Halloween: Playing Card Costume

Creative, crafty and inexpensive Halloween costume! Could not have cost more than $10 per person for all. My son and his friends decided they wanted to be playing cards for Halloween. Here is how we made it happen.

Supplies:

  • Deck of playing cards
  • Self adhesive foam core board
  • Nylon belt straps or wide strip of elastic or material, to staple to tops of boards for shoulder straps.
  • Glitter Glue

Instructions:

Cut foam core pieces to measure 16x20 inches each person needs two boards, one for front of card image. one for back. Enlarge front and back of playing card at local copy shop. We used Kinkos, and enlarged each individual card up to 11x16, the highest we could go for copyright issues. Then, centered the image on sticky side of foam board. Use spare cards to decorate the sides. The girls (as seen in photo) decorated foam crowns with glitter glue.

Appreciate Simple Pleasures

Remember when you learned to ride your first bike? Childhood memories are usually the simplest of things. Jumping in a pile of leaves in the fall, making mudpies, snowball fights, playing in the rain, chasing butterflies, gathering eggs in the hen house, playing "dress up" like mom, hunting with dad, turning the crank on the ice cream.

We all have memories of our childhood that are cherished in our hearts forever. It's not the things that cost the most money, it's the time spent with the ones we love the most that we'll always remember. Young parents of today should always try to spend quality time with their children. It's not what you buy them, but the memories you make together, that they'll look back on when they're grown. The simple pleasures that cost nothing, yet are priceless.

Halloween: Fall Fairy Costume

Supplies

  • Tutu (or fairy skirt, as my daughter calls them)
  • Tulle in fall colors. I used 6 inch rolls (15 yards/roll, 4 rolls total)
  • 1 inch ribbon in coordinating color (for waistband)
  • 2-3 coordinating colored curling ribbon
  • plastic sunflower
  • Fall themed wire garland.

Instructions

Measure child's waist and cut a ribbon 3x that measurement. Make a mark in the middle, this will be the center of the waistband. From that point, measure half the waist measurement on each side. Tie knots to mark end of waist.

Cut tulle strips twice the desired length. My daughter wears a 4T, and I used approx 30 strips of tulle to make her skirt. To attach to the waist band, fold tulle strip in half and form a loop under the ribbon. Pull the ends through the loop, forming a knot. Do this all the way to the knots on both sides of the ribbon/waistband. Once you have the desired fullness of the skirt, go back and double knot the strips of tulle.

Tie a few strands of curling ribbon around waist band for a little sparkle. Hot glue or sew (or pin!) a plastic sunflower to front waist. Skirt will tie around waist in the back.

Tip: I tie the ribbon around my thigh while tying the tulle. It keeps the ribbon in place and helps judge fullness.

For the headdress, we found orange with fall leaves at a dollar store. Any Halloween themed will do. Use the same curling ribbon and tulle as used in the skirt. Measure child's head and cut garland to size. Tie tulle and ribbons to the garland.

Wings can be made by shaping wire hangers or thin wire and covering with pantyhose. Or you can luck out like me and find them for $1 at the Dollar Tree! Pair with a dark shirt, tights and shoes!

Schmitten the Cat

Schmitten is 4 years and a Tuxedo cat. We found him outside a restaurant begging for food. It was below freezing, only four degrees. Of course, we took him home with us to be ours. He is always grateful. This was three years ago.

Schmitten plays with SugarPlum, our girl cat. He likes watching TV and is a fan of Kurt Douglas. Schmitten is a large cat, weighing in at 15 lbs. He's wonderfully spoiled.

Gracie (Jack Russell Terrier/Beagle)

Gracie is 10 months and a Jack Russell Terrier/Beagle. We found her on Petfinder and Craigslist. She and her siblings were in a shelter and they (plus other dogs) were due to be put down within the next few days. I heard through the grapevine that a rescue group was going to head there to get some of the dogs. The shelter is about 9 hours away from us. So, after many calls and three rescue groups, she is home, in her "Forever Home"! God obviously wanted her here because of all the craziness of 'getting here'.

