Garden: Yucca

I received a yucca plant in a flower arrangement when my daughter was born 30 years ago. I have, over the years, had many multiples from this plant. Easy, easy to root. Take off sprout, plant right in garden or pot. Grows beautiful. I have sold so many from people walking by for a good price.

The original does not go out in summer because it is to heavy and tall, 8 feet tall. Very easy and makes your indoor porch look very tropical. This all is so easy.

Craft: Bountiful Corn

This is great for even preschoolers. Pre-make the magnet with pipecleaners and raffia hot glued together. Add the tri-beads in any pattern desired. Simply bend the ends when the "corn" is full.

Jenny (Staffordshire Terrier)

Jenny is 5 years old and a Staffordshire Terrier. We rescued Jenny from someone who could no longer take care of her. She was 4 months old and had worms, the vet said one of the worst cases she had seen. Jenny also a bad leg when we got her from being mistreated.

Jenny loves to follow me out to the garden and take things out of my basket and run with it.

Jenny has had a good and healthy life until last year she blew her right knee. I had the surgery done and it wasn't done correctly so it was redone 1 1/2 months later. This is very painful and she has had a hard time with the two surgeries on the same knee. Just when she was doing well with the surgeries, she blew her left knee and had surgery and is recovering with it. She is a very loving dog and I am very happy to put her picture out there to share with others. She waits patiently for me in my garden.

Cow the Cat

Cow is a 9 year old cat. He was one of a litter from a stray cat.

He likes to play with his sister, Gabby, his step brother, Oliver, both cats, his friends- Molly and Indy who are dogs, and chase Cooper who is a bunny!

Cow likes boxes, and at no cost this box from Costco was a big hit. Cow's favorite place to sleep is on top of your head.

Today's Tips:

Spare Change Adds Up

I have been saving my husband's and my spare change for years. This year I decided to document every "cash-in", to see exactly how much change that we DID wind up with at the end of the year. I have always used this money for a rainy-day fund, like when I was absolutely out of money, needed gas for the car, or an unexpected item from the grocery store.

This year, I determined to earmark the money for a special project. so I started collecting in January, and planned to use the money for garden expenses. If I used any of the money in the jar, then I made note of how much was taken, and put a reminder to repay it in the jar.

This way, I was able to: 1. See how much money that I was able to save from just loose change, and 2. Keep up with how much was spent on my garden in a year's time. Since I knew that I was "saving" money, I often would give a dollar to pay for an item, instead of correct change. I knew that the small amount would not make a difference to my budget, but would help contribute to my garden fund.

As of this date, November 5, I have so far saved almost six hundred dollars in loose change, and spent $582.00 on my garden. I knew that the change collection was a big help, but now realize how much, since I started actually keeping track of "deposits and withdrawals". I was very pleased to learn what the actual figure was.

Easy Angel Wings

If you are handcrafting small angels for ornaments, here is a very easy way to make already wired, angel wings.

Simply buy a large, wide roll of glittered or un-glittered WIRED ribbon. Cut a piece of the ribbon off the roll. Cut through the middle of the ribbon in a scalloped way. All of a sudden you have two angel wings that can be shaped in anyway you wish, because of the wire. Just put the wire side up, cut to fit and hot glue it to your angel. Instant angel wings.

Use Press and Seal for Keeping Jigsaw Puzzles Together

I was talking to a lady about table puzzles. She said she likes to shellac them on the back, once she's got a puzzle put together. She said she used to have trouble turning over a completed puzzle, but she has finally conquered that problem.

She now uses "Glad Press 'n Seal" brand of food wrap for that. She tears off a piece of this brand of kitchen wrap, and places it over the completed puzzle. She then runs her finger on the wrap around the edges of the puzzle, thus making it stick to the puzzle. She is then able to turn the whole puzzle over, so she can put the shellac on the back.

Once the shellac is dry, she can remove the plastic wrap and her job if finished. For those interested in this, no other brand of kitchen wrap will work, like brand I mentioned above.

Link: Internet Drug Coupons Website

I want to tell you about a website I read about in the AARP called InternetDrugCoupons.com. It is a database of more than 300 drug coupons and freebies for people and pets. Even if you have good insurance, you have copays to pay. You are allowed to use the coupons for to pay your co-pay.

My family has a 15 dollar co-pay for preferred drugs and a 25 dollar co-pay for non-preferred drugs. I am on lipitor (a preferred drug) and my husband is on Nexium (a non-preferred drug). I used the site to get a reusable $15 coupon for my Lipitor and a $25 coupon for the Nexiums.

