Today's Tips

Make Them Buckle Up

When people get in your auto, make sure they buckle up. If they don't do it automatically, remind them by saying to them, "My car won't start until everyone is buckled up. I love you and want you to do this for your safety."

It could save their lives if in an auto accident, (heaven forbid) and on your insurance if you are at fault. (Again Heaven forbid.)

Second rule, don't get in that accident. Slow down, be very alert, and stop to smell the coffee. .

Comfortable Seat Belt For Short People

I am a short person and when I buckle up, the seat belt cuts into my neck. I saw an ad for an item that would help the situation, it was $3.99. Being frugal I thought there must be something as good and less expensive.

I went to the dollar store and bought a package of medium length bungie cords. I put one end around the door pull, tied a knot about 1/3-1/2 way, hooked the hook through the center of the knot. That left the other hook which I can hook around the seat belt. It pulls it down and away from my neck making it more comfortable to wear.

Shopping Different Stores?

I use junk mail envelopes, make a list of items on the blank side and place my coupons I am going to use in that envelope. I do this for every store I intend to shop that day.

Then I take one of the big junk mail envelopes, place all the stores envelopes in it and they are separated so I can just take out that store's envelope and buy the items on my list for that store. Saves a lot of time.

If I don't know where items are, I ask an employee to mark the aisle number beside each item, therefore saving steps and energy.

Memory Tip

Hang small dry erase makers beside all the mirrors in your house and when you think of something that needs to be done or something that you need to buy, grab a pen and write it on a mirror! This helps with my memory problems!

Keeping Receipts For Returns

Keep a small coin purse in your purse and when you make a purchase put the receipt in the coin purse. You will always have your receipts with you if you need to return an item.

Honey for Bumps and Bruises

When your child falls and bumps his head or injures himself somehow, put a small amount of honey on the bump or bruise. The swelling will go down better and there won't be as much bruising.

Instead of Expensive Cleaners

You don't have to use expensive cleaners to clean your bathroom and kitchen. Bleach and water do an excellent job and bleach doesn't cost much.

Using the Amount on the Box or Bottle

When doing laundry, you only need to use about half the amount of soap that the box or bottle calls for to get your clothes clean. More soap can gunk up your washer and doesn't always rinse properly out of your clothes, leaving an unsightly build-up.

Gift Baskets for the Holidays

For the holidays we put together a basket of goodies for people. One might have garden tools with jam, cheese and crackers, while others might have some type of cookies. Maybe put in some kitchen scissors. Some of the things you can buy at the Dollar Store for this and get the baskets there as well. Another idea might have a bottle of wine with cheese, crackers, nuts, etc.. These make wonderful gifts. Enjoy the holidays.

Less Expensive Way To Line Drawers

I use paper towels to line my bathroom and kitchen drawers. When soiled, just toss them out and re-line again with another paper towel. They will absorb liquid in case something liquid gets spilled in the drawers.

Newspaper Bags

When it rains, our paperboy delivers the newspaper in a plastic bag. I save these bags for vacation time -- they are perfect to pack a pair of shoes in!

Using Borax Instead of Bleach

When washing whites, use borax rather than bleach to whiten. Bleach can cause yellowing if used a great deal and will eat holes in your clothes after a number of uses. I find Borax is a better whitening agent for the fabrics I wear.

Quick Breadsticks

For quick breadsticks take store bought refrigerator biscuits and roll them into little "snakes" dip each one into some melted butter that has about a tsp. of garlic powder in it if you wish (or leave this out). Line on cookie sheet so they touch side by side and bake, remove from oven then sprinkle with some parmesan cheese. These always get raves.

For a festive mood during December buy a white gel pen to address the green/red envelopes or cards and letters you send.

Price Tags and Sticker Removal

If price tags or stickers are stuck on something, heat the item with your hair dryer then peel it away.

Poison Ivy Treatment

If you come into contact with poison ivy use your hair dryer to blow on it to "itch" it without spreading it. Helps to dry it out quicker. Forget over the counter stuff, they don't work anyway.

