Garden: Pumpkin Planter

Since its coming up for Halloween, I thought after making my soup I'd put my pumpkin to good use. With some of my summer plants gone, I think this adds a bit of colour.

Halloween Moon Ghost

I tried to take a photo of the most awesome looking moon tonight through the trees but couldn't capture it the way I wanted to :-( Emailed it to a friend even though I was disappointed and he said, "You tried to take a picture of the moon but a ghost got in the way" ;-)

Guess it was the timely Halloween Moon Ghost stepping in ;-)

Skippy at 4 (Jack Russell Terrier)

Skippy is a 4 year old Jack Russell Terrier. My husband brought her home along with our other jack after our oldest dog passed away.

Skippy loves to play with her sister Tuffy, wrestling and tumbling. She loves to nuzzle her little hedgehog, squeaky toy.

She loves our two cats and cannot wait to take walks in the field with them and her sister. They have a special playtime when we all walk in the field.

Use Dried Greenery In Your Fall/Winter Displays

Although the outdoor flowers are dying, you can still use lots of garden items for decoration, inside and out! I like to make fall and winter arrangements in antique milk jugs that I got from auctions of relatives. In one, I have just filled with corkscrew willow. The dried leaves just come right off when you run your hand across it. In the other, I have filled with a type of tall grass and dried hydrangeas.

Then in December I will cut fresh evergreen from the tress and fill in around the milk jugs. It looks beautiful and is welcoming to your guests. You can also use the dried flowers in your house, as I have done with the hydrangeas in a vase. I also use pussy willow in a vase, it is gorgeous and just stays pretty like it is since it is dried. I also love to bring in some of the fresh cut evergreen for Christmas decorating.

Today's Tips:

Glue "Legs" on Your Laptop for Airflow

Hot glue things, such as a row of pencils or a medium size bead (like beaded car seats are made of) or clothespins or any other thing, to each corner of the underneath side of your laptop to give way to circulation. It can be cool rather than buying a product made especially to do the same thing. You wouldn't even have to go so far as to glue it - you could cut a sponge in 4 pieces and sit the laptop on it or to use it over and over. Attach with velcro if you feel it isn't secure enough for you.

Decorate Cheap Christmas Stockings

If you need Christmas stockings because you missed out on last year's after Christmas sales, you can make really fun ones without sewing and for a little cost. Just buy the cheapest red felt stockings you can find (try drug and discount stores) and sheets of felt at a craft store. Cut out shapes from the felt and glue! Last year I did stars, old-fashioned Christmas bulbs, a spotted dog with red bow, ringing bells, a Christmas tree, a snowman, snowflakes, polka-dots, mistletoe...all were very simple die-cut-like cut-outs and colorful, and they looked fantastic and unique hanging in front of the fireplace. For an extra fun flair, use non-traditional Christmas colors and shapes to glue onto the stockings - like pastel polka dots, stripes or spirals.

Creepy Halloween Bugs

Every year I buy those little sponge creatures that grow when you put them in water from Walgreens like spiders, creepy bugs and things like that. About 2 weeks before Halloween, I fill those big pretzel containers with water and food coloring and then line them all along the sidewalk. For an eerie look, I put patio candles behind them to really illuminate them. I even had some little kids get too scared to come up the walk... lol

Plant Grass Seed after the Snow Flies

I noticed that several gardening centers around here marked their grass seed to 50% or more off. This is a good time to buy it on sale. However if you live in a part of the country that gets snow, don't plant it yet. Wait until it starts snowing, then throw down your seed. The snow protects it from the birds eating it, and as the snow later melts off. The weight of the snow and the movement of the melting will cause the seed to be pulled into the ground. In the spring you will have a nice patch of new grass coming up.

Controlling Ant Central

We live in an area that is ANT CENTRAL. The house had been invaded time after time and never just a few but armies of them. The problem was growing! I finally did have a pest company begin a regular schedule of spraying but it has taken about two years to actually get them under control. They had built a thriving metropolis under the cement pad the house was built upon. They could move throughout the house through the walls by coming up through the cracks in the cement pad. Along with the spraying, the pest company also put down granules and a syringe filled with a clear gel that ants love, then take it back to the nest thus killing vast numbers of ants.

As I said, it has taken 2 years to get control and I probably can't risk stopping pest service. At least the home invasions have stopped. If you're not fighting an army, you might try peppermint oil mixed with some water and Murphy's Oil soap to spray along your outside foundation.

Storing Food While Traveling

When traveling, I make sure I bring along a variety of ziplocks, rubber bands and various sized twist-ties. These come in very handy for saving left-over snacks and other food, such as restaurant remnants. Ideally, I have along an ice chest for perishables.