She loves to play with her sister, Tessie. Play with her toys. Go to the dog park and play with her sisters and friends. Play with the laser. Gracie has been through two Obedience classes and has started agility. She really likes lure coursing. This year when we go to some competitions, I'm going to try her in racing and G2G. And she loves it all. Her little white tipped tail just goes nuts and she smiles.

Halloween Party Ideas

Our 11 year old daughter is hosting a Halloween Party this year for about 10 kids. We plan on wearing costumes, trick-or treating and watching movies But what would a Halloween Party be without some Tricks and Treats?

We will be serving some scary food: Apple bites (apple slices with almond teeth), bones and blood (refrigerator bread sticks shaped like bones and pizza dipping sauce), boogers on a stick (pretzel rods dipped in green tinted white chocolate), chocolate covered spiders (chow mein noodles mixed with melted chocolate morsels and dropped on waxed paper to harden), Vampire blood shakers (pink lemonade mixed with a shot of raspberry puree) and cupcakes decorated like bloodshot eyeballs and cat faces. And hot dogs, chips and dip for the faint of heart.

Prior to tick-or treating, the kids will do a scaredy cat scavenger hunt around our yard. Here are the clues which will be attached to beanie baby cats. The clues keep the kids in our yard and off the street for safety reasons.

As you go out on Halloween Eve, Watch out for the Bats and the Witches. For your first clue you'll have to look. At the back of the yard near the ditches! (near stream bed behind out house)

You've found the first clue. You are really quite bright! Look for the next clue under the closest Street Light! (street light in front of house)

Now scamper on down
To a bridge o're a stream
Watch out for the Ogre and
Try not to scream! (bridge over the stream behind our house)

This pumpkin not carved
And he is not glowing
Look near a tool that is
Used for lawn mowing! (near lawn mower in garage)

The crow is in the garden
The bats and Ghosts are set to fly
Look near the place
Where the growing pumpkins lie (pumpkin patch in back yard)

Now to pose for a picture
Put on your best face
Return to the Kitchen of
1910 Oriole Place! (Our house)

When they return from the scavenger hunt we'll take group pictures each party goer will receive a treat box filled with a few pieces of candy and a Halloween pin.

Post trick-or-treating (dad will tag along to make sure all goblins are kept safe, much to my daughters dismay!) we will watch not so scary movies (Clue, The Goonies) and eat popcorn hands and play flashlight tag in the back yard

A Dollar a Year for Birthdays

When I first married my husband, his parents introduced me to a system they have used for their children ever since their first birthdays. Especially now, since they are all grown and out of state. On each one's birthday, instead of sending a package (which with postage now would cost a fortune), they enclose with the birthday card a check in the amount of $1 for each year of the recipient's age.

I thought this was a great idea and started doing it for my own children and grandchildren. Granted, as they get older, it does tend to get expensive (the month of Oct alone for my in-laws this year cost them close to $200!

Luckily our kids and grand kids are more spread out through the year) But my 12 year old granddaughter commented to me this year that she loves the idea. But this way the person is able to use the money however they want. And no returned gifts!

Keeping Track of Medicines and Procedures

My husband has numerous medical problems. He is disabled and I work most of the time. The problem is remembering all the procedures and medications that he has had done and which medications he's taken. This can be overwhelming.

So what I did was start a small book every time I need to remember something I would write it into the book with the date and findings. I have put it all into the computer in a file marked medical history and put it on an icon for him. His medicine is now on a medicine file what he takes how often and the milligrams all this, is important. This too, is on an icon for easy access.

Now when he has a doctor appointment he prints them an update; keeping all his specialists informed. They are very impressed that he is so knowledgeable of what is going on with his health. This is helpful for any one with any kind of illness that requires long term care.