Target and the Salvation Army

Hello! This is more of an opinion than a tip. I think it's terrible that Target stores will not let the Salvation Army bell ringers stand outside their stores this holiday season! They help many people. I for one will NOT be shopping at Target this season!

Compress Treatment for a Sty

My neighbors youngest son had a sty on his eye lid. A sty is a plugged-up oil gland or sweat pore on your eyelid. I remember what a doctor once recommended for my son and told them about it.

Place a compress, simply a clean cloth soaked in hot water. (Be careful and make sure it isn't too hot.) Place it over the sty and leave it there for about 10 minutes. Do this 4 or 5 times a day. This should open the blocked gland. If it doesn't recede after 3 or 4 days, You should go see your eyecare doctor. This method worked for the youngster.

The way to prevention is good old soap and water. This will reduce chances of developing a sty.

Saving Money on Long Distance Phone Fees

Tips for saving money on calling long distance. Post your ideas!

Saving Money on Long Distance

To save money on your long distance charges you can do a couple of different things. First of all, you could by long distance phone calling cards from stores, convenience stores, etc. They are usually cheaper per minute than using your house phone. The other option, which happens to be the one we chose, is to get a cell phone. You pay a certain amount for a certain number of minutes per month. It has been lot more economical than long distance from our home phone.

Using Alcohol Instead of Window Cleaner

Instead of buying expensive window cleaners I found rubbing alcohol works best. I fill up an empty squirt bottle from the dollar store with alcohol and start cleaning. It leaves windows, mirrors, and chrome streak free and clean (plus it costs a lot less!)

Frugal Beverages

What is your favorite inexpensive beverage?

Water Instead of Juice or Soda

Don't buy expensive soda and juice for your children. The sugar content in them is terrible! Water is still the best thing anyone can drink, and the most healthy and economical, and children can learn to like water very much, especially if taught at a young age.

By Robin

Frugal Beverages

Fill a small soda pop bottles with water and 1 tbsp. lemon juice or lime juice. Freeze. As they melt, they make great refreshing cool drinks. I still have to find out if cucumber water, with three slices of cucumber in it will freeze well. This is the most refreshing drink I have ever had. I also learned how to make v8 from this site and drink it for breakfast each morning, especially in the winter.

Removing Mildew Smell From Carpet

My carpet got wet from the A/C overfilling in my attic, and dripping down the wall on my son's bedroom carpet. We have managed to get the carpet mostly dry. We rented a commercial carpet cleaner, but still have the mildew smell. Any advice on how to remove this smell?

Composting Pine Needles

Please share your thoughts and "Do's and Don'ts" for composting pine needles. I have to circle the wagons and the troops and rake up all of them. I want to fill up the new 'wiz-bang' recycled plastics composter I purchased from the local landfill district office (It's about 42" high, and 4' across).

Thank you!

Living Green

I would like to see a section on Living Green, for the environmentalists in our group. Being involved in an anti-landfill project as well as being on the local earth day committee, I'd love to hear what other communities are doing to keep their air, water and earth a pristine place to live.

Lois Ann from New York

Editor's Note: That sounds like a great idea. If anyone else has any ideas for what type of information would be useful in a "Living Green" section, feel free to post them in the feedback forum below and we will see what we can put together.

Homemade Treats the Easy Way - Host a Christmas Cookie Swap!
By Cyndi Roberts

Do you love to give goodie bags or cookie trays full of homemade treats at Christmas? But do you get tired of all that baking?

A cookie swap may be the answer--you just invite several friends to make up their favorite recipes and get together and share! For example, if six of you bring six dozen cookies each, you will each take six dozen cookies home. But, instead of six dozen of the same cookie, you will have six different kinds of cookies.

The Five Best Gifts to Give Your Family
By Margaret Paul, Ph.D.

When we think of giving gifts, we usually think of things to buy for people. Yet if you think back on gifts you've been given, it might not be the material gifts you received that are foremost in your mind - it might be the kind of gifts that deeply touched your heart and soul. It might be various ways, other than material things, that people expressed their love to you.