Buy Mulch Now For Next Year

If you garden, buy mulch now! All the garden centers and other stores that sell mulch in bulk bags, have them on super sale right now. I just bought 5 bags (1.5 cubic feet each) of mulch for only $5! It's usually $2.79 a bag, so this is close to be only a third of retail. Yay, me!

Eat A Leaf Of Poison Ivy To Prevent Reactions

I must share something that has helped me tremendously. An elderly neighbor told me how to get rid of poison ivy, of which I had known the horrors of. She said to me, the old timers would pick a leaf of the plant each spring and eat it. I now pick a small leaf and eat it each spring, and I can pick wild blackberries with my hands all in the poison ivy and never have a reaction. Most folks are scared of this when I tell them, but blessed be my neighbor, it works for me.

By Rexe from Junction City, Arkansas

Editor's Note: Warning! Eating poison ivy can be very dangerous and can cause shock and severe breathing problems. Advice similar to Rexe's can be found all over the internet and in some cases, this may be an effective way to increase your immunity to poison ivy. But I would strongly recommend against trying this approach.

Using Free Shower Caps for Bowl Covers

I keep the free shower caps at hotels and sometimes the maids will give you a few extra. I also buy hair perm caps at a salvage store. I use these to cover bowls for leftovers instead of buying the bowl covers at the store.

Source: I came up with this one my self because I was out of handy wrap and I remembered the shower caps. It worked great.

Hamster Isn't Very Active

We received a 1 yr old hamster about 1 week ago, and he was very active. He got out of his cage one night and now sleeps a lot. He does not run like he used to when in his ball, and does not run between his cages like he did before (we have 2 cages connected).

Yet, he is still active when we hold him. We have no other animals (cat, dog, etc.) so I know that nothing got hold of him. What could cause a hamster to not be as active as he used to be?

Smoke Odor From Cooking

I cooked a pot of yellow-eyed beans. They simmered down to no liquid and a horrible odorous smoke filled the house, mostly the main level. My fire alarms never activated. I was outside and unaware the house was filled with smoke. I have stripped all curtains, slipcovers and washed them. I have wiped surfaces down with a Zep product that says it's for smoke neutralizing.

I changed the air return filters. But it still smells like a bar in the house. You can even get a whiff of it when you get to the porch. Any ideas that aren't too expensive? I'm at my wits end with this!

Tips For Raking Up Fallen Leaves
By Ellen Brown

Part of keeping your lawn and garden healthy means that most of the accumulated debris, including fallen leaves, should be removed in the fall. Raking is still the most environmentally friendly option for removing fallen leaves, and the best way to get some exercise (the average person burns approximately 283 calories per hour raking leaves). Rakes are cheap, quiet, and they don't contribute to global warming. Here are some tips for making raking the lawn easier and more enjoyable.

Arm yourself with a good rake (and a good pair of leather gloves). A "clog-free" ergonomic rake with bent handles will put less stress on your shoulders and back because it helps you rake without bending over and leaves don't get stuck on the tines. There are also rakes with adjustable metal tines for reaching narrow areas like garden beds and in between plants, or rakes with wide fans to cover lots of lawn with each sweep. Make sure that the rake you choose has a comfort grip handle to reduce fatigue and prevent blisters from developing on your hands.

"Scrakes" are rakes designed to make detaching easier. In lieu of tine, scrakes have sharp, metal blades that cut through the thatch and help pull it to the surface. If you don't have a scrake, raking your lawn hard will work just as well. In fact, for thin layers of thatch (1/2 to an inch) using a rake is actually less damaging to your grass.

Not all leaves need to be raked up. Leaves left under trees and shrubs will provide winter protection and compost themselves. This means you'll need to use less mulch under trees and shrubs next spring.

For many people, raking and back-aches go hand in hand because suddenly you're using muscles you seldom use in your day-to-day activities. To help prevent back injuries, avoid standing in one spot while you rake. Instead, move your feet as you bend and twist. Try not to twist the trunk of your body as you rake. Instead, rake leaves straight back and move with the rake as you walk backwards. Switch hands often, take frequent brakes and drink plenty of water while you rake.
For easy bagging, rake leaves on to a small tarp. When the tarp is full, simply roll it up like a cigarette, stand the tarp on end, and funnel the leaves into a waiting bag.

The preferred way to dispose of fallen leaves is to compost them, or use them as mulch around landscape plants. To make leaf mold, simply collect fallen leaves, soak them in water if they are dry, then pile them in a corner of the garden and let them decompose. Rough, one year-old leaf mold makes a great mulch. After two years, leaf mold can be used as a soil amendment.

Lastly, if you have a small yard with only a modest amount of leaves, consider taking several passes over fallen leaves with your lawn mower. A thin layer of finely chopped leaves on the lawn will serve as a light protective mulch and will quickly be devoured by hungry worms.