Between the two drug coupons I am saving $480 per year - $40 per month. This site is a great site - just like yours. People could save lots of money by using this site.

Use Credit Cards for Cleaning

Put all those credit card offers to good use. I have a place in my kitchen drawer to save the John Doe, or your name here plastic credit cards I get in the mail. I later use them for almost anything. Scraping teflon pans (you pay 2$ for a plastic tool), cleaning and scraping anything nasty, because you can throw it away when you are done. I have used them scrape hardened wax, remove excess foam insulation (the stuff in a can), scrape up built up fabric softener from the washer. The shape makes them perfect for getting into corners and tight spaces, and best of all they are free!

Use Christmas Plastic Tableclothes Instead of Tissue Paper

I love Christmas and I have large family and buy for everyone because I love Christmas. I use to spend hours wrapping presents then they invented Christmas bags (which I buy on after Christmas clearance), these bags however require lots of tissue paper for stuffing. A few Christmas' ago, I purchased a few of the plastic table cloths on clearance after Christmas for only 25 cents each at Wal Mart and I wondered what can I do with these. Well I decided I'd cut small ones into 4 equal sections and large ones into 8 or 10 and use them instead of tissue paper. It was great they are durable and come in great colors and I can even reuse them after Christmas for next Christmas. Last year I went to a dollar store in my local area and got these plastic table cloths for 10 cents each. This is an average of about 89 cents savings per gift on tissue sometimes more and I've even used these as stuffing for shipping packages another huge savings.

Rag Rugs for Draft Stoppers

Instead of spending money on cute little draft stoppers to place at the bottom of your doors, make your own. You can roll up a scatter rug for each door, and secure it with string or yarn. I have a collection of "rag" rugs that I use for this purpose. They are perfect, and easy to roll. When the draft stoppers are no longer needed, I cut the strings, wash the rugs, and save them for next year.

Brown Bag Microwave Popcorn

One of my friends suggested I try popping popcorn in a brown paper bag in the microwave for a healthier snack. I just tried it, and it worked great! Just put about 1/4 cup popcorn kernels into a brown paper lunch bag. Adding more will be a waste because the popped corn will start to burn. Fold over the top a few times, (don't staple, as some directions suggest), and pop in the microwave on high for about two minutes. Not only does it pop as healthy as air popped, but you don't have the maintenance of a contraption and the cost of popcorn kernels is significantly less than buying microwave popcorn. And you can re-use the paper bag to pop more popcorn.

Making Lasagna Affordable

I use coupons and sales to get all the ingredients for lasagna. Many times you can find big sales and use a dollar off coupon for sauces, and cheeses. I also get ground beef on sale and precook it on the weekends. Cooking this up on the weekend helps me save on heating my house on the weekend, and I pack it for my husband's lunches throughout the week and he saves on buying lunch.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

An American visiting in England asked at the hotel for the elevator. The porter looked a bit confused, but smiled when he realized what the man wanted. "You must mean the lift."

"No, if I ask for the elevator, I mean the elevator."

"Well, over here, we call them lifts."

"Now, you listen here. Someone in America invented the elevator."

"Oh, right you are, sir. But someone here in England invented the English language."

Question About Introductions

Don't know whether you accept questions on manners, but here goes: I am 78 yrs. old and attended a party in which the crowd was of mixed ages, another couple in their 70's, had a relative of ours come up and request us to go to their end of the table, they wanted to meet us. For the sake of peace we went but I feel it was their place to come up to us and introduce themselves or our relative bring them up to be introduced. Please let me know your feeling on it and if I I am right to be resentful, how else could I have handled it?

How Can I Keep Sheets on the Mattress?

I have a question on what to do with the twin size bed sheet sets. I have several sets that do not fit on the new mattresses. The mattresses are thicker and I have used the clips you use to keep the sheets from slipping off. The corners do not fit over the new mattresses, they slip off at night when you toss over. The sheets are for a smaller thickness of mattress. Any ideas on how to keep them on? Thanks for your ideas.

Potty Training a Puppy

My puppy won't go! I just got an 8-week-old puppy. I'm trying to potty train her using the wee-wee pads (we're in a high-rise apartment) and a crate. I've crate trained a dog before and have refreshed myself by reading up on all this.

I know what I'm supposed to do generally, but I'm worried because in the last 48 hours, she has only peed 3 times and pooped once. 2 accidents out of the 4 times, so not a bad average. But it does make it difficult to train her. And is this a health problem? Would love to hear any advice or experience about this.
