Craft Project: Native American Canoe

This is a simple craft, requiring very few supplies, that your kids might enjoy making to commemorate how Thanksgiving began.

Approximate Time: 20 minutes

Supplies:

  • brown construction paper
  • cardboard
  • pencil
  • scissors
  • "puff"paints, crayons or markers
  • stapler

Instructions:

Canoe1_300x225.jpgMake a cardboard canoe pattern in one of two ways - either the way shown in the photo, with two canoes connected at the bottom, or a single canoe shape.

Trace the pattern on brown paper - the double canoe is traced as it is, and the single canoe shape is traced on folded brown paper with the bottom of the canoe placed at the fold.

Decorate the canoe with "puff" paints, crayons or markers. The one in the photo I decorated with ordinary fabric paint. Make your decorations more authentic by looking up American Indian symbols at the library or on the internet.

Secure the sides of the canoe to each other with a stapler. If you made the double pattern, you will have to bring the sides up to meet each other first. The single canoe shape will already have the sides in line.

Craft: Wooden Rocking Horse

I have been busy in my woodshop again. I saw this pattern online and I just knew that I had to build it for my of my grandbabies. This is Savannah and I made this horse for her 2nd birthday. I think she really likes it. Now I think I will get back to work on building some small cedar chest for all 3 of my granddaughters. Hope you enjoy the photo.

Craft: Make Magnetic Fabric

I found this at Spensers Alley, a wonderful craft "mini mall" here in Salem, OR where I live.

You can get sheets of magnets, then peel off the back and adhere any fabric you like. This is older style mattress fabric they used for pillows and such called "ticking".

Then, you simply trace around the shape you want and cut with a heavy duty scissors.

This star is just one of hundreds of shapes you can make with cookie cutters. stencils, kid hand tracings, and things you see in craft and coloring books.

The nice thing is, you don't need glue and the whole thing is a magnet, so it keeps things down flatter, like kids school papers, permission slips, etc.

Enjoy!

Halloween Costumes At Work

Here are the people at my work that came in costume! Fun stuff! I'm on the end in the bowling ball costume, made from hula hoops and 13 gallon yard bags. Cheap and easy! (Just carry around a couple of bowling pins from a children's bowling set.)

Editor's Note: Sorry that this didn't get posted closer to Halloween. It got lost in the shuffle.

Pierre (Dalmatian Mix)

Pierre is 6 months old and a Dalmatian Mix. We rescued Pierre from Dallas City Animal Shelter in June 08. He was 3 months and very shy. Now he is outgoing and loves to play.

Pierre likes to play with other dogs and his toys. He was very easy to house train but not easy to keep him away from toilet paper, newspapers, shoes and sometimes moulding. Pierre is still growing into his ears! We think he may be part German Shepard.

Contests:

These contests are weekly. We pick 2 tip winners and 1 photo winner at the end of each week. Each winner will win $25!

Today's Tips:

Use Photos as Gift Tags at Christmas

I have a Christmas package tip to share: My niece, just turned 5, loves to pass out the gifts on Christmas morning at my house. Since she hasn't learned to read yet, I decided I would make it easier for her.

Instead of putting names on the packages, I put a picture of the recipient. She picks up a package and sees her pictures, she knows that one is hers. She gets a package with granddaddy's picture on it, she takes it to granddaddy. She loves it. I like to use funny pictures that I have taken through out the year and everyone gets a laugh from their picture.

It puts a few more laughs in the passing out and Rebekah feels like she is the master of ceremonies. It's fun. I printed as many pictures as I needed from the computer, this way it doesn't cost anything.

Collect Fallen Leaves for Thanksgiving Decorations

I like to take my children walking in our neighborhood. On our walks we find beautiful leaves and seed pods that have fallen from the trees. We collect them and take them home to use them as our Thanksgiving decorations. Bare twigs and seed pods are added in our fall bouquets or as part of our Thanksgiving centerpiece. We also tape large brightly colored leaves all over on our walls, which simulates the outdoor fall season. I also draw large leaves on water color paper and have had my children paint and decorate them for use as name place cards for our Thanksgiving Dinner.

Set Up a Holiday Craft Station for Kids

With the holidays coming, and children needing things to do, set up a craft station nearby that has all the needed craft supplies that the kids can make something easy, to take with them. A place mat, door hanger for their room, or just a collage. You will need a small kid's table, scissors, glue sticks, markers, crayons, bells, stickers, confetti, small scrapbooking cutouts, construction paper, cardboard, plastic lacing, papertowel tubes, and anything else that would spark creativity. Alternate with another adult in manning the post for a decided amount of time. This way the kids and the adults have a creative and fun time, instead of just sitting in front of the TV.

Link: RetailMeNot.com For Discounts

When shopping online, always check http://www.retailmenot.com/ before paying. You can usually find codes for free shipping, or a percentage off of the item. Just type in the company name you are shopping from in the Retail me not search bar and see what they have. I use it all the time and it has saved me a great deal of money I would have otherwise "given away"! I even saved over $200 for airline tickets at American Airlines with this site. Try it and save!

