Daily Thrifty Tips - March 20, 2006

Volume Five, Number 54, March 20, 2006
http://www.ThriftyFun.com

Hello,

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. Here are the results to last Friday's poll:

Have you ever made your own beauty recipes?
Yes (59) 49%
No (62) 51%

We have a new poll today about HDTVs.

Post your answer:
http://www.thriftyfun.com/tf31303769.tip.html

We have started adding pet guides to the website, you can find the first few that we have added in the More Reading section of this newsletter. We have so many different dog breeds posted on the site that we felt it would be interesting to have a page about each dog breed. I hope you enjoy them, I know we will have a lot of fun putting them up. Ellen Brown, who also wrote the Gardening Guides, put these together for us.

Thanks for reading,

Susan

Annie (Siamese Tabby Mix)

Annie is a 6 month old Siamese Tabby Mix. I got her when she was 8 weeks old. My Fiance got her for my birthday. She loves to be around people and loves to play with coat strings and her cat toys.

She has an obsession with suckling on fingers. I think she was taken away from her mother to soon.

Today's Tips

Handy Plastic Silverware

I keep a plastic spoon on my spoon rest on my stove for tasting purposes. I also keep a plastic knife in my large Country Crock margarine tub so it can be used at anytime; this eliminates a dirty knife when you need a margarine; just wash the plastic knife off and put it back into the tub and close the lid.
This tip makes my cooking a lot easier!

Minor Repairs

You CAN do minor repairs on leather and faux leather goods, especially if you have the stitching holes already - just re-sew with thread (doubled or heavy duty) by hand.

I ALSO replaced a missing magnetic latch on a lovely teal thrift store backpack bag (Espirit) I got for $1 - by putting black self-stick Velcro on the flat round part of the magnetic clasp that was left on the bag, and a corresponding strip on the latch, which I secured with some stitching.

It's lovely now and for a total outlay of $2 (with lots of Velcro left over.)

Washing Delicate Crystal or China

If you are washing delicate dishes in your sink, line the bottom of the link with a bath towel before filling it. This will protect your crystal and china from getting chipped on the hard sink bottom.

Storing Bedding, Clothing and Soft Toys

This is a great idea to store all your bedding, clothes the kids have not grown into, teddy bears, material your too busy to sew up, and seasonal clothes. Well, anything soft you aren't using often. Simply take your garbage bags fill them as full as you can but still able to gather the top together. Put your vacuum attachment into the opening close the top around it. Hold it tightly turn on your vacuum and watch it shrink to about 1/4 of the size. Get the heaviest bags you can get, maybe garden bags. I'm going to get some super heavy bags from a janitor supply store. Well, happy storage.

Homemade Face Paint

My kids absolutely love this recipe, they help mix it and them paint away on their face!

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp. cornstarch
  • 1/2 tsp. warm water
  • 1-1/2 tsp. cold cream (any brand)
  • a few drops of food coloring

Directions

Mix all the ingredients in a paper cup/bowl. And if the mix is too thick you can add a few drops more water. You can paint with your fingers or a paint brush.

Removing Rust from Saw Blades

First cut some wood with it, to remove loose rust and dirt. Then scrub it with one of those plastic abrasive kitchen foam pads. Don't use the ones that have uniform small airholes, but the ones that have irregular size holes like a natural sponge and a green or blue abrasive pad on one side.

Instead of water, use CocaCola or Naval Jelly. The phosphoric acid in those will convert the iron oxide into iron phospate. Iron phosphate is a final stage salt. It can't oxidize any further and will always stay the same.

You can use Naval Jelly on anything from key files to aircraft carriers. It also works great on camper tie-down chains, that get beat up by road salt and sand.

Look for Naval Jelly at Ace hardware, not in the jam section in the grocery store. It's NOT something the boys and girls in the navy smear on their toast.

Have FUN!

What Type of Plant Is This?

Does anyone know what the name of this plant is? It was from my neighbor about 3 years ago. I divided it and put part in the sunny part of the garden and part in the shade. It bloomed this year in the sun. The one in the shade has not. The leaves are strap like. The nasturtium are overgrowing it.
