Daily Thrifty Tips - October 10, 2008

Vol. 7, Num. 198, October 10, 2008 (Read It Online)

These are scary times. The market is in free fall, the housing market is struggling and consumer debt is sky high. Much of this is out of our control, but what we can control in our own budgets and spending habits. While we may not be looking at the next "Great Depression", there certainly will be tough times ahead. During these tough times, frugal living, becomes a requirement, rather than a choice, for more and more people. With that in mind, please continue sharing your tips and advice with the ThriftyFun community. Also, please consider posting a My Frugal Life essay. Your advice could be valuable to people in need.

Craft Project: Halloween Painted Jeans

Transform those old jeans/overalls/skirts, etc into Holiday Wear. With this EASY Project for lasting results of enjoyment. All you need is a scene of your choice (here I did The Peanuts Gang with Charlie Brown receiving his bag of rocks) a fabric item of your choice (100% cotton items work best) a few simple paint supplies some old news papers an plastic container with some water and an old rag for clean up of your brushes between painted drying times.

Approximate Time; 8 Hours

Supplies:

  • Fabric Item Of Choice (I used jeans)
  • Acrylic Paints
  • Paint Pens
  • Textile Medium
  • Assortment of Paint Brushes
  • Permanent Sharper
  • News Papers
  • Water In Container For Cleaning Brushes
  • Old Cloth For Drying Brushes Between Painting

Instructions

Step one is to lay out your fabric item and put old newspapers between the front and back of what your painting so the paint does not seep through to the other fabric. Look at a coloring book or a clip art picture for the scene you wish to create. Free hand the design to your item with a permanent sharpie marker. Any color acrylic paint you use, add 1 part paint to 2 parts of Textile Medium (this can be found in any craft store it transforms acrylic paints into a washable Fabric Paint). Begin with brushing on a coat of white paint to ALL areas of your scene, and let dry. This step will let you use less colored paints and will make your COLORS POP.

I stated 8 Hours for completion of this project it may be less, paints dry between each coat within an hour or two. After your ALL Over White Coat has dried you then brush on your other colors to each area, let dry. Then the last step is to use your FINE point paint markers or sharpie for outlining and finished details, just like you did in school when coloring. Let your finished fabric item dry for 24 hours, then heat set it by putting in the dryer for about 10-15 minutes. Always wash your item in cold water on the delicate cycle and do not use any bleach or bleach additives during washing. Then enjoy and receive lots of compliments.

When picking a theme as I did here, these items can be worn during the holidays. And in this case these will serve as your costume, I like to add a phrase to my item. In this case, the phrase "I Got A Rock" was written above Charlie Brown with a white paint pen.

Happy Halloween EveryOne!

Craft: Use Lace For A Subtle Pattern

I wanted a subtle pattern on the table that I painted and then thought of the idea that I used quite some time ago on a trunk. First I primed and painted the table a soft green and let it dry. Then I bought some lace with a large pattern and laid it over the top. I sprayed in a very soft gray. I also did the drawers. This matches very nicely with other things in my bedroom but, if you wanted to, you could make the contrast more extreme and it would also look good. I then put a coat of water based polyurethane on it.

Hailey The Cat

Hailey is 5 years old. She was born in a barn and someone found her.

She likes to chase anything with catnip in it. We decided to get a large can of tuna at our local Costco. I usually give Hailey the little tidbits at the bottom and I just had to take a picture of her with the giant warehouse can of tuna. She could fit her whole head in it!

Cherry Phosphate
By Claire Bush

Cherry phosphates are as American as apple pie - and this diner staple can be made at home, too. Try making a phosphate to spice up a burger and fries dinner.

Ingredients

  • 12 oz club soda
  • 2 tsp. cherry flavored syrup, such as Torani
  • 2 tsp. lemon juice, fresh or reconstituted
  • maraschino cherry, optional

Directions

Pour syrup into tall glass. Add club soda and lemon juice. Stir, add cherry and serve.

Note: Torani syrup is found in the coffee and tea aisle of most supermarkets for about $4 a bottle.

Craft: Bentwood Tables With Tile Tops

This was made out of bentwood. I used it as a BBQ table. It has a plywood top that is covered with broken tile. The tile can be found from a tile company. Most tile companies have scrap tile that is given away free like the one pictured.. The wood can be alder shown or other scrap wood. The pot I also re did with broken tile for they were just cheap clay pots.

Today's Tips:

Make a Keepsake of Old T-Shirts

My daughter had two old camp shirts. One was a tie-die and the other had the name of the camp. They were too small and had a couple of stains. After washing, I turned the tie-died one into a small pillow. I cut the camp name out of the other shirt. Before I stuffed the pillow I sewed on the camp name. Now my daughter has a wonderful keepsake of her camp time!

Replacing Canopy on a Lawn Swing

I have an old aluminum lawn swing which needed a new canopy. The cushions were easy to replace but I need a canopy. I went to a hardware store and bought a vinyl roll up shade (could be bamboo) and placed it over the top of the swing. I tied it down with plastic slip ties. It has lasted over three years now and is easy to keep clean.

Using Up Ripe Bananas

When possible, I buy bananas that the store is trying to get rid of for cheap, because they are spotted and turning brown. They are fine on the inside, maybe just not as firm as most people like. I freeze these, or bananas I've let get too ripe in my own kitchen. When I have lots of them, I slice into circles and freeze on several cookie sheets, which I've lined with saran wrap or waxed paper. They make the best smoothies or 'ice cream'. (That is just a very, very thick smoothie).

Bananas, peanut butter and a little chocolate syrup or carob powder go great together. I moisten as needed with rice, soy or cow's milk.

Pineapple, bananas and coconut extract, with any milk is another alternative. It is best to add a quarter cup of frozen pineapple juice concentrate, (without the water).