Buy Stainless or Titanium Eyewear to Avoid Nickle Allergies

If your eyewear turns green, only buy STAINLESS STEEL or TITANIUM frames. Your system does not like nickel metal which is present in a lot of eyewear. If the inside of your temples (arm pieces) is rough and corroded, same thing, the contact with your skin is making the coating come off and exposing bare metal to your skin, which can cause a rash similar to poison ivy. Your eyecare professional can guide you to the Stainless Steel and Titanium frames. Believe me,if your ear lobes get sore from CHEAP earrings and your wrist watch makes your wrist green, you're allergic to nickel.

Write a List of Medical Concerns Before Going to the Doctor

I find that when I go the doctor, I always forget to tell the doctor about all the medical problem problems that I am having. Here is my solution. I write down a list of problems (if I have dates and frequency that is even better), and then hand the list to the doctor. That way I am covered, and I can have all my problems taken care of.

Use a Potato as Window Cleaner

My mother taught us to cut a potato, so we could rub the starch onto the window pane. Three reasons why this is a good method:

  • You can tell if the window has actually been wiped; there will be white starch if you didn't get it all. It will turn black if you leave it on long enough.
  • The starch traps in the grime, you don't have to worry about having to clean the sill because all the grime dripped from above.
  • The starch is friendly to those who have allergies to cleaning fluids because of the scent or of skin irritations.

Save Energy Using Night Lights

I purchased white night lights that have an on/off switch from the dollar store, for all over our house. We find they put out plenty of light. For example in the bathroom, the light is fine to use the bathroom, brush our teeth, get dressed, etc. We then switch them off and use the brighter lights as necessary for combing hair, applying makeup, etc. Another example is in larger rooms, someone reading may use a brighter light to read by, and you could use a night light on the other side of the room where someone is watching TV or just relaxing.

Recharge Ball Air Fresheners

Don't throw out the air fresheners that are in a clear roundish plastic jar with vented lids that have colored scented round balls inside after the balls shrink and are seemingly dried up. Add a little water and allow to sit awhile and the balls will soak up the water and return to normal size! They still smell good too but you could also add a little liquid potpourri or extract or perfume.

Thawing Your Turkey

If you are space limited in your frig to thaw out the turkey ahead of time, use a cooler. Make sure the cooler is sterilized, fill with cold water, and pop (plop) the frozen turkey into the water. Store in your cool garage or another cooler location, and it will be out of the way, and ready to go on Turkey day!

Sometimes, I've done this and there is still ice on the inside of the turkey. This also works well when brining a turkey ahead of time.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

A minister was planning a wedding at the close of the Sunday morning service.

After the benediction he had planned to call the couple down to be married for a brief ceremony before the congregation.

For the life of him, he couldn't think of the names of those who were to be married.

"Will those wanting to get married please come to the front?" he requested.

Immediately, eleven single ladies, nine widows, two widowers, and one single man stepped to the front.

Cleaning Crayon Out of a Dryer

We have now joined the ranks of people with the dreaded problem of removing melted crayon from the clothes dryer. After my brief crying spell, we were able to devise a removal plan based on other people's suggestions on ThriftyFun. Here are the steps we used to remove the crayon:

  • Run the dryer for 15 minutes to heat up the crayon.

  • Sprinkle Comet on a wet sponge and gently rub the crayon spots. (Rubbing to hard will damage the enamel coating!)

  • A toothbrush dipping into a comet and water paste worked well for the cracks and crevices. (It is important to clean the crevices so that crayon wax doesn't seep out when running future loads of laundry!)

  • Once you have removed the crayon with the Comet use a damp rag to wipe out the Comet and crayon residue.

  • If there is still crayon left after doing this, run the dryer again for 15 minutes and repeat the above cleaning process until all the wax has been removed...DO NOT run the dryer with any cleaner still inside!

  • Finally, to "test" whether it is completely clean, run a few clean white rags through a drying cycle and inspect them for crayon marks! If there aren't any you loads of good clothes should be safe!

I have included some before and after pictures of my dryer...to give you the hope and encouragement you might need to tackle your disaster! Good Luck!

My Dog Died Suddenly

My Shih-tzu of 8 yrs, one morning sounded like she was gagging or ready to vomit. I suspected she was going to vomit, because she made that choking sound when she did. She was on my bed when I heard her and told her to go outside. I followed her to the door and there she collapsed.

I lifted her up and she had her tongue out, so I started to give her CPR, and then she peed maybe less than a minute later. I don't know what happened to her. Has anyone had the same experience? Do you think she had a heart attack? I miss her so much. xoxx

Dog is Licking It's Hair Off

We have a female hound-husky mix. She is 1 year old and seems to have serious nervous problems! These problems seem to have started shortly after having her spade when she was 6 months old. I asked the Dr. if there could be any side affects from the surgery and she said no. She began by not listening to direct commands that she had done great before such as sit and stay.

About 3 months ago she licked her tail and a lot of the hair was gone. We took her to the vet and she said that there was no evidence of mites/fleas etc. It hadn't happened again until a couple of days ago, but this time she has licked most of the hair off her tail, paw and forearm! She has vomited a few times in the past week too. I'm just a mess worried about it. I'm taking her to the vet today. Any advice from anyone would be greatly appreciated, or just someone that understands!
