepy. Especially if it is white rice. Any simple carbs will probably have the same effect. Or too much carbs. White rice really spikes my blood sugar levels so I eat brown rice now. You could try adding more protein to your lunch.

I would pick two different fruits or vegetable that you can eat raw and add that to your lunch. I would do a food challenge and go off of rice for a few weeks, or even a week. See how you feel. Try to add foods that are as close to their natural form as possible. That means not boxed or packaged.

Also, remember how wonderful and full of vitamins simple cucumbers are. They are so great in a pitcher of water, put some slices in ice water and stir and then drink...eat the slices afterward! It is so refreshing for the body both inside and out!

I would always recommend vitamin B12, Magnesium, C, and also a good multivitamin everyday and eat lots of avocados they are natural energy builders and they build you back up and get your immunity stronger after you have been weak.

B12 and magnesium are natural uppers and they are full of energy. So don't take them before bed. Eat lots of sunflower seeds, they are full of great wonderful energy!

Drop down the amount of sugary drinks you drink if you drink any and add water, drink enough everyday, as it is easy to get dehydrated. A friend on here told me that if your blood is orangy red it means you are anemic, and you need an iron supplement, if you take iron take a C with it.

Blessings, Robyn

Have you had a check up? You might be a diabetic. They get sleepy a lot. They do not need to drink soda pops, good luck.

I had the same thing:

For a few years I had the exact same symptoms. After lunch I was always very tired & had to take a nap about 40 minutes after my lunch. My doctor suspected a mild form of hypoglycemia (the opposite of diabetes) & did a test for this (which I did not have)

See if this helps: (this I how I got back my energy)

For one week try eating no carbs at lunch & instead eat only protein & veggies, for example a piece of chicken with some veggies or a scoop of tuna on a nice salad & maybe some nuts or unsalted sunflower seeds & a glass of milk (not juice because of the high sugar content), then if you start feeling less tired, you will know it's the carbs (probably the rice) causing a spike in your blood sugar then a dramatic drop (after your insulin kicks in) which is causing your to be tired.

Good Carbs

You can also switch from white rice to brown rice & from white bread to a crunchy multi-grain bread & stop eating noodles, potatoes, & other "bad" carbs at lunch & eat only the "good" carbs which don't dump a bunch of sugar into your system, suddenly causing a spike in your insulin then a quick drop which makes many people feel tired. But just do the "no carbs at lunch" for 1 week & see how it goes, or at least switch to brown rice & eat only a little of it.

Short Naps Can Help Us:

Also it is natural for humans to feel tired half-way through the day. According to sleep studies, if we can take a short nap (20 - 40 minutes) half-way through our awake period then we will be healthier, have more energy & get more done. The sleep experts say you should keep your nap under 45 minutes so you don't go into to deep sleep which can make it harder to wake up & cause you to be even MORE tired.

Also, next time you cut yourself take a look at the color of your blood & see if it is more orange-red or dark red or purplish-red. Because if your blood is more orange-red, you probably have less hematocrit (red blood cells) & could be anemic. If you think you may be anemic, talk to your doctor about talking iron supplements. Before buying an iron supplement, talk to your pharmacist because there are 3 different kinds of iron & the cheapest (Ferrous Sulfate) has more side-effects.

It is the rice. Make yourself a nice salad full of veges. Carots, cucumbers, a radish or two, tomatoes, and maybe slices of avacado. Put some chicken or any kind or cooked meat in it or a boiled egg. Drink something without sugar. It might take a few days but you will feel like a new person and will look forward to your lunch salad.

You are having too many carbohydrates and not enough protein and vegetables with fiber.

As to the rice - if white rice is your only rice option, and you would really miss not having it, eat your protein and veggies first and finish with the rice - like a half cup of rice. Something carby at the end of a meal helps you feel satisfied and is less likely to make you feel sleepy when the impact is lessened by other previously ingested foods.

I see that you live in Bahrain. i lived in Dubai for 5 yrs so I can understand the heat in those areas. it doesn't matter if you are indoors with the air conditioning, you still must have to go outside sometime or other. The fact that you live in a hot country will affect you and make you tired especially after lunchtime. My remedy was to get up bright and early and do what I needed to do that needed energy, then after lunch, I would have a nap or a rest for a couple of hours. I would feel so much better and could last out the rest of the day that way.