Back to School Sales for Stocking Stuffers

In July and August, when school supplies are on sale for very little money, I purchase a bunch of small crayon boxes, glue sticks, pencils, sharpeners, tablets, etc. I give each grandchild a supply for starting school and keep some for stocking stuffers at Christmas. By Christmas, they have used, lost or broken most of what was given to them at the beginning of school. When they go back to school from Christmas break, they have all new supplies for the second half of the year.

Cleaning Your Microwave

This is a great tip on how to clean your microwave without using chemicals. I found it on an online blog. So I tried it. And here are the results!

At first I was a little ashamed of how gross the inside of my microwave really was but it's sparkling now, so no judging me. The recipe was pretty simple:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or a few lemon slices for scent

Cook water in microwave until it boils for at least 30 seconds. For me that's about 4 minutes. Leave in microwave for about 15 minutes. Remove boiling water and wipe down ceiling of walls and microwave. Everything should wipe right off with minimal scrubbing.

Go try it! I know your microwave looks a little like mine, right?

Chicken Broth for Feline Urinary Health

About 15 years ago, my mother got a cat. After about 6 months, he got a severe case of urinary tract infection. The vet told her to give him low sodium chicken broth along with his medicine until he was over it. Because of the chicken broth, he would drink more water.

After he was well she decided to give him chicken broth every day. He never had urinary tract infection again. Mom (Margaret) and the cat both died last year.

Mom wrote this down with a note. "Can you believe how much money you can save, by not taking your cat to the vet for urinary tract infection all the time?"

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

A man visited a psychiatrist to talk about his dreams. "Every night," the man said, "I dream that these three hideous monsters are sitting on the edge of my bed, ready to attack me."

"Hmmm," said the doctor. "I feel sure I can cure you of this problem. But the treatment will be costly. I charge $200 per weekly session and it may take a couple of years to solve your problem."

"Two hundred dollars per session!" the man gasped.

"Never mind getting rid of the monsters, Doctor. I think I will give that bed to my mother-in-law. That will fix their wagon!"

Couch Seems Too Big for Room

I recently got a new sectional (my husband really wanted a sectional.) I have a great room which includes kitchen, dining room, and living room. I have no choice, but to place this sectional in the middle of open floor against no walls. Its back is to my kitchen dining area. Its front is facing two windows which have a entertainment center with the TV in between them. The only remaining wall, in the living area, to the left of the sectional has my computer desk and office area.

What can I do to make this couch fit in? I have burgundy carpet and the couch is khaki. Currently, my walls are white and my kitchen cabinets are white and I have white tile in the kitchen area. I considered painting the wall a beige color. I thought this might make the couch seem like it blends in and is not such a big couch. I really would like to call the furniture store and say this just isn't working, but my husband would blow a fuse.

Green Stains in Tub and Around Fixtures

I am having a very hard time with keeping stains away in the bathroom. It's a green color that keeps reappearing as soon as it dries where I have cleaned. It's in the bath tub and around the handles on the sink. I have used cleaning things from Lysol with bleach, Mr. Clean, and pure white vinegar. None of it seems to be working.

My husband and I are living in his grandmother's house to help keep up with housework and make sure it doesn't collapse. She is in a nursing home. I noticed that she used Comet on everything, one day. I wonder if it is stains from the Comet she never wiped up good enough. I'm tired of killing my arm scrubbing this stuff everyday and it just keeps coming back. What could I possibly use to keep it away?

Keeping a Car from Being Towed

Any creative ideas on how to keep our car from being towed? We drive the car six days a week, but park it in the street in front of our house (perfectly lawful, no problem in this neighborhood). One day the police put a sticker on it saying that it is "wrecked, inoperable, or has an expired tag" and they will tow it if they find it again.

It is operable, not wrecked, and has a 2010 tag on it! We have no other place to park it. We did call the police to say that we are still driving it, but they claim to have no records or information on it. There must be some creative way to show that a car is still in use or to discourage tow truck drivers from taking it! All suggestions are welcome!
