What is Double Digging?

Double digging is a soil cultivation process with three steps. The first is the removing of the top 6-8"of soil. Next, usually done with a pitchfork, is the aeration of the lower level. Finally, replace the removed soil with added organic matter. Double digging can greatly improve soil structure. Preparing the soil by systematically prepared the digging area to the depth of two shovels (2 ft.)
