Craft: Straw Hat Snowman

Here are some snowmen made from small and larger straw hats.

Approximate Time: 30 minutes

Supplies:

  • straw hats
  • acrylic paints
  • pom poms
  • ribbon
  • pipe cleaners
  • white spray paint
  • hot glue and gun

Instructions:

Spray paint hats white or you can paint with brush and acrylic paint. Let dry. Paint on the faces. Take a smaller hat and cut in half and paint, then glue on top of big hat to make the snowman a hat. Glue on your pom poms for ear muffs. You can add pipe cleaner over top to look like the string for the ear muffs. Glue on ribbon.

Valentine Cookie Bouquet

A cookie bouquet is very easy and thrifty to make yourself if you're looking for a special gift. You can order them online or at a bakery, but are extremely expensive. They range in price from $24.99 - $59.99 or higher.

The bouquet pictured has 8 Valentine Day Cookies neatly arranged in a large mug. I still have to wrap it in cellophane and tie it at the top with a fancy ribbon. I donated it to our senior citizen's group in February to be used as one of the door prizes. I used the Strawberry Valentine Cookie recipe, then used the decorating sprinkles.

Grow Cuttings To Give Away

There are many plants that let you take cutting to start new plants. Why not start some in "give-a-way pots". I have several transplants waiting for the right person. They are great for "Welcome to the neighborhood", "Hope you're feeling better", "Have a SMILE", "Cheer up". Great for yard sales or plant swaps, etc.

Also good if you have too many, call your city hall and ask if they need them for the parks and recreation dept. Some places will come and get them and put in landscaping all over town.

Buddy The Dog

Buddy came to us as a stray. The vet said he had a crushed larynx, probably from a collar or choke chain. She said to use a harness instead. Since he is a runaway dog, that's what we do.

Most dogs and cats like back rubs/massages. I look for used baby receiving blankets at yard sales and flea markets. I wash them well and warm them in the dryer on chilly days (Terry towels just takes 20-30 seconds in the microwave also). Then I wrap up Buddy and massage his spine with a circular motion. He loves it. My mom had just finished giving my cat, ZsaZsa a back rub. She got so tickled. Mom passed away in 1999, but I still have fond memories through pictures such as this one. Here are a couple of Buddy being SPOILED after what we think was a hard life before coming to us.

Contests:

These contests are weekly. We pick 2 tip winners and 1 photo winner at the end of each week. Each winner will win $25!

Today's Tips:

Use Glass Etching on Badly Worn Shower Door

I bought a fixer upper home and it has a shower that was etched so bad with hard water spots. (SO bad that a steel wool pad and a drill with chemicals did not do the trick). I didn't want to replace the glass, had lots more money to spend on other things. So I went to a craft store and bought glass frost/etching acid. I bought a roll of painter's tape and stencils. Figured out a pattern that I wanted.

I put a "Fleur D'Lis" on the top of each glass pane, with the stencil that I bought (could be butterflies, flowers, etc.) and ran the tape along the edges of the glass panes (length wise). Then I striped the glass with the tape (horizontally), measured with little pieces of the tape below the fleur d'lis design and ran a piece of tape from edge to edge, using the little pieces of tape as guide to make the stripe level. Then more small pieces of tape at the bottom of the first stripe of tape then leveled off another stripe.

Standing in the shower, adjust the tape and stripe pattern so the personal parts of your body are covered by the frosted glass. I etched the entire part of the glass where the "never-you-mind" areas are, then I started striping again to continue the pattern from the top of the shower glass panes. In the middle of the glass pane, I etched another design but I had to tape that off to not overlap the frosting, which was a pain in the never minds, but it came out good.

You might want to try it. I saved myself a bunch of money and it doesn't look too bad for a cheap quick fix. Now I can concentrate on other things to buy for my new...older...home, and this will do until I can get another shower stall along with a water softener system! Good Luck. I am very happy with the outcome and semi-filled bank account.

Esprit Cabane - French Craft Site

While surfing the net I ran into a charming French craft site called esprit cabane. It's French - but the pix are so good I think you can get inspired by it. Lots of recycled crafts - including ones using cut up recycled soda cans. I like the one where they cut out the letters and then used them for funky signs.