Halloween Gravestone Epitaphs

I came up with a series of silly epitaphs for tombstone shaped Halloween cards, but I thought other crafters might come up with other ways to use them.

1. I'm with stupid

2. If you can read this, you're too close

3. For a good time call...

4. Sam I am, I am Sam. I ate green eggs and ham, and now look where I am

5. Hey! Get off me!

6. Anybody get the number of that truck? Because I sure didn't!

Repurposing Cookie Tins

With the holidays approaching, its a great time to repurpose those cookie tins. Square and rectangular cookie tins (top and bottom) make great drawer organizers which can be very expensive when bought at the store. They can also be used in tool boxes, in art boxes, for crayons, and for other more "industrial" strength purposes where a regular box might not hold up.

Use Your Microwave to Sterilize Your Garden Pots and Soil

I am repotting a few plants and starting some new cuttings to give as holiday gifts. To make sure I am not bringing any insects or fungus into the new soil (new but stored in the garage), I fill the pots and microwave them for a few minutes until very hot, killing off any bad hitchhikers. I usually do this in the eve and then in the AM the soil is cool enough to plant in.

Start Stocking Your Pantry For The Holidays

Although it may seem too early to think about the Holidays, they are just around the corner. There are always special recipes and favorite foods that are only prepared for these holidays. For the most part, the ingredients are not things that are normally found in my pantry. And some items are expensive, but it wouldn't be the holiday, if I didn't prepare that special item. So, here is how I purchase these ingredients, yet save a little.

Starting in October, the big grocery stores start stocking items for Thanksgiving, as well as Christmas.I can't afford to purchase each ingredient right before I prepare the dish. Here is what I do :

Gather up your recipes that you KNOW you will be preparing, make a master list of those ingredients. Keep this master list in your purse, or in your clipped coupons.

Now, each time you go to the grocery, you can purchase a few of those special ingredients on your list. By purchasing a few each week, and putting them in the pantry, by the time the Holiday rolls around, most of the ingredients will already be in the pantry. By adding a few more dollars to my groceries each week, it won't break the budget.

Also, start looking in the Sunday newspaper advertisements for those great coupons for Holiday ingredients. Some of these things I only purchase at this time of the year. I use a white mailing envelope, write the name of the dish/recipe on the outside of the envelope. Write the main ingredients on the envelope too, you don't have to write exact amounts. Just the ingredients. If you find coupons that fit that recipe, put them in the envelope. Then when you shop, you know there are coupons for flour, spices or cake mixes. Some stores still double coupons on certain days. So you can get more for your coupon.

For instance, if I purchased everything to make Chex Mix at one time, it would be costly. But by buying a box or two, or the nuts, and pretzels a little bit along, it does not cost as much all at one time.

Also, magazines have lots of recipes and the coupons for an ingredient or two in the Fall Issues. Use these too. I have discovered that Wal-Mart usually has the lower price for some of the ingredients. Wal-Mart will honor the other grocery store's advertisement prices.

Happy Holidays!

Using Your Dried Lavender

Now is the time to harvest some of the stems on your lavender plant to dry out. Put it in a small satchel bag and add to sock drawers, pillow cases, make eye pillows or place a satchel in the dryer and for go dryer sheets one bag can be used over and over again. Saves money and smells really good, and the scent on cloths lasts longer than dryer sheets ever do.

House Training Cavalier Spaniel

I have an 18 month old male Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. He's still urinating on the carpet several times a month. We crate trained him, helped him mark his spots outside, offered food rewards early on and remained gentle throughout.

I work at home, so he is not left alone for long periods of time and goes out regularly. He is very loving, overall, but is a bit stubborn. He adores his older sister, a 3 year old Cavie, but they are very competitive for food, toys and affection at times. Help, I am at whits end about his house training problem.

Ground Cover Inside Dog Run

I have a German Shepherd who is an outside only dog. He injured his knee and I was told by a vet to keep him locked up to where he can't run. I made a 9 x 30 enclosed dog run to keep him in. I was wondering what kind of ground cover I could use?

I had shredded bark and shortly noticed it getting stuck between his toes so I took it out. I had the cedar bark and then noticed that when we urinated it would soak in and I had to replace it which ended in being too costly. I was going to put pea gravel but am afraid it would start to wear on his pads of his feet over time. Any suggestions? I am all out and don't know what else other than grass I can put in there.

Frugal Tips For Cruise Vacations

Hubby and I are celebrating our 25th anniversary by going on a Western Carribean cruise. I would like some general frugal tips from people who have gone on Royal Carribean Cruise Lines (or any line really). We are trying to do this budget friendly while still getting the most out of our trip. One big question I have is, all the off shore excursions through the cruise line are kind of pricey and I'm wondering if they are less expensive if I just go through the locals by taxi? For example, to go to the beach, just to relax, nothing else included, through the cruiseline is $29 for each person.

My frugal mind is saying there's got to be a less expensive way to do this. I'm also worried about the formal dinners. How dressed up is everyone? Travel agent says just a dress shirt, pants and a tie, then some people have said you need to be "black tie" in order to not feel out of place. We are very casual people and I really don't want to dress up if I don't have to. I have so many questions. I hope to get lots of advice. Thanks everyone!

Tips for Bringing Houseplants Back Indoors For The Winter
By Ellen Brown

The end of a summer vacation can come as a shock to some, especially to the tropical houseplants we put out on the deck and patio to reinvigorate over the summer. Once temperatures start to dip into the mid-40s (in some cases 50s), they start to risk becoming injured from the cold. Moving them from full sun and chilly nights spent outdoors to a dim and toasty room indoors can be quite a shock. Here's how to safely reintroduce them to life indoors for the winter.
