Give Extras from the Garden to Your Local Food Pantry

I have just discovered a gardener's greatest harvest! Our local food pantry is now set up to accept fresh fruits and vegetables all year round, which means any harvest I have that I can't use automatically has a distribution point to be taken to for the benefit of others. No gardener likes to see the bounty he can't use from his garden go to waste. My local food pantry only asks that I knock off as much loose dirt as possible along with the bugs ~ they will do the dividing, bagging, etc., and then deliver to them between 8 and 9 a.m. (distribution to recipients begins at 9 a.m.). What a joy to know that even my extra's from the garden will be put to good use!

If you find yourself inundated with too much produce from your container vegetable plants, find the telephone number of your nearest food pantry and ask if they are equipped to accept fresh produce and fruit for distribution to others in need. For example, anything less than a baseball bat sized zucchini is more than welcomed at our local food pantry right now. The same for all produce and especially farm fresh eggs. They don't have to be candled but do have to be clean and packed in an egg carton.

GOD BLESS YOU FOR SHARING YOUR BOUNTY

In early spring seed companies, at least in the Pacific N.W. give out a free packet of seeds so you can plant for the hungry. I do this every year and the food banks never turn down fresh foods. They even accept basil and parsley if you give them enough to share.