Add Acid When Making Stock

When boiling meat bones for stock, add 2 tablespoons of either vinegar or lemon juice to the cooking water. The acidity helps dissolve the gristly tendons into collagen and gelatin, which makes the broth more nutritious. If it's too sour after cooking, add a pinch of baking soda to neutralize the acid.

Electrolytic Method For Cleaning Silver

The easiest way to clean your silver is by the electrolytic method. Boil a quart of water in a non-aluminum pot. adds a Tbsp. or two of baking soda and a Tbsp. of salt. Put a 4 inch piece of aluminum or a crumpled ball into the pot. Put each piece of silver in separately. DO NOT STACK. The tarnish collects on the foil (and any silver that's sticking out of the water) Remove pieces with tongs after 5 minutes

Use Clothes Pins for Chip Clips

Instead of spending any money at all on those cutesy little clips for closing potato chip bags and other bags, I use plain ol' clothespins, the kind with a spring. I've even been known to spray paint 'em in bright colors if they're going to be in plain sight. You probably already have a clothespin-bag full of them at home. :)

Freeze Gum or Wax to Clean Off Cloth

To remove chewing gum or candle wax from a tablecloth, a couch, or carpeting, gently rub the gum or wax with Ziplock bag filled with ice cubes until the substance hardens. Shatter gum with a blunt object, then vacuum up the chips. Carefully peel off frozen wax with a plastic spatula.

Mix Cinnamon And Mint Mouthwash

I bought a cinnamon mouthwash thinking I would like it but didn't. I ended up adding some it to my liquid hand soap. I also added some of it to my mint mouthwash to mask the bitter taste and use it so it wouldn't go to waste. It turned the mouthwash purple of course (which was interesting to look at) and helped the taste considerably!

Add Red Pepper To Your Bird Seed To Deter Squirrels

As an avid birdwatcher, I do not enjoy watching the abundant squirrels devour all my bird feed. Not many birds came even though I refilled the birdhouse countless times. Thankfully I once heard that squirrels HATE red pepper. I mixed about one Tbsp. of red pepper with my bird seed, and the pesky squirrels did not return. The birds are not bothered by the pepper, and it saves a lot of money on buying tons of birdseed, only to come to squirrels eating it.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

Before Linda became engaged, she was quite the beauty, and didn't mind letting her boyfriend know it, too:

"A lot of men are gonna be totally miserable when I marry." she told him.

"Really?" asked the boyfriend, "And just how many men are you intending to marry?"

Help Selecting a Chair and Rug Color for Living Room

I am looking for some design/color advice. I have a living room (beige carpet), a navy blue leather sectional and a light pine colored entertainment center. Unfortunately, its a rental so I cannot paint the walls but I'm having a hard time figuring out which color chair/rug to go with everything. I'm shying away from a navy blue chair because I think it may darken the room a bit too much.

Le Creuset Pan Vs. Chantal Pan

My mother used to make the nicest grilled cheese sandwiches in a Le Creuset frying pan (enamel coating with iron). Those are quite heavy. I recently purchased a Chantal skillet (enamel coating with carbon steel)and am wondering if anyone has found a difference between the two products. Or possibly they are so different that I am going to have to replace it with the exact pan my mother used.

Finding Good Coupon Savings

Where are Good Coupons? I've searched the recommended sites but nearly all the coupons are for foods that are too expensive anyway, etc. boxed and prepared foods. And cleaning supplies I never purchase. I use the ole standbys vinegar, baking soda, bleach, etc. I NEVER buy special cleaning products. I seldom purchase dry ceral even with a coupon it's still higher than oatmeal, cream of wheat, etc.

There are NO stores in my town that double or triple coupons. I need coupons for coffee, dairy products, produce, meat, etc. On occasion I find one for yogurt and a 25 cent coupon on Folger's coffee but that's about it. I've tried the Dollar Stores to save but here, they are not any cheaper than the grocery stores and sometimes higher. I buy reduced to clear meat. I wish other readers could tell me how they save using coupons; I'm still not convinced there is a savings.
