Jimmy Stewart and His Old Dog Beau

contest winner icon
In this short clip from an old Tonight Show, Jimmy Stewart read a poem he had written about the death of his dog, Beau. It really is wonderfully touching. Especially to those of us who are parents to our beloved pets. I've watched and listened to it about 10 times already and I still tear up every time. I've loved so many pets in my lifetime, and I know exactly what Mr. Stewart was talking about.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

MsMachado, I just wanted you to know that Jimmy Stewart was an animal rights advocate even though not for any one particular animal rights group :-)

"Animals give me more pleasure through the viewfinder of a camera than they ever did in the crosshairs of a gunsight. And after I've finished "shooting," my unharmed victims are still around for others to enjoy. I have developed a deep respect for animals. I consider them fellow living creatures with certain rights that should not be violated any more than those of humans." ~Jimmy Stewart

I remember watching that show when it originally aired (and again when it repeated), crying right along with Jimmy & Johnny, and wishing I could hear it again or find it written, back then they didn't have internet! Thanks for sharing, I'd forgotten about it & it was so nice to hear it again.

I wish I could share this with my mom, she still mourns the loss of her beloved German Shepherd, aptly named Beau & the poem suits him & their relationship as if it was written for them. He slept every night on her bed & was her constant, closest companion until she had to have him put to sleep. The vet came to her home to do it, so he died at home in her arms. She's never gotten over it or been able to talk about him without crying even after all these years.

A beautiful tribute by a man who could touch all our hearts. He should have been a spokesperson for all the Humane
Societies in our country. I'm betting he could have made a difference.
Thank you for sharing this Pookarina, even if it does make us all cry. I think we all know what Jimmy Stewart felt.

What a wonderful tribute to a true family friend. Beau may have crossed the "Rainbow Bridge" but will never be forgotten by his FAMILY.
