Scenery: Dominica

This was taken during our cruise to the Caribbean last winter. We were touring Dominica and stopped for a photo of this stream. As the weather was hot and humid, the cool, rushing water and shade from the trees was very welcome.

Halloween: Guilmon (Digimon) Costume

I purchased 4 yards of Red Felt, 1 yard of black felt, 1 yard of white felt, and 1 yard of red felt as well as some foam. I also got some elastic (for the waist) and sat down to try to figure it out, without a pattern, and only a picture on a video game as instruction!

I found a pair of his pants that fit like I wanted the costume to fit and laid them out on the felt. I cut front and back. Sewed, had him try on, then added elastic at the waist.

Then I attempted the shirt. I cut front and back and sleeves individually. Then sewed the sleeves and played around with it (with much error) until I found out the best way to add the sleeves and complete the shirt.

Next I did the hands. I found some winter gloves and laid one on the felt. I cut a circular shape out of the felt and sewed it all (except the wrists). Then I turned them inside out and added a little stuffing. I inserted his gloves and sewed them inside the hand (so he just puts on the gloves and the hands stay on easily). For the nails I cut the shape out of grey felt, hot gluing them to the hand. I pinned them with straight pins while the glue dried.

Now came the time to tackle the head. Honestly, this was the one part I was most afraid of. I've never attempted anything like this before and i was seriously concerned on how I would take it on especially considering how much I know my son hates masks on his face!

I started with a baseball cap. I adjusted it to fit his head. I glued some foam to the bill (shaped like the bill, but a bit longer). I glued on the appropriate felt for this to be the top part of the mouth. Then I cut felt for the hat to build it up some. I then cut foam to match the top part of the mouth, and for the bottom part of the mouth. Then I glued the appropriate fabric on it, to make it look like the bottom of the mouth. For the top of the head I draped the fabric over the top of the hat, hot gluing it periodically. I added hot glue to the bottom part of the mouth and to the top, then added clamps to hold it tight while it dried. I also glued some foam inside the hat and added an elastic band, so that it would pick the hat up off my son's head so he could see more easily.

Then I added all the accents (black diamonds and such) that are on Guilmon's body.

Howlie and Lilly (Bassett Hounds)

This is Howlie and her sister, Lilly. They are 22 months old Basset Hounds. I received Howlie in December of 2007 at six weeks old. I received Lilly when she was 6 months old in June of 2008. I got both of them from my son. He has the Mama and Daddy and their other sister.

They both love to go camping and hiking on the trails to sniff out other animals and see the deer roaming around. They are so lovable and the best companion a person could have. The picture I'm sending was taken in August on a hiking trail while camping.

Alex (American Shorthair/Splotched Tabby Mix)

Alex is 1 year old and an American ShortHair/Splotched Tabby Mix. Copper (our dog) was barking in the new barn. My brother when in to find out what it was. My mom went in as my brother went behind the bales, and low and behold, a kitten walked out! He was wild and was hissing and spitting along with still being too young to leave his mother so we put him back.

About two months later, Copper and my brother (again) were playing. My brother threw the ball into the long grass and Copper came out with the kitten in his mouth! Copper would never hurt a kitty and he was fine. Alex was taken in and fed. He became an official member of the family after a trip to the vet to be neutered. He is now my baby!

He likes play with pom-poms, attack Kitten, play with Copper, attack feet/hands, etc. . . kitten stuff. He's my little love.

Buttermilk for Septic System

For those of you on septic tanks; I had to have my tank pumped out last year. The guy who did the work, told me that instead of buying the expensive bacteria products, to pour a half gallon of buttermilk down the drain once a month and it would do the same thing!

Patching Chipped Enamel Around Tub Drain

There is chipped enamel around the drain in my tub. I have tried to cover it with enamel paint meant for that from the hardware store, but it's expensive and wears off.

This time I tried the white caulking that hubby had used around the tub, around the drain area (after we had come home from a weekend away, so the area was dry). It took a while to dry and cure (leave it a day or so), but it covered it up very nicely. And only cost pennies of extra caulk.

Use Kerosene to Clean Wrenches

For the home DIY mechanic: to clean the grease from your wrenches, use a rag dampened with kerosene. Not only will it remove all the grease and grime, but kerosene leaves a very light oil coating, even when wiped dry.

Gift Bags Instead of Wrapping Paper

We are all trying to do our bit to save the environment. Most of us have switched to the gift bags from wrapping paper. The bags can be used over and over, in fact in our family it's fun to go to a party and see a bag you bought being used again. But I have started to give gifts in the reusable grocery bags. Every store now offers the reusable bags for the same price as the ones from the dollar store. These bags can be used more than the other bags and no more plastic!

Remove Zippers Before Discarding Coats and Sleeping Bags

Before you through out an old coat or sleeping bag, remove the zippers. The last time I had to replace a coat zipper, the zipper was almost the price of a new coat.

Also consider recycling old sleeping bags into dog beds, or donate to an animal shelter. But, remove the zipper first and save in the event you need to replace one.

You can also recycle an old sleeping bag (again, zipper removed) into a duvet-use 2 sheets sewn like a giant pillow case to enclose it, then tack down in a nice pattern.

Removing Skunk Smell from House

Concerning the smell in your house after your dog gets sprayed with a skunk, we called the Erie police! We thought our dog had been sprayed by pepper spray! We thought someone had intruded our back yard and the intruder sprayed the dog! The smell smelled like burning chemicals so we knew no better! Now we do.

The non- emergency police patched us through to 911! Two squad cars showed up. They scoped our house at 1am in the morning only to sadly tell us they were pretty sure our dog was sprayed by a skunk! We were so upset, but the police were very helpful. They suggested we use Murphy's Oil soap on the dog! It worked except for her nose area.

As far as the house. We did the candles, coffee grounds, incense, and the baking soda on the carpet which all seemed to help. It's now 2:50 am and we are finally breathing a little easier. I have to get up at 5 for work so I better say good night! Thanks to all for all the wonderful suggestions! I love this site.

Alternate Direction When Stacking Clothes

When you stack any type of clothing in drawers, alternate the direction. For example, when folding tee shirts, place one in normal position but top it with another folded tee shirt that is turned around. In other words, that top of the tee shirt should be at the bottom. Now place the next tee shirt in the normal position. Alternate this and it will take up less space in the drawer.

Another idea, using the above method, instead of stacking clothing is to place them upright. For example, tee shirts. I fold them small enough so they fit in the drawers upright. They are easier to see plus they take up less space.

I don't fold socks in "twos" but stack them together, using the above method. I grab two when I need them. This only works well when you using the same style and type of sock.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

Someone in our neighborhood put a huge sofa out by the curb for trash collection. Since it was in good shape, many motorists slowed down for a look. But when they saw how enormous it was, they'd leave.

Eventually a compact car pulled up, and two men got out. "This I've got to see," I thought. They removed the cushions, turned the sofa upside down, and shook it hard. Then they picked up all the coins that tumbled out and drove off.

Disposing of Kitchen Scraps Other Than Composting

I have been putting my kitchen scraps in an empty coffee container so they do not smell sitting in the trash can. But I feel guilty about sending these cans to the landfill and not recycling them.

Does anyone have a better way to dispose of food scraps? I don't have a garden so composting is not an option. I would appreciate any help from our wise and wonderful ThriftyFun readers. Thank you.

Safe Flea Treatment for Cat with Kittens

My cat had got out while I was moving. I finally found her. She had kittens a week ago and I also discovered she had fleas. I've tried Dawn dish soap it seems to work on the babies, but not mom. What is This Song?

My sister is 10 years older than I am, and when I was little she would sometimes sing me to sleep. She used to sing songs like One Tin Soldier, Puff the Magic Dragon (it was the early 70s after all) but one that has stuck in my mind is about a little boy in a shoe (I think).

All I really remember is that I used to love the song and one small line, "One sailor boy reached for his toy...". I keep thinking it may have been about Winkin' Blinkin' and Nodd, but I could be wrong. I'd love to find the title of the song and maybe even the lyrics. Thanks to all!

Smoke Odors in My Apartment from Neighbors

I live in a apartment and the people across from me stand outside on the balcony and smoke. Sometimes 3-5 people at one time. The smell comes in around my door. How can I keep the smell out of my apartment and from around the outside of my door?

I threw away a carpeted rug that was outside my door, because of the smell and cigarette butts I found on it. They threw the butts down on the balcony, stairs and downstairs onto the sidewalk and grass.

Is there anything I can get to place outside my door that will absorb the cigarette smoke? The door seems to have good weather stripping, but my door smells of cigarette smoke. I haven't turned in a complaint to management yet.
